J. A. MAKER ET AL SPORT ROBE Original Filed Aug. 12, 1936 ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 7, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SPORT ROBE John A. Maker and John F. Maker, Duluth, Minn.
1 Claim.
This invention relates to lap or comfort robes and has special reference to one particularly adapted for use as a sport lap robe when witnessing games such as hockey, football, or the like, during cold weather.
The principal object of the invention is to produce such a device convenient of access and one as free from drafts or discomforture when inuse as possible.
Another object is to provide convenience for manipulating the robe when about the body of one or more persons in that a combined pocket and supporting means is aflorded'for each occupant of the robe, which is especially desirable when wishing to stand up with the robe about the person, or when moving from side to side.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description thereof.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this application, and wherein like reference characters indicate like parts:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the robe as it might appear in use and partly open, but unoccupied. v
Figure 2 is a reducedrear' elevation.
Figure 3 is a reduced perspective view showin the device diagrammatically.
One embodiment of the invention as here illustrated contemplates the use of a comparatively heavy woolen blanket, preferably substantially twice as long as it is wide, and folded upon itself centrally, forming the lower marginal edge as at I'. As a matter of convenience insofar as the manipulation of the opening and closing means, hereinafter described, is concerned, the rear half of the blanket, designated at 2, may be slightly wider than the front portion of the blanket indicated at 3, forming overlapping marginal edges 4, which are brought around somewhat to the front of the blanket and-where ordinary slide fasteners are used as indicated at 5 for opening and closing the adjacent edges of the blanket as clearly illustrated. These slide fasteners extend only to a point somewhat remote from the lower edge I of the blanket, such points being indicated at 6, though it is to be understood that for economy in goods and if preferred these slide fasteners may be installed on the extreme marginal edges of the two portions of the blankets, as suggested. in Figure 2, however extending only to a point as indicated at 6, remote from the bottom edge, thus providing a sort of pocket as it were in the lower portion of the blanket for the feet of the users, and avoiding the necessity of one reaching to the extreme bottom in manipulating the slide fasteners.
The rear portion of the foot pocket is entirely covered, reinforced, and protected by a leather covering indicated at I to prevent wear, as well as to provide additional protection to the feet of the occupants.
A suitable distance from the upper marginal edge of the back portion of the blanket is fastened a quilted strip of the same material indicated at 8, or some other cushioning material may be provided, if preferred, it being only 10 stitched about the edges, or could be provided with snap fasteners to permit of its removal for cleansing purposes.
The front 3 of the robe is provided with triangularly shaped pocket members indicated at 9, 15 one upon either side of the front, they being stitched around their respective marginal edges to the inner surface of the front, and access to which, in each case, is provided by two diagonally disposed slits indicated at H] through which the 20 hands of the occupants may be thrust for not only comfort butholding up of the robe while the occupants thereof are standing or moving therein, and also for ordinary pocket purposes for toilet accessories or the like.
It is also to be understood that in lieu of the slide fasteners for opening or closing the blanket about the occupants, any suitable form of fastening means may be employed; the slide fasteners being herein illustrated as being a convenient 30 I means for the purpose, and also that other variations in structure may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
We have indicated at l l a snap button secured centrally of the tops of the front and back of the 35 blanket, so that when two persons are using the same the snap button may be used to hold the upper edges of the blanket snugly about them selves.
Having thus described our invention, what we 40 claim and desire 'to secure by Letters Patent, is:
As an article of manufacture a sports robe folded approximately at its mid-length, the side edges being connected from the fold upwardly approximately one-fourth their length, water-re- 45 sisting material covering that portion of the folded part intended to rest upon the ground, means for detachably fastening together the unsewed portions of the side edges, a water-resisting cushion attached to that portion of the robe intended to be sat upon, pockets in which to place the hands of the users and a detachable catch near the middle of the upper end to hold the front and rear portions of the robe snugly about the users. 55
