RIFLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1922.
Application filed June 22,1920. Serial No.-390,969.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICOLAS PInrnR, a subject of the King of Belgium, and resident of Liege, in the Kingdom of Belgium, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rifles, of which the following is a clear and exact description.
The subject matter of this present invention is a system of locking for bolt-action rifles and other firearms of a similar kind. According to this system, the working of the bolt and consequently the cooking of the striker is effected by means of a slide fitted and guided under the stock or barrel to which it is locked directly or indirectly.
This system of locking the bolt or breech closure in firearms of this kind allows of adapting the locking part proper to the bore of the rifle, that is to say, to the size of the cartridges to be fired.
The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, two different applications of this system Figure 1 is a partial longitudinal section of a rifle intended to fire small cartridges.
Figure 2 is a view of the latter from below, presuming the stock to have been removed. I
Figure 3 is a similar section to that of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is an external view of the latter.
The rifle represented in Figures 1 and 2 consists of a breech-box 1, in which travels longitudinally the bolt 2, and which carries in front the barrel 3. The bolt 2 is fitted in the known manner, with the striker which engages with the gear or trigger and with the percussion spring.
The bolt 2 is. connected by a rod 6 with a slide 4 guided under the barrel 3. The rod 6 which is attached by screws to slide 4, moves externally along box 1 and is fixed to bolt 2 by screw 7 engaging in a longitudinal slot 8 arranged in the breech-box 1. When the slide 4 is drawn backwards, the bolt 2 recedes together with its striker; the latter is then seized by the sear or trigger in such a manner that, when the slide 4 is subsequently brought forward again, the
spring of the striker is put under tension which produces the cooking of the weapon.
The slide 4 is held in its advanced position, notwithstanding the compression of the percussion spring, by a suitable stop, which constitutes the locking part of the bolt or breech-closure.
its closed position, the rod 6 screwed to slide 4 can be locked to the lugs 11 by a pin 12 which, when the rifle is closed, engages with corresponding holes arranged in the lugs 11 and rod 6. The disengagement of pm 12 is effected by means of a spring push l3 guided in the two lugs 11 which terminates on the outside on one of the lateral faces of slide 4. The latter is provided, for the passage of the push 13, with a longitudinal cut-out portion 14, which allows the slide to move backwards and forwards.
The whole of the mechanism is fixed to the stock 15 of the weapon by a screw 16, which passes through a cut-out portion 17 of rod 6 (Figure 2). In the Figures 3 and 4, the locking part is arranged in the stock 15 of the rifle. The rod 6 is then simply fixed to slide 4; it is guided by screw 16 which traverses a longitudinal slot made in the rod. Lugs 11, between which travels the rod 6 are covered by the stock 15 of the weapon, through which passes the spring push l3 controlling the pin 12, which has entered, when the rifle is closed, the holes in lugs 11 and rod 6.
I claim:
1. In a rifle, in combination, a barrel, a bolt, a grip member slidably mounted on the barrel and connected to the bolt and means for locking the sliding grip when the bolt is in firing position comprising a laterally movable plunger adapted to extend into aligned apertures in the grip member and barrel and to be manually disengaged from one of said apertures, and a spring normally tending to move said plunger into locking position.
2. In a rifle, in combination, a bolt, a barrel having a longitudinal flange provided with a transverse aperture, a grip member connected to the bolt and slidably mounted on the barrel, said grip member having a transverse aperture adapted to register with the transverse aperture of the barrel when the bolt is in firing position, a manually movable plunger adapted to extend into said registering apertures, and a spring normally tending to move said plunger into locking position.
3. In a rifle, in combination, a stock, a
bolt, a barrel, a grip member slidably mounted on the barrel and connected toithe bolt, said barrel and grip members having apertures therein adaptedto register when the bolt is in firing position, and meansfor grip when szud bolt is 1n 7 locking the sliding firing position. comprising a slidable, plunger mounted inthe stock and adapted to extend into said apertures, and .a springnormally tending to move said plunger to locking position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
