UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM URONE, OF GALVE'STON, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-BALE TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,494, dated August 5, 1873 application filed May 24, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM CIIoNE, of Galveston, in the county of Galveston and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Cotton-Ba-le Tie, of which the following is a specication:
My invention consists of a small S-shaped bar for tying the bands and cross-ribs on the bands, both lower and upper sides, at short distances apart near the ends, which are fastened together, which is effected by inserting the band in the notches of the aforesaid bar, one part at one side and one part at the other side, in a very simple manner, which any common or inexperienced hand can readily understand and accomplish, and which can be done Without any unnecessary slackness of the band, as with other ties, so that the bale can be tied as small as it is -made by the press, which it cannot be when tied by the ordinary fastening.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved bale-tie. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on the line x, Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of my improved tie, showing a modification in the form, and Fig.
5 is a plan view of Fig. 4.
A is a small bar, about an inch wide, and, say, three inchesy long, more or less, bent reversely at a b, so that the end portions B range with the middle portion so as to form twice the width of said parts B, Vwhich arek next to the opposite edges of A, which increases the length and lessens the thickness of the tie, so as vto make it more desirable; and in this case I have provided said parts B with a projection, behind which the cleats E are secured rmly against slipping out.
The essential advantages 0I' this tie are, that very little if any loss of compactness in the bale is sustained in applying it, and it can be applied by the most inexperienced hands.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The S-shaped bar A B B, and the crossbars E, combined with the band D in the manner and for the purpose described.
WILLIAM ORONE.
