STAY-BQLT STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 4, 1919.
Application filed May 3, 1918. Serial No. 232,317.
will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures and more particularly to means for effecting rigid connection of the staybolt with a boiler sheet or other member, the object of the invention being to provide simple and efiicient means which will afford ready access to the end of the staybolt for testing purposes.
IVith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claim. I
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view illustrating 'my improvements, and Fig. 2 is a plan view.
1 represents a boiler sheet or member with which the staybolt is to be connected. The boiler sheet 1 is provided with an opening having a threaded wall for the accommodation of a threaded sleeve 2, the latter being provided with a conical inner wall 3, and
said sleeve is provided with an annular extension 4 having inwardly projecting segmental shoulders 5 at its free edge.
The conical inner face 3 of the sleeve 2 constitutes a bearing which is engaged by the conical exterior face 6 of an annular head 7 which is screwed on the end of a staybolt 8,it being understood that the other end of said bolt is secured to another boiler sheet or member not shown. outer end portion of the annular head 7 is made interiorly with an angular configuration 9 to receive a wrench for a purpose hereinafter explained. V
The end of the staybolt is normally cov- The ered by a cap or closure 10 which may have an annular shoulder 11 to seat against the end of the annular head 7 of the staybolt. This cap or closure is provided with lateral lugs or shoulders 12 which, when said cap is turned, will become disposed behind the segmental shoulders 5 of the sleeve 2 and to facilitate the turning of said cap it may be provided with an angular socket 18 to receive a wrench.
By turning the cap 10 until the segmental lugs or shoulders 12 shall have been moved out of line with segmental shoulders 5,'said cap may be at once removed to expose the end of the staybolt. The operator will then insert a wrench into the angular portion 9 of the annular head 7 and attempt to turn the latter. If he is unable to turn said head, this fact will indicate at once that the bolt is Whole, but if he is able to turn it, he can I remove it together with a broken portion of a bolt.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
The combination of a sleeve having its interior wall conical and straight longitudinally of the sleeve, said sleeve having an allnular extension provided with inwardly projecting segmental shoulders, a staybolt, a head provided on said'bolt and having a conical interior face conforming to the conical interior of said sleeve, said head adapted for the reception of a wrench, a removable cap enterin the sleeve extension over the end of the b0 t and engaging said head, and outwardly projecting segmental lugs or shoulders on said cap adapted to engage behind the inwardly projecting segmental shoulders on said sleeve extension.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification inthe presence of two subscrib- S. G. NOTTINGHAM, R. S. FERGUSON.
