STAY-BOLT STRUCTURE.
Application filed September 10, 1919. Serial Not 322,871.
T 0 all to 7mm it may concern v Be it known that we, JOHN Roenns FLAN- NERY and ETHAN I. DODDS, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh,
in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay-Bolt Structures; and we do hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable .others skilledin the art to which 1t appertains to make and use the same.
an initial universally movable or adjustable mounting relatively to -the boiler sheet whereby accurate alignment of the staybolt with its points of connection with the respective boiler sheets may be efi'ected, and
which shall be firmly united to the boiler sheet after such adjustment shall have been made, by welding.
A further object is to provide a bearing member in the form of a hollow plug to enter the opening in the boiler sheet and Welded to the latter, said bearing member or plug permanently enclosing the head of the staybolt and affording a bearing for said head, and having such interior configuration and dimensions asto provide ample clearance for the bolt head.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a sectional view showing an embodiment of our invention; Figures 2 and 3 are views illustrating the manner of making the combined bearing plug andclosure, and Figures 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 are views illustrating modifications.
1 represents the outer sheet of a boiler and 2 the inner boiler sheet.
The outer boiler sheet is made with an opening 3 having a general tapering form and a portion of the wall of said opening may be rounded transversely of the thickness of the sheet to provide a seat 4.- on which a combined bearing plug or member and closure 5 may have an initial universally movable mounting' The plug or member 5 may as made of a single piece of metal and may have the spherical form shown in Figures 1 and 3, with an opening 5 for the accommodation, of the neck of the staybolt. The blank from which the plug or member 5 is made is provided with a plurality of V-shaped notches or res cesses 6 and this blank is forged to the approximately hemispherical form shown in Figure 2. The rounded head 7 of a staybolt.
8 will be inserted into the hollow hemispherical body and inward pressure will be appliedto the fingers 9 formed by the notches 6 until the side edges of said fingers come together as shown at (SF-and the tool em-- ployed for this operation will be such that,
the portion of the device formed by the fingers 9 will be curved in conformance with the curvature of the'other portion of the device, and the latter will have the form of a sphere except at the portion thereof having the opening 5 for the passage of the bolt. The plug or member 5 has internal dimensions which are appreciably greater than those of the bolt head 7 and when the latter is mounted on the seat 10 around and in proximity to the opening 5, ample clearance space 11 will be afforded for the bolt head, and this is important in flexible staybolt structures.
The inner end portion of the staybolt is threaded as at 12 to screw through the inner boiler sheet. and said staybolt is provided at its inner extremity with an angular head 13 to receive a tool whereby the screwing of the bolt through the inner boiler sheet may be facilitated. After the staybolt shall I thebolt head, and by mounting said member V of a weld 16.
Instead of making the bearing plug and closure a single piece, it may be made in a-plurality of parts as shown in Figure 5 and secured together by a weld 17. The
multiple-part plug may have a spherical shape as shown in Figure 5 or it may be tapering or conical as shown at 5 Figure 8, to seat'in a tapering, straight-walled opening in the boiler sheet.
In the form of the invention shown in Figure 6, an elongated bearing plug and closure 5 has a universally movable mountlng at-its inner end 1n the opening 1n the boiler sheet, and at its outer end, it is pro-I vided with an angular head 18 to receive fa holding tool. A weld'19 unites the plug 5 to the outer sheet. v
In the form of the invention shown in Figure 7 anelongated taperingiplugb", is
employed and mounted in atapering opening in the boiler sheet, said opening havlng a straight wall as indicated at 20. This'plug is provided with an;angular head 21 t0 re ceive a holding tool and it is unitedf'to the enclose the head of a staybolt, a'staybolt having a head mounted in said member, and a weld securing said combined bearing member and closure to the boiler sheet, 2. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having an opening, of a spherical hollow plug'having an opening and mounted in said openingin the'boiler sheet, a staybolthaving a head permanently enclosed within saidhollow plug and hav ing a bearing therein,f and a weld uniting said hollow plug to the boiler sheet. I
In testimony whereof, wefhave signed this'specification in the subscribing witnesses v p a I, I
