Description
H, C.. MAXWELL.
CHECK BIT.
Patented Dec.19,1882.
(No Model.)
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY C. MAXWELL, OF ROME, NEW YORK.
CHECK-BIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,304, dated December 19, 1882, Application filed October 30, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY C. MAXWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rome, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Check- Bit, of which'the following isa specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved bridle-bit. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 3 is an end view.v
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to check-bits for har ness; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, whereby the lines may be readily attached ordctachcd without sewing or the use of separate buckles, and by which a useful and comfortable bit is produced which is not liable to injure the horses mouth, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
A in the drawings lrepresents the body of my improved bit, which consists of a round bar of suitable dimensions. The ends B are bent at right angles to the body A and flattened so as to form plates, each of which is provided with two horizontal slots,O, so as to form practically a buckle-frame with a crosspiece or bridge, D, separating the said slots.
Said cross-piece D is provided with an out- Wardly-projecting stud, e. The plates B are provided on their inner sides, just above the bar A, with shallow recesses F to receive the ends of the lines G, which are shaved down thin, so as to be readily accommodated in said recesses. The lines G are provided near their ends with perforations H, which, when the said ends are passed through the slots G C, lit over t-hc studs e, and thus serve to connect the lines with the bit. The ends ofthe lilies, being accommodated in the recesses F, are flush with the inner sides of the plates B, and consequently do not gall or irritate the mouth of the horse.
My improved bit is simple, inexpensive, and may be easily and quickly connected with or detached from the lines without the use of separate buckles or stitching.
I claim as my invention- 1. The bit A, having flattened ends B, provided with slots O, and cross-pieces D, having studs e, as set forth.
2. The bit A, having iiattened ends B, provided with slots C, cross-pieces D, having studs e, and recesses F, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY OLAY MAXWELL.
