Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Dec. fid, 1.921.
Application fi1ed April 11, 1921. Serial No. 460,324.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l. flmvnn .1. LAU, citizen of the United Sta es, residing at -lzmburg, in the county or .ferliis and etc of Pennsylvania, have invented ertain new and useful Improvements in Ladies Undergarments, of which. the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to ladies undergarments and especially aims to provide a union suit with a closed crotch which will be characterized by all the advantages of the open crotch type of garment, at the same time eliminating obvious undesirable features of the latter mentioned type of ,9 urment. l
Among the objects of this invention are to provide a garment which is seamless on the back thereby increasing the longevity of the garment and making it more comfortable to the wearer; to provide a garment of simple construction which may be manufactured at a relatively low cost; and to provide a garment which by its inherent construction affords a. maximum elasticity 111filing it unnecessary to increase the size of the garment, especially the leg portions, for vent purposes, correspondingly preventing undue bulge of the garment.
Other objects of this invention will be apparent from the general description of the invention following talren in connection with the accompanying drawings which depirts the preferred form of the invention.
Figure 1 is a front elevetionel view of a garment constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary rear elevational view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side elevzitional view of one of the legs of the garment illustrating to advantage the manner of connectin the leg insert.
T ig. e is a front perspective view of the garment illustrating its application.
Fig. 5 is a rear perspective view of the garment illustrating its application.
Fig. 6 is a front elevational view of the garment in blank showing the leg inserts removed and positioned at the opposite sides of the blank, and
Fig. 7 is a fragmentaryside elevational view of the garment in blank.
The device of this invention consists of a body generally designated 8 which in the present instance consists of a garment upper 9 which is adapted to embrace the body of the wearer and is of substantially uni form diameter from the shoulders to the waist line. The upper margins of the body ere formed to provide semi-circular neck portions 16 and semi-circular arm recesses 11. The portions of the garment between the neck portion and arm recesses rise upwardly to points which issue into shoulder straps 12.
The back of the upper 9 issues into a panel 13 which gradually tapers outwardly and is incised or bifurcated, as indicated at 1 1, at a point approximately midway between the lateral margins of the panel. The panel 13 extends downwardly over the rear of the wearer and the lower ends or furcations 15 of the garment ts minate at approximately the knees of the wearer.
The front of the upper 9 issues into a V- shaped portion 16 the apex of which terminates at the inner end of the incision. 14. shown to advantage in F 6, the lateral margins of the portion 16 are remote from the lateral margins of the panel 13 and lie parallel with the latter. Preferably, the incision or bifurcation 141: tapers outwardly toward the lower ends of the furcations 15 for an obvious purpose.
in order to complete the leg portions of the garment, inserts 17 are provided each of which. is of a configuration vhich complements the configuration of the furcations 15 and the V-shaped memlzier The outer lateral margins of the inserts 17 are engageable with the outer lateral margins of the panel 13, while the, inner lateral margins are secured to the marginal edges of the member 16 and the inner marginal edges of the furcations 15. l Vhen secured in this way the leg portions will be substantially circular in cross section.
Preferably, a garment made in accordance with this invention is knit and in view of its manner of construction, the seems at the juncture of the inserts with the body may be finished on a flatlock machine. Since the upper portion of the body is of a. substantially uniform diameter from the shoulders to the waistline, the garment will snugly embrace the wearer. The configuration of the leg portions insures comfort and ample latitude for vent purposes, at the same time relieving undue fullness or bulge of the garment. Moreover, in view of the construction of the garment the latter presents.
a skirt efi'ect at the rear as illustrated to advantage in Fig. 5. I
Various changes may be made in this device especially in the style of the garmentthe materials from which it is made and the proportion and arrangement oi'f the parts. v I have above described however What I deem to be the preferred form of this in vention.
,1. A ladies undergarnient including an integral body to envelop the bust, waist and hips and extending downwardly at the rear to the knees, the lower portion of the front of the garment being t -shaped with the apex terminating at the croteh and inserts secured to the margin of said V shaped portion and to the lateral margins of the down- Wardly extended portion at the rear to provide legs. 7 y
2. A ladies undergarment including an integral body suspended from the shoulders embodying an upper of substantially uniform diameter from the shoulders to the Waist line, the rear or said body issuing into a panel which tapers outwardly at the lower end and is bifurcated at a point approximately midway between the lateral margins of the panel, the front of said body issuing into a f-shaped extension which terminates at the inner end of the bifurcation, and inserts secured, to the said panel and said V-shaped extension substantially as described. l
in testimony whereof I afiix my in presence of two witnesses.
