CAP FOR FLEXIFLE STAY-BOLTS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN E. D. STAF- FonD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caps for Flexible Stay-Bolts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and. exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tov make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in caps for flexible stay bolts.
The flexible stay bolts in common use consist of an externally threaded sleeve adapted to be screwed into the outer plate of a boiler, a bolt having a rounded head mounted within the sleeve, and a cap for closing the outer end of the sleeve, the cap being hexagonal at a point intermediate its ends for the engagement of a wrench, this hexagonal part being of greater diameter than any other part of the cap, hence when used on boilers having an insulating covering or lagging, it is necessary to so apply the lagging as to leave sufiicient space around the cap to permit the wrench to be applied to the latter, and when the stay bolts are numerous as is the case in locomotive and also in many vertical stationary boilers, a comparatively large part of the boiler is left uncovered.
The object of my invention is to so construct the cap that it may be entered in an opening in the lagging no larger than the cap itself, so that no parts of the boiler, other than the ends of the caps of the stay bolts need be exposed or unprotected by lagging.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in section of a part of a covered boiler, showing a stay bolt sleeve and cap in elevation; Fig. 2 is a view in end elevation of the cap and Fig. 3 is a view in section of the same.

bolt sleeve threaded externally to engage the threaded hole in the plate 1, and also threaded at its upper end externally to engage internal threads 4 in the open end of the cap. This cap is cylindrical in shape, and is provided at its outer end with an angular projection 5 to which a wrench is applied in securing the cap to and removing it from its sleeve. The internal threads in the cap are located wholly within the cylindrical part thereof, so that the angular projection 5 is not weakened, and also to permit the said angular projection to be of less diameter than the sleeve to which the cap is secured. This projection 5 being of less diameter than the cap, permits of the application of a socket wrench thereto without having the wrench project beyond the edge of the body of the cap, thus enabling the latter to be inserted within anopening or recess 6 in the lagging 2 no larger than the cap itself, so that when the improvement is applied to a covered boiler no parts of the boiler plates need be exposed. In applying the improvement to a covered boiler it is simply necessary to drill cylindrical holes through the lagging, whereas with the old type of cap saucer shaped recesses were absolutely necessary in order to enable the wrench to engage the sleeve.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a cap for flexible stay bolts consisting of a cylindrical body internally threaded to engage the stay bolt sleeve, and provided with an outer closed end the latter being angular in cross section and of less diameter than the cylindrical portions.
