STAY-BOLT STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4., 1919.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ETHAN I. Donne, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay-Bolt Structures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This inventionrelates to improvements in staybolt structures and more particularly to means for effecting the closure of the outer end of the bearing sleeve,-the object of the invention being to prow'de simple and eflicient means whereby the cap or closure of the bearing sleeve may befquickl removed therefrom to expose the head 0 the staybolt for testing purposes and to so construct the closure devices that the cap shall be normally held firmly to its seat and prevented from accidental displacement.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section view of a staybolt structure showin an embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 1s a side elevation, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 33 of I represents a bearing sleeve having an interior curved face 2 forming a bearing for the head 3 of the staybolt 4. The bearing sleeve 1 is provided at its outer end with a flange 5 which is recessed to form segmental shoulders 6 and within the confines of the flange 5, the bearing sleeve is provided with a seat 7 for the edge portion of a cap or closure 8. This cap or closure is made with a concavity having such dimensions and configuration as to provide a clearance space 9 for the head of the staybolt.
A hollow head or carrier 10 incloses the cap 8 and is provided at its free edge with segmental shoulders 11 to be disposed behind the segmental shoulders 6 on the bearing sleeve. V
The head or carrier 10 is made of resilient metal and adjacent to the juncture of the end portion 12 of said head with the annular portion 13 thereof, the metal is bent somewhat as shown at 14 for a purpose hereinafter explained.
The end 12 of the head is provided centrally with a hole 15 through which a nipple 16 on the cap 8 projects loosely and this nipple is recessed forming a flange 17 which is flared so as to prevent separation of the head from the cap and yet permit the latter 0 gave some movement relatively to the The end portion 12 of the head is provided with cams 18 on its inner face and the cap is provided with cams 19 to codperate with the cams in the head so that when said head is turned to bring the shoulders 11 behind the shoulders 6,the action of the cams 1819 will be to press the cap tightly against its seat and the shoulders 11 tightly against the shoulders 6 and the resilience of the end portion 12 of the head will augment the binding of the cap to its seat and the shoulders 11 against the shoulders 6. The bearing sleeve 1 is provided with extensions 20 on the flanges 5 and between these extensions recesses 21 are formed into which lugs 22 on the cap project,-the engagement of said lugs with the extensions 20 of the flange 21 serving to limit the turning movement of the closure devices.
From the above it will be seen that when the parts are in position on the bearing sleeve the cap or closure will be firmly locked in place and that by a slight movement of the head, the cap will be unlocked and may be quickly removed to expose the head of the bolt for testing purposes.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve provided with segmental shoulders and a cap to seat againstthe bearing sleeve and provided with a cam portion, of a head inclosing the cap and having a resilient outer portion provided on its inner face with a cam portion to cooperate with the cam portion on the cap, and the peripheral portion of said head having segmental shoulders to cooperate with the segmental shoulders on the sleeve.
