1 This invention relates to an article such as a desk set and means for connecting an article or articles thereto, the particular desk setillustrated herein including abody having means for mounting a memo pad and/or a pen holder thereon. a

It is an object of the invention to provide a ,desk set whichcan be conveniently built in a unit wherein most of the structure is in one piece and wherein an element or elements are con- .nected thereto by means of spring clip structure, which is relatively simple but effectively holds or connects the article on the body.

A further object of the invention is to provide an improved memo pad spring clip construction.

Another object of the invention is to provide an improved pen holder which is pivotally connected to the body of the device and can be conveniently collapsed, particularly when the desk set is packed for shipment.

The above and other objects and advantages of the invention will more fully appear from the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like reference characters refer to the same parts throughout the views, and, in which:

There is illustrated a body [0 which preferably is moulded from a suitable plastic. Formed in the body is a recess I l which is adapted to receive a stack of memo sheets l2. The body ID has a front wall [3 with a notched or cutaway portion I4 which exposes parts of the edges of the stack of memo sheets [2 to facilitate their successive removal.

Extending across the rear of the recess H is a vertical slot 15, one wall of which is provided with a projection IS. A spring clip I! is provided to anchor the memo paper I2 in the recess II. This clip includes a generally horizontal portion I8, which is adapted to lie upon the stack of paper l2 at the upper end thereof. The clip has a pair of spaced bent prongs [9 which assist in firmly engaging and holding the stackof paper I2.

The spring clip I! also includes an angularly bent anchoring portion 20 .whichis received in the slot [5. The clip anchoring portion 20 is provided with an aperture 2|, which is of such size that the projectionfllfi on one side wall of the slot l5 will fit into the aperture. The lower portion of the aperture 2| is defined by a tongue 22, which is bent inwardly at a slight angle to the remainder of the clip portion 20 and is adapted to lie in contact with the projection or abutment It. The tongue 22 accordingly is offset relative to the anchoring portion 20, as best shown in Figs. 3 and 4 and may be referred to as an offset member.

It should be noted as in Fig. 3 that when the spring clip I! is in position and bearing against a pad of paper, the angularly disposed portion 20 of the clip has spaced portions engaging opposite side walls of the slot 15. As a result, the clip, through its inherent resiliency, is capable of exerting considerable pressure on the stack of paper l2.

Located in the upper face of the body I0 is a channel or groove 23. This channel communicates with a slot or recess 24 which extends through the body vertically. Opposite side walls of the recess 24 are provided with stepped abutments 25. Fitted into the slot 24 is a pen'holder 26, which is approximately square in cross section and provided with a pen receiving socket 21. The pen holder 26 has dimples or sockets 28 formed in opposite sides thereof and facing the side walls of the slot 24. Interposed between the dimpled or socketed side walls of the pen holder 26 and the side walls of the socket 24 are spring clips 29. Each of the clips is provided with a dome-like projection 30, which is received in the dimple 28 at each side of the pen holder. The clips 29 are also provided with outwardly struck portions 3i, which are adapted to lie in recess 32 formed in the side walls of the slot 24. The adjacent edges of the clips 29 bear against the stepped abutments 25 formed in said side walls of the recess 24.

As a result the pen holder 26 is firmly retained in the recess 24 and is capable of vertical swinging movement to a vertical position or an angular position such as shown in Fig. 1 or to a horizontal position wherein the pen holder is flush with the top of the body [0, as indicated in Fig. 2. In the position of Fig. 2 a pen holder 26 will lie conveniently in the channel or groove 23.

One end of the body [0 is curved and is provided with a pair of recessed portions 33 and 34 which serve as ash trays. They are separated by a vertical wall 35 having cigarette and cigar rests I 36 and 37 formed thereon. If desired, pencil grooves 38 may be provided in the face of the body beside the groove or channel 23 and the pen holder 26. Suitable cushioned feet 39 are also provided to preventthe article from scraping a highly polished surface.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a desk set of relatively simple construction and yet which conveniently and firmly holds articles incorporated therewith, such as the memo pad l2 and the pen holder 26. They are held in place by highly eificient spring clip means so that the structure is for all practical purposes a complete unit. 7

It will, of course, be understood that-various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the various parts without departing from the scope of my invention. a

What I claim is:

I 1. A memo pad holder comprising a body forming a flat pad supporting portion and having a slotiformed therein adjacent one end of said pad supporting portion, a projection formed on the wallet said slot adjacent said pad supporting portion in spaced relation below the top'of said slot and extending into said slot, a resilient sheet metal pad holding clip bent to form an overlying pad holding portion and an anchoring portion disposed at an acuteanglerelative to said pad holdin ortion, the bend engaging the upper portion of the side of said slot remote from said pad supporting portion with a fulcrum action to wardly exerted resilient pressure on the pad. hold- 7 ing portion of said clip.

2. The structure set forth in claim 1, and an angularly ofiset tongue element at the lower portion of said aperture for engagement against theunder side of said projection to insure positive locking contact therewith. V
