Be it known that l, JACOB GRIMM, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and a resident of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gaslighters, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in gas-lighters of the type, in which sparks are-produced by causing an abrading surface to act upon ceric metal or other sui"- able pyrophoric material.
One of the objects of the invention is to so construct the handle of the implement that it permits of a convenient mounting thereon, without the aid of special fastening means, of a body, either in the form of a conta-iner or support, suited for holding a supply of pyrophoric pencils for renewals. Another object of the invention is to so design the abrading surface, that the contact between the saine and the pyrophoric material is, in each stroke of the latter, of very short duration, and consequently the wear so light, that a small block of pyrophoric material is serviceable for a considerably longer time than in the constructions heretofore in use.
A further object of the invention is to improve generally the mechanism which supports the abrading surface in position upon the handle of the implement.
A still further object of the'invention is to provide an article of manufacture, which is simple in construction, etiicient in operation, durable in use, and which is capable of manufacture on a commercial scale, or in other words one which is not so difiicult to produce as to be beyond the reasonable cost of such a contrivance.
lVit-h these and other objects in view, which will more fully appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the combination, arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that many changes may be made in the size and proportion of the several parts and details of construction within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantagesy of the invention.
,3l few. of the many possible embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a gaslighter constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof; Fig. l is a rearelevation of a portion of the implement; Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 5--5 of Fig. 1, on a larger scale; F ig. is a section similar to the one shown in Fig. 5 of a modification of the invention; and Fig. 7 is a similar section of a further modification of the invention.
Referring now first to Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, of the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates the handle of the implement, made in the case illustrated in the drawings of wire and including two substantialljT parallel shank members 11 yand 12, which are resiliently united by a spring coil 13, comprising about one and three quarters of a convolution. lith the free end of the shank 12 is, preferably, made integral a substantially U-shaped support 141, extending in a plane at right-angles to the longitudinal axis of the shank12. The transversely extending base 15 of the U-shaped support is notched at 16, 16 as close as possible to the legs 17 and 18 thereof. The support is thus rendered somewhat resilient, thereby permitting of a convenient mountingthereon of and insuring a proper grip on an oblongV strip 19, that is provided with notches 20 at its ends. ln these notches are seated the legs of the U-shaped support, the strip abutting against the base of said support. This strip is, preferably, made of steel and is provided with a roughened abrading surface 21, that extends from the leg 17 toward the leg 18, it covering only part of the front face of said strip, for instance one-half thereof. The purpose of this arrangement will be described hereinafter. The free end of the shank 11 of the handle is bent at right angles to the longitudinal axis thereof, and has attached to it, in any suitable manner, a short cylinder or pencil 22 of pyrophoric material, the exposed end of the pencil being held in frictional contact with the abrading surface. ends ot which project beyond the disks, the three elements being united, for instance, by an eyelet 27, which serves at the same time to hold against the outer tace of one of the disks 25 a somewhat resilient disk 28, having radial slots 29. The width ot each slot corresponds substantially to the outer diameter oi a tube section 23, but is less than the diameter oit the flange thereof. The ends of the strip 26 are held between the two abutting convoiutions of the spring coil, the magazine being inserted into the spring coil by, first, extending the strip in parallel re lation to the longitudinal axis of the handle, and inserting one ot the ends of the strip 26 between the two convolutions, and then turning the magazine approximately ninety degrees into the position shown in Fig. l of the drawings, in which both ends of the strip are disposed between the convolutions ot' the spring, whereby the magazine is held firmly in position.
instead of the magazine described, there may be held within the spring coil a container 30, as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings. This container comprises a body 8l and a cover 32, the cylindrical wall 88 of the body being at diametrically opposite portions bent outwards in parallel relation to the bottom 34E thereof. The outwardly bent portions 35, so obtained, are held between the convolutions of the spring coil. The container servesto hold a. supply of pyrophoric pencils for renewals.
The modication shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings diigers from the one shown in Fig. 6 in that the body portion of the container is fixed to a strip 36, the ends of which project beyond the body of container and may be inserted between the convolutions of the spring coil.
The operation of the devices herein described differs from those heretofore in use mainly in that the pyrophoric material is subjected to the action of the abrading surtace only through part of the stroke of the shank ll oit the handle. The normal stroke of this shank extends from leg to leg of the U-shaped support le, while the abrading surface extendsvonly through part of that distance. The pyrophoric material lasts thus considerably longer than in the devices heretofore in use, in which the abrading surface extends throughout the length of the normal stroke of the pencil carrier.
Whenever a pyrophoric pencil is used up, its tube section 23 is removed from the. apparatus, and replaced by a tube section and pencil thereon from the magazine shown in Figs. l and 5, or from the containers disclosed by Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings.

A pyrophoric igniting device, including a wire handle having two parallel Shanks united by a spring coil of approximately two convolutions, said convolutions abutting oneagainst the other, and a magazine within said coil provided with projections interposed between said convolutions.
2. In a pyrophoric igniting device according to claim l, said magazine being inthe form of a container having a detachable cover.
