IMPROVEMENT IN BRlDLE-BITS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,023, dated June 17, 1873 application filed April 4, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known thatI, J ULES MAURICE FABRJi, of Bordeaux, France, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bridle-bits; and and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a plan view of my bit. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same in the plane 00 as, Fig. 1, and looking in the direction of the arrow opposite to that line. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a modification of the same.

This invention relates to a bridle-bit, the mouth-piece of which has a revolving or oscillating motion in theside bars, and is made fiat, and with rounded edges, while the side- 7 bars are provided with stops which limit the oscillations of the mouth-piece, in such a manner that when the rein is strained the mouth-piece bears with its flat surface upon the mouth of the horse, and all undue pain is avoided.

In the drawing, the letter A designates the mouth-piece of my bit, which is made flat, with its corners or edges carefully rounded. The ends of this mouth-piece form gudgeons,

b, which are fitted into holes in the side bars B, being retained therein. by heads, 0, which are riveted or otherwise fastened to the extreme ends of said gudgeons. In the inner surfaces of the side bars B, are secured pins, d, which form. stops, whereby the rotary motion of the mouth-piece is confined within oertainlimits. The mouth-piece may be curved, as shown in Fig. 3.

In hits, as usually constructed, the mouthpiece is rigidly attached to the side bars, and if the rein is strained, the bit subjects the horse to a severe pain, which in many cases causes him. to run away. This disadvantage is successfully avoided by my bit, and at the same time by means of the stops in the side bars the required pressure can be effected to hold a restive horse.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A bridle-bit, the mouthpiece of which has an oscillating motion, independent of and within the side bars, which have stops confining said oscillating motion of the mouthpiece within certain limits, substantially as W shown and described.
