CONDUCTORS VEST;
neona e.
7 To all whom it may cancerm Be it known that-I, SAMUEL M. BLooH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Guyahoga, and State of @hio, have invented a new and useful I mprovement in Conductors Vests, of wh1ch the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as todistlnguish it from other inventions,
'The present invention, relating, as indicated, toconductors vests, is directed to a particular type of garment generally known by the above title, andsometimes called a vestlette, which may be worn by conductors under the coat to carry coins, tickets, report sheets, transfers and the like for the purpose of saving the coat or ordinary vest. The purpose of the present invention is the provision of an improved type of vestlette of greater convenience than those heretofore in use and of an improved and lesser:- pensive construction. To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means here1nafter fully described and particularly pointcd out in the claim.
The annexed drawing and -following deseription set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawingz- Fig. 1 is a front view of my improved vestlette; Fig. 2 is a partial rear view of the same; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section illustrating the construction of the material for the garment.
In Figs. 1 and 2. this garment will be seen to consist of a main body portion 1 equivalent in'its contour and size to the front parts of an ordinary vest, but unprovided with any opening or buttons down the front. This main portion is provided with two up wardly extending parts 2, to which are attached straps 3, adapted to be crossed behind the back of the wearer and fastened to the buttons which are attached at 4:. An adjustable belt or strap 5 is also provlded for attachment to the buttons 6 on the lower portion of the vest.
The use to which these garments are subjeet extremely severe, as the poekets Specification of Letters Patent. Patented lFeb. 21., Application filed August a, 1919. Seria11 1'o. 314,873. i i
with which they are provided are always more or less filled with heavy articles, such as small coins, so that the weight on the'fabric of the garment is very-considerable. In additlon to thls the pockets are used very wearing of the same along the edges, and (ll'lllclllty has been experienced 1n finding a material which will resist this extremely hard service and at the same time not be too-expensive for the purpose. I have overcome this diflioulty by the use of a combination of two fabrics which are shown in Fig. 3. The first of these fabrics is the lining 7 which is of a heavy canvas or similar material, upon which is superimposed a similarlyshaped strip of cloth 8 such as wool or serge. These two materials are then permanently and intricately united together all over their contacting surfaces by the use of rubber cement 9, and are in this way made into practically a single fabric, having the double advantage of great strength and of neat appearance on its outer side.
Laid across the outer or front side of the main portion or body of the vest are a plurality of strips of similarly formed material 10, 11 and 12. 0f these strips, the lowermost one 10 is out to conform to the bottom of the vest and is securely sewed thereto. It is also sewed along the seams 13, 14 and 15 to produce three pockets 16, 17 and 18 as indicated in Fig.- 1. The other two strips 11 and 12 are partially overlapping, the strip 12 being laid next to the body part and the strip 11 overlying the strip 12. They are then sewed together to the main part of the vest, to produce the pockets 19, 20, 21, 22 and 19, 20, '21 and 22. There are thus two sets of pockets formed by these overlapping strips, of which the pockets 19', etc., are somewhat deeper than the others. The strips 10, 11 and 12 are so disposed on the body part of the vest that a narrow transverse space is left between them and centrally in 'these spaces I provide two eyelets 23 and 24 be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and dis- V-shaped strip 26 conforming to the shape of the neck opening and applied to the edge of the time. A strip 27 is left ii the edge of the fabric about this opening and is turned in to cover the upper part of the V- strip 26, while the strip serves to protect and strengthen the edge of the opening.
The advantages of my improved vestlette are its, strength and the numerous pockets which are thus provided and which are so arranged as to allow for the attachment thereto of a coin-handling device.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention maybe employed instead of the one explained; change being made as regards the mechanlsm herem disclosed, pro
vided the means stated by the following claim or the equivalent or" such stated means tinctly claim as my invention? In agarment of the character described, the combination of a main body part of flexihle material, providing a V-s'haped neck ,opening at its upper'edg'e, a reinforcing strip of heavy material conforming to the shape of the neck opening and partially enclosed within the iiiate rial at the edge thereof, a
plurality of overlapping. strips attached at their side and lower edges to the face of the main body below the neck opening-and extending transversely across said body, an-
other transversely extending strip similarly attached, positioned adjacent the lower edge of the main body and having an upwardly curved upper edge spaced from the adjacent V I 7 straight edge o'fsaid overlapping strips, two
parallel rows'of stitching connecting all of said transversely extending strips to said main body and subdividing the same lnto side and central compartments and veyelets SAMU L" M. BLOOH. V
