RAZOR SHARPENER.
Application filed March 12, 1928. Serial No. 260,851.
The invention relates to a device for sharpening-or stropping safety razor blades and more particularly to a simple andinexpensive device which may be used in con'unction with a razor of the Gillette type or stropping u on the razor, the device being adaptable .fiir sharpening blades of other types bymanually holding the blades in the device during the sharpening or stropping thereof.
The object of the improvement is to pro vide a razor sharpener having a manually rotatable roll covered with. leather or the like and provided with means for detachably conmeeting the same to a razor of the Gillette type in such position that the roll will engage the cuttin edge of the razor blade, whereby rotation of the roll will sharpen the blade.
The device is also adapted for sharpening blades of various other types without attaching it to the razor, the blade bein held in the device between the thumb and fingers, with the cutting edge in "contact with the roll which may be manually rotated with the other hand to-sharpen the blade.
An embodiment of the invention thus set forth in general terms'is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a Gillette type of razor, showing the improved sharpening device connected thereto in position for sharpening'the blade;

Fig. 3, a section taken substantially on the line 3-3, Fig. 2;
Fig. 4, a plan view of a modified form of the invention adapted for' sharpening blades of various other t pes; and
Fig. 5, an end elevation of thesame, showing the blade held in place therein in position for sharpening.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawing.
The handle of the razor is shown at 1, the top plate at 2 and the blade at 3. The blade is shown provided with the usual central aperture 4 and side apertures 5 to receive the central threaded stud 6 carried by the top plate for connection of the handle and the usual pins 7 upon the top plate respectively.
The form of the invention ilIustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive is best adapted for attaching to a Gillette razor to sharpen or strop the blade when'placed in position in the razor.
In this form of the invention, the sharpening device may include a wire frame shown generally at 8 having the central V-shaped portion 9 for engagement around the threaded stud 6 of the top plate and the inclined oppositely disposed portions 10 for engagement with the pins 7 of the top plate.
The parallel legs 11 are located at the ends of this frame and provided with eyes 12, in which are journaled the pintles 13 of a roll 14.
This roll may be provided with a covering of leather or the like, preferably of spiral form as shown at 15 and a handle 16 may be fixed to one of the pintles 13 for manually rotating the roll in the direction of the arrow shown 1n Fig. 1.
In attaching the device to the razor for sharpening or stropping the blade, the parts are assembled as shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, the blade being first placed in position upon the top plate 2, with the studs 6 and 7 projecting through the apertures of the blade.
The sharpening device is then placed in position as best shown in Figs. 2 and 3 with the V-portion 9 and inclined portions 10 engaging the central stud 6 and pins 7 respectively, and the handle is then screwed onto the stud 6, giving the blade the curvature best shown in Fig. 2 and pressing the roll 14: against the cutting edge 17 of the blade.
The razor is then held in the left hand and the handle 16 of the device is rotated in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1, with the right hand, stropping this edge of the blade.
It will be seen that in order to-sharpen the other cutting edge of the Gillette blade, it is only necessary to loosen the handle 1 of the razor and reverse the position of the sharpening device so that the roll 14 contacts with the opposite edge of the blade.
In order to better adapt the device for sharpening blades of various other types, a modified form of frame may be provided for carrying the roll such as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5.
In this form of theinvention, the roll and handle may be identically the same as above described and the frame shown generally at 18 may be formed of sheet metal having the apertures 19 and 20 for engagement with the threaded stud 6 and the pins 7 respec tively, of the top plate of a Gillette razor.
The rear edge of the frame plate 18 may be provided with the upturned flange 23 to adapt the device for sharpening blades of various other types having only a single cutting edge as shown generally at 24 in Fig. 5.
In order to sharpen'such blades, it is not necessary to attach the device to the razor, the blade being simply placed in the device as shown in Fig. 5 with the back resting against the flange 23 and the cutting edge 25 resting upon the top of the roll.
The blade may be held in this position with the thumb and forefinger of one hand and the handle 16 rotated in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 5 with the other hand, thus sharpening the cutting edge of the blade.
It should be understood that the flange 23 is so located with reference to the roll that when using this type of the sharpener upon a Gillette razor, the rear cutting edge of the razor blade will extend beyond this flange, the upper edge of the flange contacting with the lower side of the razor blade near the rear edge thereof.
From the above, it will be seen that a simple, inexpensive and efiicient device is provided for sharpening or stropping safety razor blades of Various types, the device being adapted to be attached directly to the Gillette razor as shown in Figs. 1 to 3 or to receive the blade for sharpening as shown. in Fig. 5.
I claim:
1. In combination with a razor including a top plate and a handle detachably connected thereto and a blade located adjacent to the top plate, a sharpening device including a frame adapted to be clamped between the top plate and handle, a roll carried by the frame and adapted to contact with a cutting edge of the blade and. means for rotating the roll.
2. In combinationwith a razor including a top plate having an attaching stud and a handle for connection to said stud and a blade adapted to be located between the top plate and handle and having an aperture to receive said stud, a sharpening device including a frame adapted to be clamped between the top plate and handle and having a portion engaging said stud, a roll carried by the frame and adapted to contact with a cutting edge of the blade, and means for rotating said roll.
3. In combination with a razor including a top plate having an attaching stud and a pair of spaced pins and a handle for connection to the stud, and a blade adapted to be located between the top plate and handle and having apertures to receive said stud and pins, a sharpening device including a frame adapted to be clamped between the top plate and handle and having portions engaging said stud and pin, a roll carried by the frame and adapted to contact with a cutting edge of the blade, and means for rotating the roll.
