H. M. HARTE.

MM'MM PATENT OFFICE.
HERBERT MURRAY HARTE, OF MANCHESTER, ENGLAND;
PENCIL SHARPENER.
Application filed September 30, 1920, Serial No. 413,858. Renewed December '12, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT MURRAY HARTE, subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and resident of Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain Improvements in Pencil Sharpeners, of which the follow ing is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in.
pencil Sharpeners, the object being to provide a device in which safety razor blades of the double-cutting or single edge typeand particularly such as have been discarded after use for shaving purposes-may be used as the pencil-sharpening medium.
With the aforesaid objects in view myinvention comprises a hinged or clamping device in which the razor blade can be firmly held in the required cutting position combined with means for guiding the pencil to be sharpened with relation to the cutting blade and means for adjusting the latter to vary the keenness of the out.
In the drawings- Fig. .1. is .a plan of the complete device in open form showing the blade in position,
Fig. 2, plan of the device in the closed or using position.
Fig. 3, end elevation of same.
I provide a device preferably made of sheet metal but not confined to that mate-' rial. The holder consists of two parts aand b hinged together at 0 one of the .parts being provided with upstanding projections d on to which the holes a in the razor blade f are passed. Three projections are'shown in the drawings though the two outer ones are only necessary. The projections may be.
struck up from the plate material or consist of short studs riveted to the plate. They.
are substantially the same diameter as the holes in the razor blade f and are designed to hold the cutting edge of the latter in position. The second plate I) is provided with holes 9 in register with the projections d when the holder is closed as in Fig. 2, the projections passing into the holes when the plate I) is turned about the hinge 0' into the position shown in Fig. 2. In order 'to hold the blades firmly between the plates one of the latter 6 has pivoted to it at it a catch or clamp z adapted to enclose the free ends of the plates tightly. The engaging edges of Specification of Letters Patent.

a is a hollow conical tube j arranged adjacent to the cutting edge of the razor blade for the time being in use, suchtube having a sllt k at one side into which the cutting edge of the blade projects slightly. Such a conical tube is, of course, well known in pencil-sharpening devices. Its object is to recelve and guide the pencil to be sharpened. Sharpening is effected by rotating the pencil against the cutting blade in the usual way, the shavings escaping through the slit in. The position of the conical tube is such that only a portion of the razor blade is in use at a time. That is to say one edge only where double edged blades are used. When one edge becomes dull, or a portion of said v edge the blade can be turned over end to end or from side to side thus giving four different cutting edges.
The plates may be hinged at one side instead of at one end.
What I claim as m .invention and desire to secure byLetters atent is 1. A pencil sharpener, comprising two plates, one of which has a conical guide arranged at one side of it and provided with a longitudinal slit, and a blade clamped between the said-plates and provided with a cutting edge which projects into the said slit and sharpens the pencil when the pencil is revolved in the guide.
2. A pencil sharpener, comprising two hinged plates, one of which has a conical guide arranged at one side of it and provided with a longitudinal slit, one of the said plates having also projections which engage with holes in the other plate, and a blade provide d..with holes which also engage with the said projections, said blade being clamped between the said plates and provided with a cutting edge which projects into the said slit and sharpens the pencil when the pencil is revolved in the guide.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
