ETHAN I. DODDS, 0F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO FLANNERY BOLT COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
STAYBOLT STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented June '7, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I ETHAN I. Donns, a citizen of the United tates, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in staybolt Structures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which 1t appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements 1n staybolt structures for boilers and more particularly to means affording a mounting for the headed outer end of a staybolt and its connection with a boiler sheet, objects of the invention being to so construct a twopart structure comprising a bearing member and a closure member, that said structure shall be capable of universal adjustment 111 the opening in the boiler sheet; so that one or both members may be seated against the boiler sheet; to weld a bearing structure to the boiler sheet in such manner as to confine the weld to a limited surface of the structure to facilitate removal of said structure from its welded union with the boiler sheet when removal of a broken bolt is necessary, and to so construct the device that it may be mounted with its outer end substantially flush with the outer face of the outer boiler sheet or made to project outwardly beyond the same.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims. I
In the accompanying drawings; Flgure l is a sectional view, partly in elevation, showing an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a view showing the manner of connecting the device with the boiler when a structure of the flush type is desired, and Figs. 3 and 4: are views illustrating a modification.
1 represents an outer boiler sheet and 2 the inner sheet of a boiler.
A staybolt 3 is secured in any suitable manner to the inner boiler sheet, andsaid staybolt is provided at its outer end with a head t which is connected with the outer boiler sheet as hereinafter described.
. The outer boiler sheet 1 is provided with an opening 5, the major portion of the wall of which is rounded transversely of the sheet to provide a rounded seat 6 which may extend from the outer face of the sheet approximately to the inner face. This seat receives a two-part mounting for connecting the head of the bolt with the boiler sheet, said mounting comprising a bearing member 7 and a closure member 8,the bearing member having an internal rounded seat 9 for the head of the bolt, an exterior rounded portion 10 mounted on the rounded seat 6 in the boiler sheet, and an externally threaded portion 11 which enters an internally threaded portion of the closure member. The closure member 8 is made with arounded exterior portion 12 in the same are as the rounded portion 10 of the bearing member and is mounted on the rounded seat 6 in the boiler sheet. v Thus it will be seen that both the bearing member 7 and the closure memher have universally adjustable mounting in the opening in the boiler sheet to insure proper alinement of the staybolt with its points of connection with the respective boiler sheets.
The closure member 8 is made with a circumferential groove 13 located in that portion of said member which projects beyond the boiler sheet when mounted as shown in Fig. 1. The groove 13 may contain a gasket 14 made of a material with which a welding alloy will not cohere,-such for example, as mineral wool or clay. A weld 15 surrounds the projecting portion of the closure member and the gasket 14 and unites said closure member to the boiler sheet. By the provi sion of the groove containing a material to which the welding alloy will not cohere, the extent of surface of the closure member with which the weld coheres will be restricted and hence the difiiculty of chiselingoff the weld will be reduced and the withdrawal of the structure to remove a broken bolt will be facilitated. If desired, the gasket 14 may be omitted, and the welding alloy prevented from filling the groove.
The closure member may be provided with a flange 16 at its outer end which, in the flush mounting shown in Fig. 2 lies within the opening in the boiler sheet, and the edge of this flange may be beveled as shown at 17. w
The opening in the boiler sheet (in Fig. 2) is made with a rounded wall forming a seat 18 extending from the inner face of the sheet approximately to the outerface, and on beveled wall forms, with the beveled edge 17 of the flange 16, a groove which is occupied by a weld 20 whereby the structure, when mounted as shown in Fig. 2, is welded to the boiler sheet. Should it be necessary to remove a broken bolt, the mounting may be released by cutting off the flange 16 with the use of a suitable tool or tools.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 3 and 4, 1 represents the outer sheet of a boiler and 2 the inner sheet. A staybolt 3 is secured at its inner end, in any suitable manner, to the inner boiler sheet 2 and said staybolt is provided at its outer end with a head 4P which is connected with the outer boiler sheet 1 as hereinafter explained.
When the device is employed as a flush structure, as shown in Fig. 3, the outer boiler sheet is provided with a conical opening 5 to receive a closure member 6 having a conical exterior. The closure member 6 is hollow and is made in a single piece, its inner end being open and its outer end being closed, and the said outer end presenting a face 7 which lies flush with the outer face of the boiler sheet 1 The peripheral portion of the bearing member is beveled at the outer end of the latter, as at 8 and this beveled portion forms, with a portion of the wall of the opening in the boiler sheet, a groove in which a weld 9 is located,-said weld fixedly uniting the bearing member to the boiler sheet.
The hollow closure member 6 is made interiorly with a threaded wall 10 and receives the threaded exterior of a bearing sleeve 11*, the upper end of the latter abutting against a shoulder 12 in the bearing member and its lower end terminatin at the inner open end of said bearing mem er. A portion of the interior of the bearing sleeve is rounded to provide a seat 13 for the rounded head of the staybolt and the inner portion of the opening'in the bearing sleeve may be made flaring, as at 1 1, to provide for the swing of the staybolt.
. The closure member is made with a concave interior portion 15 to provide a clearance space 16 for the bolt head.
If desired my improved structure may be mounted on the outer face of the boiler sheet 1 and united thereto by a weld 17 ,in which case, the opening 5 in the boiler sheet may be made cylindrical and appreciably greater in diameter than the diameter of the staybolt, as shown in Fig. 4;.
