E'IHAN I. DODDS'J 0F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 FLANNERY BOLT COMPANY, 0F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA STAY-BOLT STRUCTURE.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21, 1919.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ETHAN I. DoDDs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay-Bolt Structures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers,-the object of the invention being to provide a simple and eiiicient closure for the bearing sleeve, and to so construct said closure and connect the same with the bearing sleeve in such manner that it may be quickly removed to expose the bolt head and facilitate testing of thel bolt.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a staybolt structure embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Figs. 3 and 4 are plan views.
1 represents a bearing sleeve provided internally with a curved face 2 which serves as a bearing for the rounded or spherical head 3 of a staybolt 4.-.
The bearing sleeve is threaded externally to screw through a hole in the boiler sheet and also to receive at its free end, a cap locking member 5.
is then turned, the lugs will enter under said lips or flanges,-the turning of the cap being limited by the engagement of the stops 9 with one end of each of said lips or flanges. By now turning the locking member slightly, the cap will be forced down tightly against its seat on the end of the bearing sleeve and the lugs 8 willbe caused to bindI against the lips or flanges l1.
It is apparent that by turning the locking member slightly in the reverse direction, the
cap may be turned to bring lugs 8 in line' with the spaces between the ends of the lips or flanges 11, when the cap be removed to expose the head of the bolt for testing the latter. These operations may be qulckly performed and the cap can be as quickly replaced and locked.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
l. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve, and a removable cap to seat on the same, said cap having lateral lugs, of an annular locking member threaded on the bearing sleeve and having inwardly projecting lips to receive said lugs behind them, and stops on said cap to engage said lugs.
`Q. I na staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve, of a removable cap seated thereon and having a part to receive a wrench, said cap also having lateral lugs,
of a locking member threaded on said bearing sleeve and having inwardly projecting spaced lips to receive said lugs behind them.
3. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve, of a removable cap seated thereon and provided with a. part to receive e Wrench, said cap having lateral lugs, a locking member threaded on said sleeve and adapted for the reception of a Wrench, said locking member-having in- Wardly projeet-inglps to receive' saidflugjs behind them, and stops on said cap to engage end portions of said lips In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib.
