IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-BALE TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,575, dated July 8, 1873,' application led June 7, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUEUs W. COBB, of Helena, county of Shelby and State of Alabama, have invented certain Improvements in rlies for Cotton-Baies. The following description, taken in connection with the accompanying plate of drawings hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification, wherein are set forth the natureand principles of the invention, by which the same may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts thereof as are claimed as new and are desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States.
My invention relates to that class of ties which arev made use of for fastening the metallic bands employed in baling cotton, and foriother analogous uses; and the nature thereof consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, hereinafter shown and described, whereby the ends of the bale-bands are locked by devices which may be quickly adjusted and readily removed.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates my invention and forms a part of the specification thereof, corresponding parts be ing designated by similar letters- Figure l is a view of the outer side of the hoop or band with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view of the inner side of the hoop or band, showing the position of the buckle and keeper when the ends of the hoop are locked together. Fig. 3 represents the edges of the hoop and illustrates the relative arrangement of my improvements. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the metallic plate or keeper. Fig. 5 is a modification of the metallic plate.
Referring to the drawing, one of the ends A of the hoop or band is provided with a series of elongated apertures, a., the distance between which is exactly equal, for the rec'eption of the tongue of the buckle B, which is of the ordinary form, consisting of a rim and a movable tongue or catch. The end c of the hoop is also provided with an aperture or apertures through which the tongue of the buckle passes. The ends of the hoop are passed through the rim of the buckle and pierced by the tongue thereof in such a manner that when the ends of the band are drawn from each other by the outward pressure of when the said ends are forced toward each other the buckle becomes loosened, and may be adjusted or attached at pleasure for the purpose of lengthening or shortening the band. rIhe keeper, or clamping-plate D, consists of a piece of metal provided with an elongated rectangular aperture, d, through which passes the ends of the hoop.
The said plate may be made to slide with facility and occupy any desired position upon the hoop.
The outward pressure ot' the bale against the rim of the plate causes it to assume au angular position, and clamp or press the outer to the inner end of the hoop.
The said plates may be made from waste ends of the hoop-metal, and the cheapness ot' their manufacture thereby greatly enhanced.
By the construction and arrangement herein described of the various parts of the tie, it is obvious that the draft upon the connected ends will be direct, and that the said ends will not become bent or indented, but will at all times preserve a position parallel with each other.
The plate illustrated in Fig. 5 is provided with a slot or opening, m, by means of which it may be slipped with facility over the edges of the hoop, it' it should be deemed desirable so to adjust it.
The apertures a are cut by proper machinery in such a manner that the distance between them is exactly the same in all of the bands used upon the bale, thereby enabling the operator to adjust the said bands with great accuracy and in such a manner that they shall be exactly of the same capacity and the pressure upon the hoops equally distributed.
Having thus described the construction and operation of my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A cottonbale tie, consisting of the buckle and the slotted plate or keeper, combined with the hoop, as and for the purposes described.
