One object of my present invention is to provide an abrasive and a holder therefor which are particularly adapted for sharpening and stropping safety razor blades and which are of simple and durable construction and comparatively inexpensive from a manufacturing standpoint.
A further object is 'to provide an abrasive which is detachably connected with a holder and can accordingly be replaced when desired at 0 little expense, the abrasive itself being in the form of a sheet of relatively thin stiif flexible material which may have abrasive coatings on one or both sides or may have an abrasive coating on one side and be formed of material suitable for razor blade stropping purposes so that it does not need coating on the other side and whereby two grades of abrading surfaces are thereby provided for sharpening and strapping purposes or for coarse and fine'sharpening purposes as desired.
Still a further object is to provide the abrasive of flexible material so that it can readily fit the shape of the holder and to make it relatively stiff so that it can be held under tension against the i holder, the holder having lips at the ends thereof for receiving the ends of the abrasive and being provided with corrugations which are under tension when the abrasive is in installed position for thus holding the abrasive against the holder.
Still a further object is to provide the holder of sheet metal or the like which will retain its shape but may be manually reformed for changing its shape or curvature, this being particularly desirable to reduce the radius ofthe curve of the 1 holder for narrow razor blades and increase it for wide ones.
Still a further object is to provide the holder with an opening through which the abrasive may be engaged for ejecting the abrasive from the i holder by reversing its curvature.
Still a further object is to provide the corrugations of such form and in such position that they serve as a convenient support for the abrasive holder on a table or-the like and also serve .as hand grips when using the holder and abrasive in the hand of the user.
With these and other objects in View my invention consists in'the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of Imy device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

On the accompanying drawing, I have used the reference character A to indicate an abrasive and the reference character B to indicate generally a holder therefor. The abrasive A is preferably provided with opposite surfaces of difierent grades of abrasives.
I have shown the surface 10, for instance; coated with an abrasive which is of a relatively fine grade suitable for safety razor blade sharpening. The opposite side 11 thereof may be coated with a still finer abrasive or may be uncoated if the material of the abrasive A is of suitable consistency. A leather-like or fiber composition may be used, for instance, which has the necessary quality for stropping the cutting edge of a razor blade. It will be obvious that va-- rious coatings or various materials for the abrasive may be used as found desirable by experiment and that muchcoarser abrasive coatings may be used when the abrasive and holder are provided for sharpening tools and the like. The body of the abrasive A is relatively thin,fiexibleand stiff for purposes which will hereinafter become obvious. I r 1 The holder B for the abrasive A'is preferably formed of sheet metal which will normallyretain its shape but has some resiliency and the shape of which can be manually reformed, whereupon it will retain such'reformed shape. The holder B is provided with corrugations 12 and the ends of the holder are provided with lips 14. In Figures 1 and 4 I have shown the holder B as of curved formation with the abrasive A against the concave side thereof.
The distance between the bottoms of the lips 14 as measured along the concave side of the holder B is normally slightly less than the length of the abrasive A. This is illustrated by dotted lines in Figure 4, the position of the lips 14. being indicated at 14 As shown in Figure 3, the abrasive A may be installed relative to the holder B by placing it in the full line position and thereafter pressing downward on the center whereupon the abrasive will assume the position A and upon further downward movement of the center of the abrasive it will snap into the position of Figure 4 wherein it has spread the lips 14* to the position 14. The corrugations 12 open up slightly to permit such spreading of the lips and the holder B being made of resilient material thus places the abrasive under tension to hold it firmly against the concave side of the holder. The abrasive being of flexible material will buckle to Ward the concave side of the holder and being stiff will not be deformed but will follow the curvature of the holder throughout the length thereof.
The holder B may be provided with formed beads 16 to reinforce the holder and help it to retain its shape. As illustrated by dotted lines in Figuure 3, the length of the holder 13 may be reduced so that the lip will assume the position 14 to thus accommodate a shorter abrasive A. The holder being of material which can be manually reformed and also being of material which will retain its shape can thus be adjusted for different lengths of abrasives. It can also be adjusted for obtaining the proper tension on the abrasive when installed.
As shown in Figures 5 and 6, different curvatures of abrasives are necessary to properly fit the bevels of different widths of safety razor blades.
In Figure 5, a narrow blade 18 is illustrated and the radius of the curvature of the abrasive is less than the radius of the curvature in Figure 6 wherein the abrasive fits a wider blade 20. In Figure 4 a blade 22 is illustrated and a hand 24 is shown holding the abrasive holder. The
" finger point 26 and the thumb heel 28 it will be noted, are engaged with the corrugations 12 to effectively support the holder in the hand 24 so that the blade 22 can then be sharpened by a finger 30 of the other hand. The corrugations 12 also serve as supports on a flat surface 32, as shown in Figure 3.
The lips 14 it will be obvious act as guards to protect the hand 24 from the blade 22 since the blade cannot extend past the ends of the abrasive A because of the lips. This also prevents the finger 30 and the blade 22 from slipping. off the abrasive at its ends. As shown in Figure l, the
abrasive A may be removed by buckling in the.
opposite direction as indicated at A. An opening 34. is provided in the holder A through which the operator may thrust his finger for engaging the side of the abrasive A adjacent the holder and buckling the abrasive to the position A. Thereafter it will spring to the full line position iof Figure 3 and can readily be removed and reversed.
It will be obvious that the abrasive A can be slid sidewise out of the lips 14, but being under tension considerable friction is present and the method of ejection by engaging the abrasive through the opening 34 is easier and quicker in operation.
Although I have shown my abrasive holder of curved formation, it may also be straight as indicated in Figures 7 and 8. In these figures the corrugations 12 serve to place the abrasive A under very slight tension so that there is no end play of the abrasive relative to the holder, but the tension cannot be as great as when the holder is curved as in Figure 1. The form of the device shown in Figure 7 may be used on straight razors or forsharpening tools where a straight ratherthan a curved abrasive surface is desired. The abrasive can be reversed relative to the holder as described in connection with the curved holder.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts of my device without departing. from the real spirit and purpose of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my claims, any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents, which may be reasonably included within their scope.
I claim as my invention:
1. An abrasive of relatively thin stiff flexible material and a holder therefor having lips on the ends thereof for receiving the ends of said abrasive, said holder being curved and a pair of spaced corrugations being formed therein having inner and outer faces, the outer face of one corrugation being adapted to be engaged by the heel of the thumb of one hand and the outer face of the other corrugation being adapted to be engaged by the fingers thereof, whereby the holder may be held during use.
2. An abrasive of relatively thin material and a concave holder therefor having lips on the ends thereof for receiving the ends of said abrasive, said holder having a pair of spaced corrugations having inner and outer faces, the outer faces of one corrugation being adapted for engagement by the heel of the thumb of one hand of the user and the outer face of the other corrugation being adapted for engagement by the fingers of said hand, whereby the holder may be gripped during use thereof, said holder having an opening there through between said corrugations for manually reversing the convex side of said abrasive to a concave shape for ejecting the abrasive from the holder.
3. An abrasive and a holder therefor, said holder having a concave face terminating in end flanges extending toward the center of the holder, said abrasive being positioned against said WILLIAM G. DUNN.
