Be it known that I, W'ILLMM CLiN'ron SPEER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quinault, in the count-y of Grays Harbor and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Straight-Pull Bolt-Action Rifle, of u-'hich the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a rifle and has for its principal object to provide a straight pull bolt action, whereby thev cartridges from the magazine may be ejected and injected in relation to the firing chamber more quickly and easily than is possible with the rifles now in common use.
Another important object of the invention is to provide an improved locking mechanism for the rifle which will greatly enhance the safety thereof.
A still further important object of the invention is to generally improve upon rifles by providing an exceedingly simple construction, one which may be manufactured at a relatively low cost and yet will be strong, durable, efficient and reliable in operation, not likely to easily become out of order, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
lith the above and numerous other objects in view as .will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawing in detail, it will loe-.seen that 5 designates the stock of the rifle'which may be of suitable design and 'provided with the recess 6 for receiving Serial No. 45,041.
the magazine 7 having the follower 8 therein normally pushed upwardly by follower springs 9. As is shown particularly in Fig. 5, this magazine has an opening 10 at its top wall and one of the side walls is curved inwart ly at the opening as is indicated at 11 so as to properly guide the cartridges which are disposed in staggered relation in the magazine, the bottom 1 there of being engaged with a cleat 12 on the fol lower. The receiver is indicated generally by the letter A and includes the front and rearbridges 18 and 14 respectively con nected by top walls 15.
A bolt 16 is slidable in the receiver for the purpose of holding a cartridge in the firing chamber of the barrelvl. This bolt is slidable for the ejection of a cartridge in the firing chamber and for receiving a cartridge from the magazine and placing y the same in the firing chamber. Y
A sleeve 18 is detachably engaged with the rear or stock end of the bolt lo rhis engagement is accomplished by providing the rear end of the holt with an annular groove 19 engageable by the inner ends 2O of pivoted dogs 21 mounted in the barrel 1S and having their rear or outer ends projecting outwardly therefrom as is indicated to advantage in Fig. 4 so that by pressing these outer ends inwardly, the ends Q0 may be disengaged from the annular groove 19 and thus the bolt 16 may be disassembled from the sleeve 18. langs 25E are mount-ed on the bolt 1G for increment in the slots 24%, shown to advantage in Fig. 7, in the ro.- ceiver bridges lut so that in order to slide the bolt it must iirst be rotated. An ejector ring 25 is disposed in a suitable groove provided about the bolt 1li and mounts the ejector il@ longitudinally of said bolt.
As stated above, the principal object of the invention to provide a straight pull bolt, that is, to provide a bolt wherein a straight pull first rotates the bolt to prop erly register the lugs 2B with the longitudinally extending portions of the bayonet slots 24: and to then pull the bolt for ejecting the cartridge in the tiring chamber and allowing another cartridge to move upwardly from the magazine in order that when the bolt is pushed back said latter mentioned cartridge will be pushed into the firing chamber. This straight pull is accomplished by providing an annular head 28 on the stock end of the bolt 1G and providing the same With cogs 29 for engagement With cogs-30 on a lever 31 pivoted as at 32 on the sleeve 18.
By referring particularly to Figs. 2 and 6 it Will be seen that When theV lever 21 is pulled toward the butt of the stock 5., the. bolt will first be rotated until the lugs 23 reach the ends of the arcuate circumferenT tial portions of the slots 24 and then Will'be pulled toward the butt, said lugs 23 mov.- ing through the straight longitudinal portions of the slots 241., thereby causing the ejectment of the cartridge which may be disposed in the lfiring chamber of the barrel 17 and allowing another Cartridge from the magazine 7 to, be .disposed in .front .of .the bolt So that when. the bolt is pushed back again, said latter mentioned cartridge vvill be pushed into the frineohamber of the barrel.

The stoel; 5 is pro-y vided with the longitudinally extending groove 35 which forms a longitudinal branch of the lower bayOHet slot 2.4L in the bridge 14 so that one of the lugs 23 will move therein when the bolt is being in and out of the receiver.
The numeral 36 represents the cooking piece having a notch 37 at its top a shoulder 38 at its bottom. A shaft 39 is rotatable through the sleeve 1.8 and has .a crank portion 40 intermedia-.te its ends for engagement With the notch 37 to hold the cooking piece in a cocked position so that it cannot be released by the trigger mechanism Which Will be described later. On the shaft there is provided a cam 41 .engageable in the fork 4,2 of a lever 41-3 pivoted inter'- mediate its .end as at 44 and provided with an extension l5 which Will be .disposed in the path of movement of the arm when the crank t() is engaged With thevnvotch 37, thereby preventing the Withdrawal of Athe bolt. The shaft 39 is rotatableby a crank 46 to one side of the sleeve 1S.
