Description
H. M. HARTE.
PENCIL SHARPENER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 29, 1921.
I 1 I Patented. Jan- 3,
yy.-2. i
J 9 l X [hven/or M A Mar 115 STATES HERBERTMUY EAR'I'E, OF MANCHESTER, ENG
and Ireland, and resident of Manchester, in;
the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain Improvements in Pencil Sharpeners, (for which I have filed in Great Britain an application for Patent No. 11,282, dated 23rd April, 1920,)- of which thefollowin is a specification.
%"his invention relates to improvements 1n pencil Sharpeners, and has for an ob ect a pencil sharpener with removable blade, the said sharpener holding the blade 1n such a manner that the blade edges may be ad usted without removal of the blade to vary the position of the cutting edge in relation to the Pencils.
In carrying the invention into effect I provide a concave plate and a rCOIlVGX plate with means for securing a flat blade between them andmeans for pressing the whole together, so that the blade edge may, on-such pressure being applied to the curved plate,
project more or less accord-ing to the pressure, into a slit in a conical tube attached to or formed in one with one of the curved plates and which conical tube serves f or the reception and guidance of the pe nc1l and during theo eration of sharpening.
My invention will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which, v
Fig. 1. is a plan of my im roved devlce, Figs. 2 and 3 elevations rom opposite ends, I Fig. 4. longitudinal section and Fig. 5. plan of top plate. In accordance with my present inventlon I provide one of the plates a with a concave" surface 6- and the other plate 0 witha conmetal or stampings and are quite inde end vex surface at so that when the razor blade e is placed between them and the plates tight-,
ened up the blade is bent more or less to the edge for the time being gives an efiicient cutting action on the penci besides enabling the keenness of the cut to be altered as desired. The plates at and 0 may be madeof sheet metal or they may be made of cast ent from each otheras shown in the rawing, the two plates being secured together with the blade between them by means of a Specification of Letters Patent.

clamping bolt, screw or the like f and nut g I to either of the plates so that the holes 11 in the razor blade can be passed over them. the plates may be formed with fillets or recesses Z near the ends to hold the blade in the correct position laterally. The adjusting screw or bolt f determines the extent the cutting edge of the blade shall project into the slot 7' formed in the conical tubular member In into which the pencilis placed and turned duringsharpening. The conical tubular member is is formed in one With one of the plates. The fillets or recesses previously mentioned ma be used by themselves or in conjunction with the studs.
What I claim as m invention and desire to secure by Letters atent:
1. A pencil sharpening device,.comprising a safety razor blade provided with holes, a pair of plates one formed convex and one formed concave between which the cutting other plate, a nut for adjusting the curvature of the blade to vary the keenness of the cut, and a slitted conical tube carried by one of the platesto guide the pencil during the sharpening operation.
2. A pencil sharpening"device, comprising air of plates one formed convex and one. ormed concave between which the cutting blade is located, fillets or recesses in bne of the plates to holdthe blade in correct lateral position, a central screw carried b one of the plates passing throu h the bla e and the other plate, a nut for a 'usting the curvature of the blade to vary the keenness 0f the' cut, and a slitted conical tube forming part of or attached to one of the plates to guide the pencil during the sharpening of the pencil.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto'set my hand. a
HERBERT MURRAY HARTE.
