To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEONARD LEE lnmmnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hayti, in the county of Pemiscot and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in pencil holders, and one of the principal.

objects thereof is to provide a pencil holder which will allow the pencil to be used up almost entirely, even though the pencil is too short to be comfortably held in the hand.

A further object of the invention is to pro vide an im roved pencil holder which will be extreme y simple, durable, efficient in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.

With these and other objects in view, which will become apparent as the descrip tion proceeds, the invention resides in the construction combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the acco1npanying drawing in which like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures of which:

Figure 1 represents a side elevational view of a pencil holder constructed according to my invention, showing the same positioned on a new pencil.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, the holder includes a tube 1 made of brass or other suitable metal, having its upper and

lower ends

2 and 3 respectively slightly tapered. These ends are bifurcated, each having V-shaped slots 4- cut in the metal, at diametrically opposed points, the inner ends of these slots terminating in round openings 5, whereby to prevent splitting of the tube, and whereby to assist in rendering the tongues or jaws formed by the bifurcations resilient.

The upper end of the holder is circimiferentially channeled as at 6 for the purpose of strengthening the upper jaws, and for the purpose of receiving the flanges 7, ordinarily formed on the eraser holders of pencils. This channel occurs intermediate the ends of the upper jaws as will be noted.

One of the upper jaws is extended and pointed downwardly and inwardly to form a clip 8 whereby the pencil holder may be retained in the pocket of the user against accidental displacement.

In operation, when the holder is used with a new or long pencil, the pencil is in serted in the holder from the upper end toward the lower end. Until the pencil is worn down, the holder will simply serve as a means of preventing the pencil from loss from the users pocket. However, when the pencil is worn so that it becomes of a length substantially equal to that of the holder or shorter, the top of the pencil, including the eraser holder, may be cut oil with a pocket knife and pushed in between the upper jaws of the holder, until the flanges 7 engage in the channel 6. The lower or pointed end of the pencil, may then be inserted in the lower end of the holder. As the pencil is used from time to time it may be drawn out and sharpened.

By the use of the holder I have provided, pencils may be used up almost entirely. Even though the pencil is only a couple of inches or less in length it may still be used. The holder will not only retain the short piece firmly but will permit writing with ease. Not only will it serve in this manner to economize in the use of pencils, but it will be found as before mentioned, of great use in preventing the loss of pencils from the pockets of the users, and also of use in protecting the pencil point when not in use by slipping the holder down over the point.

Although I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I may desire to make such changes: in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts thereoflas do not depart from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.

I claim 1. A pencil holder comprising a tubular body having its upper and lower ends bifurcated and tapered whereby to provide resilient jaws for receiving respectively the eraser end and the pointed end of the pencil, one of said upper jaws being extended and bent downwardly and inwardly against the body to provide a clip, substantially as described.
