Definitions
- This invention refers to a device for sharpening the points of pencils, once a port-ion of the graphite has been exposed by cutting away the wood around it.
- the device is also par- 5 tioularly applicable to the sharpening of the leads of automatic pencils, no preliminary preparation being needed.
- the device in question is essentially composed of two portions, made of any kind of rasp, emery paper, or other similar material, united to a support which permits the said rasping portions to form a variableangular opening, and they are subjected to the action of a spring so that the angle may not be maintained too rigidly, avoiding in this manner the breakage of the points to be sharpened.
- a stop mounted on a screw, serves to graduate the angle formed by the two rasping portions.
- Fig. 1 being a section
- Fig. 2 being a perspective view of the same.
- the device is composed of two parts, 1 and 2, which carry the two rasping portions 3 and 4:. These two parts 1 and 2 of the support are mounted as indicated inv Fig. 1 by means of an axle 5, which permits an opening movement to be efi'ected by pressure of the fingers, this movement being similar to that of a pair of scissors or a pair of tongs. The pressure is exerted by the fingers on the parts 6 and 7 of the support.
- a torsion spring 8 efiects the closing of the 35 angle formed by the two portions of the rasps Serial No. 242,2:1.
- a screw 9 which traverses the portion of the rasp 3 and the part of the support on which it is mounted, serves to graduate the size of the angular opening form ed by the two portions destined for the rasping operation.
- a device for sharpening leads of propelling pencils comprising in combination apair of hingedly connected metal-jaws having each on the inner side a layer of abrading material, a rearward extension of each aw bent in out ward direction, a. spring on the hinge connecting said two jaws the ends of said spring hearing against said extensions to spread the same, and an adjusting screw guided in one of said jaws and in the coating layer of the same adapted to adjust the angle at which said jaws open.

R. M. CATA DEVICE FOR SHARPENING THE POINTS OF PENCILS Filed Dec. 23, 19 27 i Patented Dec. 11, 1923.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIQE.
DEVICE FOR SHARPENING THE POINTS OF PENOTLS.
Application filed December 23, 1927.
This invention refers to a device for sharpening the points of pencils, once a port-ion of the graphite has been exposed by cutting away the wood around it. The device is also par- 5 tioularly applicable to the sharpening of the leads of automatic pencils, no preliminary preparation being needed.
The device in question is essentially composed of two portions, made of any kind of rasp, emery paper, or other similar material, united to a support which permits the said rasping portions to form a variableangular opening, and they are subjected to the action of a spring so that the angle may not be maintained too rigidly, avoiding in this manner the breakage of the points to be sharpened. A stop, mounted on a screw, serves to graduate the angle formed by the two rasping portions.
In the attached d awings may be seen an example of the kind of apparatus covered by the present patent, Fig. 1 being a section and Fig. 2 being a perspective view of the same.
The device is composed of two parts, 1 and 2, which carry the two rasping portions 3 and 4:.
A torsion spring 8 efiects the closing of the 35 angle formed by the two portions of the rasps Serial No. 242,2:1.
3 and 4 when the pressure of the fingers is relaxed.
A screw 9 which traverses the portion of the rasp 3 and the part of the support on which it is mounted, serves to graduate the size of the angular opening form ed by the two portions destined for the rasping operation.
On introducing the points of the pencils be tween the two rasping portions 3 and 4:, the graduation having been eliected according to the requirements 01 each case, all that is necessary, to perfectly sharp-en the points, is to rotate the pencils, and the said operation is extremely simple and rapid, there being also no danger of the graphite breaking.
The device above described may be modilied in respect to the form and disposition of the component parts, without these variations affecting the essential nature of the invention.
Claim:
A device for sharpening leads of propelling pencils, comprising in combination apair of hingedly connected metal-jaws having each on the inner side a layer of abrading material, a rearward extension of each aw bent in out ward direction, a. spring on the hinge connecting said two jaws the ends of said spring hearing against said extensions to spread the same, and an adjusting screw guided in one of said jaws and in the coating layer of the same adapted to adjust the angle at which said jaws open.
' In testimony whereof I aliix my signature.
