RETAINING CLIP.

My present invention relates to improvements 1n retaining clips for use in comb1nation with pens, pencils and similar articles, for the purpose of holding the art cle 111 the pocket in manner well known with regard to fountain pens. The primary obect of my invention is to improve the well known type of resilient retaining clip by enhancin the frictional engagement of the clip with the wall of the pocket, or other flexible support, upon which the clip and article to which it is attached, are supported. For convenience of illustration I have shown the retaining clip in connection with the removable cap of a fountain pen of standard type, and in the drawin s I have shown several modifications of t e improved device The invention consists in certain novel combinations and arangements of parts between the cap and the clip as will be hereinafter described. In the drawings I have illustrated several complete examples of-the physical embodiment of my invention wherein the parts are combined and arranged according to my invention.

Figure 4 is a view showing a modified form of cap adaptin it to use with the clip, and Figure 5 is a urther modification of the cap adapting it for use with the clip.

In the conventional form of fountain pen illustrated in Figure 1 the barrel or body of the pen is designated as 1 and the removable cap for the pen is designated 2.

In Figures 2 and 3 the cap is provided. with a rivet 3 extending transversely through its wall, and the rivet is fashioned with an exterior head 4 projecting from the outer surface of the cap 2.

The clamping or retaining clip comprises an arm 5 of resilient or spring metal fashioned at its free end with a head 6 and in the head 6 is formed an elongated opening or slot 7 adapted for co-action with the rivet head 4 in retaining the fabric of a pocket wall W (or other flexible material) between 1927. The cli is anchored or fixe d at one end, as 8, to t e material of the cap 5, the end being embedded or seated in the material of the cap when the latter is molded or otherwise fashioned. In some instances a metal- 11c retaining ring 9 may be fixed within the upper end of the cap for anchoring the fixed end of the resilient or spring arm of the clip.

It will be apparent that when the fountain pen 1 w1th its cap in place is inserted in the pocket, the arm 5 is slipped over the edge of the pocket wall W and slides down the exterior face, of the pocket wall. The pro ect1ng head 4 which is aligned with the slotted head 6, due to the resiliency of spring action of the arm 5 causes the material at M Figure 3 to be projected through the slot 7 of the head, and this enchanced frictional contact between the rivet head, material M and slotted head 6 of course holds the pocket in a firm clasp to prevent loss or displacement of the fountain en.

In Figure 4 t e cap 10 is provided with an integral, exterior head 11 projecting from its exterior face for co-action with the slot 7 in the head 6 of the resilient arm, and in Figure 5 the same effect is attained by pro viding the cap 12 with an exterior socket or depression 13 in its exterior face. The spring arm 14 of the clip is fashioned with a ball or head 15, which, due to the resiliency of the metal of the arm forces the pocket wall into the socket 13 for retaining the fountain pen in place. In Figure 4, the material of the pocket wall is held over the head 11 by the slotted head 6 in the same manner as that shown' in Figure 3.

In all cases it will be apparent that the material of the pocket wall, or other suitable support, is firmly clasped between the re silient arm of the clip and the complementary member of the cap, to prevent displacement of the fountain pen or other article with which the clip is used.
