12 Y WII/111% 7/ BENJAMIN E. D. STAFFORD AND ETHAN I. DODDS, ASSIGNORS T0 FLANNERY BOLT COMPANY, OF
STAYBOLT STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 12, 1919. Serial No. 323,361.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, BENJAMIN E. D. STAFFORD and ETHAN I. Donns, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay bolt Structures; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers,'one object of the invention being to provide a bearing sleeve or member for the bolt head, which shall have a universally movable or adjustable mounting in the boiler sheet and which shall be capable of being mounted in the boiler sheet so that its outer end will be substantially flush with the outer face of the boiler sheet, or be capable of being mounted on the boiler sheet so that it will project outwardly beyond the boiler sheet, and to provide efiicient means whereby the said universally movable or adjustable beau ing sleeve shall be firmly secured to the boiler sheet after it shall have been accurately adjusted to insure proper alinement of the points of connection oi the staybolt with the respective boiler sheets.
With this and other'objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure l is a sectional view partly in elevation showing an embodiment of our invention illustrating one way in which the bearing sleeve or member may be mounted in the boiler sheet, and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing another manner in which the bearing sleeve or member may be mounted in the boiler sheet.
1 represents an outer boiler sheet and 2 the inner sheet of a boiler.
In the embodiment of our invention shown in Fig. 1, the outer boiler sheet is provided with an opening 3, a portion 4 of the wall of which may be made tapering and straight throughout a portion of the thickness of the sheet, and another portion, 5, of the Wall of said opening is made rounded to form a seat on which bearing sleeve or of the wall sheet when her that its outer end 0F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
Patented Dec. 6, 1921 member 6 may have a universally movable or adjustable mounting.
The bearing sleeve or member is made interiorly with a rounded seat 7 for the rounded. head 8 at the outer end of a staybolt 9the nner end secured to the inner suitable manner. The body bearing sleeve or riorly, as at 10. The of the sleeve is made curved or rounded of the latter being boller sheet 2 in any portion of the so as to afford a universally movable mounting for the it is desirable sleeve in the sleeve on the curved portion 5 of the opening in the boiler to mount the outer boiler sheet in such manshall be substantially flush with the outer face of said boiler sheet, as shown in Fig. 1.
When the bearing sleeve or member 6 shall have been properly adjusted on its seat in the boiler sheet to insure accurate alinement of the points of connection of the staybolt with the respective boiler sheets,
the head 11 of said her will be welded bearing sleeve or memto the boiler sheet, as
shown at 12. The weld 12 is effected with the use of a suitable welding alloy occupying the groove formed by a portion of the enlargement 11 and the straight portion 4.
of the opening in the boiler sheet.
The enlarged outer end portion 11 of the bearing sleeve or member 6 may be threaded interiorly to receive tion 14 to receive a a hollow plug or closure 13 having an angular porwrench, sald angular threaded portion lying flush with the outer face of the outer boiler sheet and the outer end of the bearing sleeve or member. A may be located between the inner end of gasket 15 the plug and a shoulder 16 .within the sleeve or bearing member 6.
When it is desired to mount the bearing sleeve in the openlng 1n the boiler sheet so that it will project stead of inwardly adjustable feature of ofthevwall of sheet will be made to afford outwardly therefrom inas shown in Fig. l and still preserve the universally movable or the device, a portion the opening 3 in the boiler a rounded seat 17 on which the rounded exterior portion 10 of the bearing sleeve or member has a universally movable or adjustable mountingas shown in Fig. 2. When the bearing sleeve or member 6 is thus installed, it will project partially through the opening 3 in the boiler sheet and when it shall have been properly adjusted to insure accurate alinement of the bolt with its points of connection with the respective boiler sheets, it will be Welded to the outer boiler sheet by a weld 18 surrounding the bodyportion of the sleeve near its juncture with the enlarged head portion 11 of said sleeve.
Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a staybolt'structure, a bearing member having an internal seat for the head of a staybolt, said bearing member having its body portion rounded exteriorly lengthwise ot the member and having a transveisely rounded annular head at its outer en 2. In a staybolt structure, a bearing memher having an internal seat for the head of a staybolt, said bearing member having at one end an annular, transversely curved enlargement.
3. In a staybolt structure, the combina tion with a boiler sheet having an opening, of a bearing member having an annular ing member to the boiler sheet.
4. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having a bolt opening, of a bearing member provided at one end with an annular transversely curved enlargement to have an initial universally movable mounting in said opening, and a staybolt having a head mounted in said 7 bearing member.
5. In a staybolt structure, a bearing member having an annular transversely curved head at its outer enchand at its inner end an exterior rounded portion and an interior seat for'the headof a staybolt.
In testimony whereof, we have signed this specification in the presence of a subscribing witness.
