Description
J. R. FLANNERY AND E. I. DOD DS.
STAYBOLT STRUCTURE. APPLICATION FILED SEPT- 10, I9l9.
1,347,539. Patented July 27, 1920.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
7 JOHN ROGERS FLANNERY AND ETLIAN DODDS, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA,
ASSIGNORS TO FLANNERY BOLT COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
STAYBOLT srnncrunn.
Application filed September 10, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN Roenns FLAN- NERY and ETHAN I. Donne, citizens of the United States, andresidents of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in staybolt Structures; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers, and more particularly to such as employ a bearing sleeve in the mounting of the headed outer end of the staybolt, the object of the invention being to provide '-,a structure in which a sleeve having a conical threadless portion passes partially throng a bolt opening in the boiler sheet and seated on a conical portion of the wall of said opening, an inner portion of said opening being made flaring to accommodate the swing or clearance of the bolt, and to provide simple means securing said bearing sleeve to the boiler sheet so that it will be integral with the latter after it shall have been correctly mounted on the boiler sheet.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a sectional view showing an embodiment of our invention, and Figs. 2 and 3 are views of modifications.
1 represents an outer boiler sheet and 2 an inner boiler sheet.
The outer boiler sheet is provided with openings, such as shown at 3, for the accommodation of the headed ends of staybolts 4i and the latter are secured at their inner ends to the inner boiler sheet in any suitable manner.
Each opening 3 in the outer boiler sheet is made with a conical or tapering wall 5, extending inwardly from the outer face of the sheet approximately to or slightly beyond the center of the thickness of the sheet, and said opening 3 is also so formed that the inner portion of its wall .shall flare from the inner end of the tapering wall 5 to the inner face of the sheet, as indicated Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented July 27, 1920. Serial No. 322,870.
at 6. Thus the bolt opening in the outer sheet is so formed that a portion of its wall (5) flares toward the outer face of the sheet to receive the conical or tapering portion of a bearing sleeve and so that the remain ing portion (6) of said well flares toward the inner. face of the sheet to provide for the swing or clearance of the staybolt.
The bearing sleeve for the head 4* of the bolt is indicated at 7 and comprises a cylindrical outer portion 8 and a tapering or conical inner portion 9, the latter entering the opening 3 and resting against the tapering or flaring wall of said opening, the form and proportions of said tapering portion of the sleeve relatively to opening 3 in the boiler sheet being such that when the sleeve is in place at right angles to the plane of the boiler sheet, said tapering or conical portion shall terminate at its inner end approximately coincident with the iner end of the tapering wall 5 of said opening.
The conical portion of the bearing sleeve 7 is rounded interiorly to form a seat for the rounded head 4* of the staybolt and the cylindrical portion of the sleeve may be threaded internally for the reception of a threaded plug or closure 10 which closes the outer end of the sleeve over the head of the staybolt.
When the staybolt and its bearing sleeve shall have been properly installed, the bearing sleeve will be fixedly and integrally united to the boiler sheet with the use of a weld 11 surrounding said sleeve approximately at the juncture of the cylindrical and tapering portion thereof.
In the embodiment of our invention shown in Fig. 2, the wall 5 of the opening 3 in the boiler sheet is made short or shallow and curved to form a seat or bearing for the curved or rounded tapering end 12 of a conical or tapering bearing sleeve or housing 13 in which the head 4 of the staybolt 4 is mounted. The inner flaring wall 6 of the opening 3 extends from the inner end of curved wall 5 to the inner face of the boiler sheet.
In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the same construction of bearing sleeve or housing 13 as shown in Fig. 2 may be employed, but the flaring outer wall 5 of the opening 3 is made straight in a direction transversely of the sheet as in Fig. 1, but may be shorter than shown in said Fig. 1 and longer than the curved bearing wall 5 shown in Fig. 2. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the flaring wall (3" of the opening 3 extends from the inner end of the st 'aight bearing wall 5 to the inner face of the sheet.
Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
l. In a staybolt structure, the combina tion with a boiler sheet provided with an opening having a wall which flares outwardly from an intermediate portion of the thickness of the sheet to the outer face thereof, oi a bearing sleeve having a tapering portion mounted on said flaring wall, a staybolt having a head mounted in said sleeve, and means fixedly uniting said sleeve to the boiler sheet.
2. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet provided with a bolt opening having a wall which tapers from the outer face of the sheet partially through the thickness of the sheet, of a bearing sleeve having a tapering portion mounted on saidtapering wall of the opening and terminating approximately coincident with the inner end of said tapering wall, a staybolt having a head mounted in said sleeve, and a weld integrally uniting said sleeve to the boiler sheet.
8. In a staybolt structure, the combination of a boiler sheet provided with an opening, a portion 01": the wall of said opening tapering inwardly from the outer face of the sheet and the remaining portion of the wall of said opening tapering from the inner face of the sheet to the inner end of V the first mentioned tapering wall, a sleeve having a tapering portion mounted on said first mentioned tapering wall, a staybolt having a head mounted in said sleeve, and means fixedly securing said sleeve to the boiler sheet.
In testimony whereof we have signed this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
