To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I. Ina M. HART, citizen of the United States, residing at Sharptown in the county of Franklin and State of' have invented new and useful lmin Pencil-Holders, ofwhich. the

following is a specification.

The invention relates to pencils and more particularly to the class of combined pencils Indian a, p rovements and holders therefor.

vide a pencil of this character which is extremely simple in const-ruction, nexpens sive in manufacture, so that a pencil with the holder can be sold at a small cost, the holder being of a. construction and so mountedon the pencil as not to interfere with the free use thereof.

With these and other objects in View the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described illus-v trated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

In the drawings :-Figure 1 is an elevation of a pencil showing the attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the attachment applied to the pencil. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on a line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4. is a fragmentary, vertical longitudinal sectional View through the pencil and holder. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary Vertical sectional view through the pencil and holder. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary side elevation of the pencil shown in Fig.1 with the ferrule removed and partly broken away.

Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, l0 designates a pencil which is of the ordinary well-l nown construction having the usual sharpened. end 11, while the opposite end is provided with on which is fixedly fitted a ferrule or sleeve 13, the same being provided with an eraser a reduced portion 12,-

Formed in the reduced end portion 12 of the pencil 10 is a notch 15, the same being intersected at opposite ends by side grooves 16,. formed in the reduced portion 12 at diainctrical opposite points thereof, and in these grooves are. received portions of the side limbs 17 of a substantially U-shaped resilient holder 18, which is formed from a single strand of spring wire, the closed end of the holder 18 being slightly out turned to form a finger engaging tip 20, while the limbs 17 are outwardly bowed at 20 to accommodate varying thicknesses of fabric material between the pencil 10 and the said holder when the pencil has been inserted in the pocket of a garment.

The limbs 17 of the holder are provided with inturned ends 21, which engage in the notch 15, and this holder is. secured to'the reduced portion '12 of the pencil 10 by means of the sleeve 13, which is tclescoped upon the said reduced portion 12 of the pencil. The ferrule or sleeve 13 at its inner end is int-urned at 12 to bite into the pencil so as to permanently mount the holder thereon.

The pencil is inserted in the pocket in a garment in the usual manner and the holder grips the free edge of the said p'ochet clamping it between the holder and the pencil, thereby sustaining the pencil fast within the pocket, but providing its ready removal therefrom. 7 I

It is clearly obvious that the holder is permanently mounted upon the end of the pencil 23 so as to fornra part thereof and the mounting of the said holder will not interfere with the free use of the pencil, should it be desired the holder may be brought into engagement with a belt of a garment for holding the pencil upon the person when not in use without possibility of losing the same. I

From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will be clear, and, thcrefore, 'a more extended explanation of the same has been omitted.
