STAYBOLT STRUCTURE.
Application filed August 21, 1919.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN E. D. STAF- Form, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennyslvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staybolt Structures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers, one object of the invention being to provide a simple construction which will afford a mounting for the head of the staybolt and in which a bearing member is made to rest freely against the boiler sheet around the bolt opening therein; to provide simple means whereby the bearing member shall be accurately centered and inclosed, and to so construct the device that the head of the staybolt and its hearing shall be so inclosed as to prevent leakage of steam.
\Vith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a sectional view showing my improvements applied to an inclined crown or roof sheet of a boiler, anc Fig. 2 is a view show ing my improvements applied to an outer boiler sheet when the latter is parallel with the inner or fire-box sheet.
1 represents an inclined roof sheet having an opening 2 for the accommodation of a staybolt 3 which connects the inclined root sheet with the inner boiler sheet.
A bearing member d for the head 3 of the staybolt, is mounted freely onthe inclined roof sheet. This bearing member is made with an inclined lower end which conforms to the roof sheet and its upper or outer end is in a plane which is approximately parallel with the plane of the horizontal inner boiler sheet and at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the staybolt. The bearing member is made with a curved seat for the rounded head of the staybolt and from said Specification of Letters Patent.

seat, the opening in the bearing member flares toward the roof sheet to accommodate the swing of the bolt.
The bearing member 5 is surrounded and held in place by a sleeve or housing 6 and in order that the latter shall be made to accurately center the bearing member, the boiler sheet is provided with an annular groove 7 which surrounds the bolt opening and is spaced therefrom, and into this groove, the lower beveled end of said sleeve or housing is seated.
When the sleeve or housing and bearing member are in place, the sleeve or housing will be integrally united to the boiler sheet by a weld 8 surrounding said sleeve or housmg.
The sleeve or housing 6 may be threaded interiorly for the accommodation of a plug or closure 9 the latter being formed to provide a clearance 10 and having an angular portion 11 to receive a wrench. The plug or closure is made with an annular flange 12 which overlies the outer end of the sleeve or housing 6 and between the latter and said flange, a gasket 13 is disposed.
In. the embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 2, in which my improvements a re applied to an outer boiler sheet whi h is substantially parallel with the inner boiler sheet, the respective ends of the bearing member 14: and of the sleeve or housing 15 are parallel with the boiler sheets.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having a bolt opening and an annular groove surrounding said bolt opening and spaced therefrom, of a bearing member seated on the boiler sheet between the bolt opening and said annular groove, a sleeve surrounding the bearing member and seated in said groove, means rigidly securing said sleeve to the boiler sheet, a staybolt having a head mounted on said bearing member, and a closure for said sleeve over the bolt head and bearing member.
2. In a staybolt structure, he combmation with a boiler sheet having a bolt opening and an annular groove surrounding the bolt opening and spaced therefrom, of a bearing member seated freely on the boiler sheet between the bolt opening and said annular groove, a sleevesurrounding the bearing member and seated. in said annular groove, a Weld uniting said sleeve rigidly to the boiler sheet, said sleeve having a threaded portion near its outer end, and a closure for said sleeve engaging the said threaded portion of the latter. 10
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of a subscribing witness.
BENJAMIN E. D. STAFFORD. Witness: EDWIN S. RYOE.
