BENJAMIN n. n. srarronn AND ETI-IAN I. nonns, or :errrsnunen, PENNSYLVANIA,
' I .ASSIGNORS T0 FLANNERY BOLT COMPANY, OFPITT SBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
j STAYBOLT STRUCTURE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BENJAMIN E. D. STAFFORD and E'rnAN I. DODDS, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new anduseful Improvements in Staybolt Structures, and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I This invention relates to improvements 1n staybolt structures, .one object of the invention being to provide a structure 111 whlch the bearing sleeve or member for the spherical or spheroidal head of a staybolt, shall be sov mounted in the outer boiler sheetthat it ,will become so disposed as to insure accurate 'alinement with the bolt opening of the inner boiler sheet when the two boiler sheets are disposed at an angle to each other or when the openings in parallel boiler sheets are not in accurate alinement, and to provide: means whereby the bearing member may be secured in the position 1n which it may be set or adjusted.
With this and other'objects in View, the
. invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims, l 1 In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a sectional view illustrating an eIl'lbOClP ment of our invention, and Figs. 2 and 8 aresimilar views showing certain modificag tions. I I 1 represents an inner'boiler sheet, and 2 an outer boiler sheet such, for example, as
the roof sheet which is disposed at ans-angle to said innersheet, 1 Theouter or root sheet 2 is made'with openings, each ofwhich'may be tapering- 'viz. made larger at theouter end than at Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 30, 1919.

Serial No. 293,629.
made with an opening 5 therethrough which end of the staybolt may be threaded to pass through the inner boiler sheet 1 and this inner end of the staybolt may be upset against the inner boiler sheet, as shownat 9.
The outer or upper portion of the partly spherical sleeve or bushing member 4 is threaded interiorly as at 10 to receive the external threads of a cap or closure 11 having an angular portion 12 to receive a wrench. The inner portion of the cap or closure 11 may be recessed to provide an adequate clearance space 18 between the bolt head and the cap.
IVhen the partly spherical bearing sleeve or bushing shall have become properly set or adjusted, said sleeve or bushing will be welded to the boiler roof sheet 2 with the use of a wvelding alloy (as indicated at 14) which is located around said sleeve or bushing in a manner to become welded to the same and to the boiler roof sheet and to enter anyrecess (as at 15) which may oc cur between the outer face of said sleeve or bushing and the edge of the opening in the boiler sheet, said sleeve being thus 1ntimately united to the boiler sheet.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 2, the head? of the staybolt is made more nearly spherical than the bolt head 7 shown in Fig. 1. In the construction shown in'Fig. 2, the opening through the partly spherical bearing sleeve or bushings is made slightly tapering with the curved seat 4 for the bolt head at its lower endan'd said sleeve or bushing''c is made with an annular flange or extension 16 which is internally threaded as at 17 to receive an externally threaded closure 18. This closure may be provided with a flange 20 to overlie the annular flange or extension 16.
In the construction shown in Fig. 3 the sleeve or bushingindicated at 21 has a general tapering shape with the bearingfor the bolt head 7 inits lower curved or partly greater diameter at spherical portion 22. In this form, the wall of the opening 23 in the boiler roo'l or sheet the curvature of the wall of the opening in the boiler sheet, is intended to mean that said wall is curved in a direction extending from one face of the'sheet toward the other face, and the use of the term tapering in describing the opening in the boiler sheet. is intended to describe an opening which has one end than at the other.
Other changes might be made in the dey tails of construction of our invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope and hence we do not wish to restrict ourselves to the precise details herein set forth.
