Description

1. R. FLANNERY & E. DODDS. STAY BOLT STRUCTURE. APPLICATION HLED MAY 3. 191a.
Patented Mar. 4,1919.
I/INESSES JNVEAITORS To all whom it may concern:
Be it known, that we, JOHN R. FLANNERY and ETHAN I. Donus, States, and residents of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay-Bolt Structures; and We do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures and more particularly to means for closing the end of the bearing of the head of the staybolt,- the invention being to provide simple means whereby a closure may be secured in place over the head of the bolt and to so construct said closure and its fastening means that the same may be quickly removed and as quickly replaced in facilitating examination of the staybolt for testing purposes.
With this and other ob3ects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view showing an embodiment of our invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a separate view of the cap or closure.
1 represents abearing sleeve adapted for connection with a boiler sheet and having therein a curved face 2 constituting a bearing for the head 3 of a staybolt 4. The bearing sleeve 1 is provided with an annular flange or extension 5, within which a seat 6 is provided for the edge of a cap or closure 7. This ca or closure is made with a concavity to provide for a portion of the head of the bolt and to form a suitable clearance 8 for said head,-said head being made of rounded or spherical form.
The'annular extension 5 is provided interiorly near its free edge with segmental shoulders 9 and a head or looking member 10 is disposed over'said annular extension and provided with a flange 11 which enters the latter and is formed with lateral lugs 12 adapted to enga e behind the segmental shoulders 9 when t e parts are in locking position and at ens end of each of said Specification of Letters Patent. application filed May 3, 1918. Serial No. 232,304.
lugs, a shoulder 13 is formed to citizens of the United the object of Patented Mar. 4, 1919.
g engage end portions of the shoulders 9 and limit the tu-rning movement of the head 10. The head 10 overlies the end of the bearing sleeve extension 5 and is provided interiorly with cams 14: to coiiperate with cams 15 upon the cap or closure 7 so that when the head 10 .is turned, the cap or closure will be pressed against its seat 6 and the bearing sleeve. The cap 7 is provided near its hearing edge with segmental shoulders or lugs 16 and the bearing sleeve extension is provided with segmental shoulders 17 so that when the head 10 is turned, the cap 7 will also be turned somewhat so as to cause the lugs or shoulders 16 to become disposed behind the shoulders 17 and if desired said lugs 16 may be provided with shoulders similar to the shoulders 13 so as to limit the turning movement of said cap.
ith our improvements the cap or closure will be normally clamped tightly to its seat on the bearing sleeve and it is apparent that by a slight turning of the parts the cap and its locking means will be released and may be quickly removed to permit access to the head of the bolt for testing purposes.
Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. In a staybolt structure, with a bearing member for a staybolt, said bearing member having an annular extension provided interiorly with two sets of segmental shoulders disposed in difi'erent planes, of a ca or closure adapted to seat against the bearing member and having lugs to engage behind one of said sets of segmental shoulders, and a. head having a part to enter said annular extension and having lugs to engage behind the other set of segmental shoulders in said annular extension.
2. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing member for a. staybolt and having an annular flange or extension provided interiorly with two sets of annular shoulders disposed in different planes, of a head having a part entering said annular extension and provided with lugs to engage behind one set of segmental shoulders, a cap or closure seated on the bearing member and entering said head, said cap or closure having lugs to engage behind the other set of segmental shoulders, and cams between said cap or closure and the head.
the combination 3. In astztyb'olt structure, the Combination shdulders, and step ine tne for limiting the with a bearing member of a stafyholt, aid' tmning movement of said parts. p
