[N VEN T OR certain new and Stay-Bolt Structures; and I do hereby de-' curved interior surface 2 UNITED STATES PATENT rrio ETHAN I. DODDS, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 FLANNERY BOLT COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
STAY-BOLT STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4:, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ETHAN I. Donos, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented useful Improvements in clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers, and more particularly removable closure devices for the bearing sleeve, objects of the invention being to provide a construction of this character which will permit the quick removal of the cap or closure and thus give ready access to the head of the bolt for testing the latter, and which will cause the cap to compensate for any irregularities in its bearing face or its seat and eflect its accurate seating to insure a tight closure for the bearing sleeve.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a sectional view of a staybolt structure showin an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 1s a plan view; Fig. 3 is a separate view of the securing member; Fig. 4 is a separate view of the cap carrier, and Fig. 5 is a view of a modification 1 represents a bearing sleeve having a to serve as a bearmg for the rounded or spherical head 3 of a boiler staybolt 4. The sleeve 1 is made with an internal shoulder 5 which serves as a seat for the edge of a dome-shaped cap or closure 6, and said sleeve is provided within its outer end portion with shoulders 7 spaced apart in a manner to provide notches 8.
A carrier 9 is provided for the cap or closure 6. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, this carrier is made in the form of a ring, the under surface of which may conform, approximately to the contour of the cap or closure 6, and the latter is provided on its top with an annular flange 10 passing through the ring or carrier 9 and having its outer edge upset or spun over the edge of the ring as indicated at 11. The external diameter of the annular flange 10 on the cap is sufliciently less than the internal diameter of the ring or carrier to provide for slight play between these parts, as indicated at 12. It will thus be seen that the connection between the cap and carrier is sufliciently loose to permit slight movement of the cap relatively to the carrier to cause said cap to compensate for slight irregularities of the bearing edge of the cap or the seat on which said cap rests.
he ring or carrier 9 may be provided at its outer end with an annular flange 13 and in rear of this flange, the carrier is provided exteriorly with a left-hand screw thread 14 for the reception of an internally threaded locking or securing member 15, the latter being thus made in the form of a collar and it is provided with lateral lugs 16 to engage behind the shoulders 7 in the bearing sleeve when said locking or securing member is turned. The said looking or securing memher is also provided with stops or shoulders 17 to engage the shoulders 7 in the bearing sleeve.
In applying the parts to the bearing sleeve, the cap or closure and its carrier and the locking member will be inserted into the end of the bearing sleeve-the lugs 16 of the locking member passing through the notches 8. These devices will then be turned by the application of a suitable tool in recesses 18 in the cap carrier, so as to cause the lugs 16 of the member 15 to move behind the shoulders 7 in the bearing sleeve and until the stops 1*? engage said shoulders. Further effort to turn the cap carrier will (by reason of engagement of the stop 17 with the shoulders 7 cause the carrier to tend to move inwardly and tightly clamp the cap upon its seat. It is apparent that by a reversal of the above operations, the cap will be loosed and may be quickly removed to permit access to the head of the bolt for testing the latter, and that the closure devices may be as quickly replaced and locked.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 5, the cap carrier is made in the form of a cover 19 having a partly spherical socket 20 in which a partly spherical knob 21 on the cap is loosely mounted. The carrier 19 is made with a groove 22 in which a ring or packing 23 of soft metal is located to prevent separation of the cap from the carrier and the under side of the latter is beveled so as to provide a slight clearance 24 to permit movement of the cap relatively to the carrier.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing member, of a cap for closure therefor, a carrier for said cap or closure, means loosely connecting said cap and carrier whereby universal movement of the cap. with respect to "the carrier will be permitted, and means for locking the carrier to the bearing sleeve.
2. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing member, of a cap or closure therefor, a carrier having an opening, a projection on the cap mounted loosely in said opening in Itheoarr'ier and movable relatively thereto, and means for locking the carrier to the bearing member.
3. In a staybolt structure, "the combination with a bearing sleeve having internal shoulders at its outer end portion, an externally threaded cap-carrier or closure the bearing sleeve, said locking member also having stops to engage said shoulders.
i. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve having internal shoulders at its free end portion, of anexternally threaded cap carrier having an opening therein, a cap or closure having an annular flange passing freely through the opening in the carrier and loosely engaging over the latter at the outer end :ofsaid opening, and ;a looking member threaded on said carrier and having lugs to enter behind the shoulders in the bearing sleeve, said "locking member also having stops "to engage said shoulders.
In testimony whereof, If'have signed this specification in the ,presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ETHAN I. DODDS.
