JENS WEIYTANN, OE'
ROBE AND Laosei.
Application filecl January T0 aZZ '207mm tt' may 00710617771:
Be it known that Jmzs li-zm'nxnn, a subject of Christian X, King of Denmark. residing at fldense, Denmark, have inyented certain new and useful lmprovements in llobes and the like, of which the following` is a specification.
rllhis invention relates to agparel particularly to such outdoor' articles robes or other protective articles.
In snch an-article as a lap robe, to whiclL reference is made by way of illustration, it is of the greatest importance that warmth. be combined with lightness and fiexibility, that the effects of inclement weather be pro Vided for, that the article have a very considerable strength to withstand the rough usage which seems ineyitable and that moreV specifically the article be of a form providing for comfort and convenience.
As illustrative of my inyention and as charaoteristic of one of its preferred forms, I have il'lnstrated herein a lap rcpe combining the features set forth as desirable. rhroughont the specification and drawingjs like reference characters are employed to indicate co 'responding parts, and in the drawings Fig. I is a general view of an automobile robe.
Fig. II is an enlarged face of the pockets.
Fig. IH is a section through the of Fig. II, and
Fig. IV is a section through the robe at an edge thereof.
ln general form the robe Los View of one shown is of 1 general dimensions but is pro'vieed with a pair of patch pockets 2 located a snflicient comfort- .'stance' apart to provide for the able enyelopment of a pair of p so that a pocket will natnrally lie subst tially in the lap of each. passenger. pockets 2 are substantially independent of the robe 1 being' attached only at top and bottom leaving the sides nnattached. l-.Vithin the lateral opening's thus formed beneath the pocket l preferably zQ'atl'ier in a member 3 havingl a central opening for the a'dmission of the hand. This opening is preferably provided with an elastic and the men her 3 is snitably gathered to give freedom.
The space. between the pockets 2 and th face of the: robe 1 may be fnrther interlined if desired and thus forms with or without the lining a muf or al hand warmer which specification o;

at the same time assures the positioning` of the robe snugly against. the body of the passengers so that it can not slip down or become misplaced. The pair of pockets also make an easier means of apportioning the robe jnstly between two passengers and of ireventing the robe from becoming untncked on one side and overtucked on the other.
The structure of the main body of the robe 1 is of great importance. lt is highly desirable in a robe of this sort that it not only be wind proof but rain proof: lt is of course a well known fact that the skins of animals make one of the most satisfactory protections against wind and cold known to rcadily to the body. t is very warm, keep ing in the heat and keeping` out the cold and at the same time being sufficiently light so that it will not drag or weigh down on the users. Such Skins as sheep skins' so prepare'd take on moisture Very readily and when wet present all kinds of difficulties. In the first place, the very wetness of a skin renders it useless for warmth or comfort and at the same time the skin when wet is very easily distorted, stretched and sagged. This stretching and sagging is a fault that is apparent even with the dry skin but is Very much. agp'ravated and increased with any moisture which has been absorbed.
In order to oyercome this difliculty and at the same time gain the adyantages of this class of hide provide a soft tan Sheep skin inner lining 10 carried throughout the body of the rob On each side of this sheep skin lining' 10 provide a snrfacing layer 11 preferably of waterproof fabric. These external surfaces of fabrio not only protect the sheep skin against moisture but they take up wear and increase the attractiveness and appearance of the robe.
fnrthermore strengthen and protectmy robe by an inextensible binding of leather 12 of a Character which is not itself afi'ected by moisture, and which is stitche'd to the edges he nieinoe'ts are, hmyever, Sid stantially tree thi'fimghont and such stitchinfg or sub'diision ot the by stitching in certain e gght he desirable.
