STAY-BOLT STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jaa-1; 191s.;
Application le'd November 21, 1916.. y Serial No. 132,596.
To all whom it'may concern:
Be it known that we, BENJAMIN E. D. STAFroRD and ETHAN I. DoDs,` citizens of the United States, and residents of vPittsburgh, in the county of'tAllegheny and State ofIennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay Bolt Structures; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, `and exact description of the invention, suchas will enable others skilled in the art 'to which itappertains to make and use the same.
rlfhis invention relatesl to stay bolt vstructures, and more particularly to means to faeilitate the testing of the bolt,-the` object of the invention being to provide', in a, stay bolt structure, simple mechanicalimeans which may be manually. operated `without removing any part ofthe structure, to determine whether the bolt is defective.
IVith this object in View, zthe inventionv consists in certain novel features of construc-V tion and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forthiand pointed out 1in' the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view showing a stay bolt strucf ture embodying our.improvements;.Fi'g. 2 is a plan view of the same; vFig is a-'plan view of the cap; Fig. 4 is a side'view of the rotary .driving or testing member; Fig. 5` is a top plan view of said driving or testing:
member; Fig. 6 is a bottom or inner plan view of said driving or testing member; Fig. 7 is an end view of the bolt head; Fig. 8 is a sectional view showing another form of the invention; Fig. 9 is a plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 8, and Figs. 10, 11, and 12 are views of details of the structure shown in Fig. 8.
1 represents a bearing sleeve threaded externally at 2 to screw into an outer boiler sheen-the outer portion of said sleeve being somewhat enlarged and threaded as at 3 for a purpose hereinafter explained. The sleeve 1 is made interiorly with a curved bearing for the partly spherical head 4 of a stay-bolt 5, and the inner portion 6 of the bore of the sleeve is made flaring to permit lateral play of the bolt. The bolt head is provided with an angular enlargement 7 for a purpose hereinafter explained.
The threaded portion 3 of the sleeve 1 reeeives the interiorly threaded portion ofa cap 8. Between a shoulder 9 within said cap andthe outer end'ofthe sleeve 1, the annular 55 flange 10 of a rotary driving or testing member 1l is disposed, suitable packing 12 being preferably disposedbetween said flange and sleeve. Thev rotary testinghmember. is recessed or made hollow and its bottom wall 13 'which' enters the outer end of the sleeve` 1, is made with an angular opening 14 which j receives the angular enlargement 7 on the bolt `head,--said opening 14 being of such proportions relatively-to' the proportions of' 65 the enlargement 7 y.ias not to interfere with the normal lateral playl of the bolt.
The rotary testing member 11is provided with an outwardly projecting'angular enflarg'ement 15. to receive a wrench. The enlargement 15`0f the rotary testing member is Y inclosed 'and protected -within the outer p ortion of the cap 8', and this portion ofthe capv may be made angular exteriorlyto receive al wrench.
The cap 8 may be so adjusted normally, asv to retain the rotarytestingmember tightly, clamped yin place, but when the bolt is to be v tested, the attendant may lessen the capjS, and'then apply a wrench to the angular enlargement 15 on the testing member and at. tempt toturn the latter. If the memberlll` refuses to turn more than may be necessaryf to take up thepIay between .the ,wallsof the., opening 14 and the angular enlargement 7'"85 on the bolt head, the attendant will know that the bolt is in good condition. If however, the testing member responds freely (or comparatively so) to the turning force applied by the wrench, the attendant will thus be made aware of the fact that the bolt is broken.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 8 to 11, the bearing sleeve 1 is threaded interiorly, as at 16 to receive the 95 external threads of a cap 17 inclosed within said bearing sleeve. rIhis internal cap may rest against a shoulder 18 formed within the bearing sleeve, and said cap is formed with an opening having a beveled wall 19 form- 100 ing a. seat for the beveled peripheral portion of a rotary testing member 20. This testing member is made with an angular socket 21 which receives the angular enlargement 7 on the bolt head 4.
The outer' part of the rotary testing member is made angular as shown at 23 to receive a Wrench. A collar 24 is threaded on the shank 22 and bears on'an annular bead 25 surrounding the seat 19. This collar may be made with slots 26 to receive a WrenchV andythe cap l7 may also be made with Wrenclislots 27. Y .1
We do not claim broadly, in this case, a testing member to engage the bolt and mounted to be turned to test the integrity of the bolt, the same being covered in our copending application Serial N o. 83,146, nor
ldo we claim broadly in this case, the testing vlm emberhaving a part disposed Within the Letters-Patent, is
upies of this patent nu; be obtained for Having fully described our inventionv what We claim as newl and desire to secure by 1. In a stay bolt structure, the combination with a bolt having an angular portion at one end, and a bearingsleeve, of a rotatable testing member supported by the bearing sleeve and having an angular socket to receiveVr the angular end 'portion of the bolt.
' 2. In astay bolt structure, the combination with' a sleeve and a bolt having a bearing therein, said bolt'provided With a pro` jecting angular end portion, ofa rotatable testing member supported by the sleeve and yhaving 'an angular socket to receive the anguiar portion of thev bolt, said socket having slightly greater dimensions than the dimensions of 'said angular projecting portion of the bolt.
3. In a stay bolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve, abolt ha-ving'a' bearingvinsaid sleeve and provided with an angular enlargement and a cap removably attached' to said sleeve, of a rotatable testing member mounted Within the cap and having anangular socket to receive the angular `en.-`
largement o11 the bolt.V i
4. In a 'stay boltv structure, the combination with a bearingsleeve, a bolt mounted therein and having an angular enlargement and a cap removably attached .to said sleeve, of a rotatablev testing member Within said cap and having an angular socket to receive the angular enlargement on the bolt, said l testing member having an langular portion inclosed Within a part of the stay bolt structure. l f
5. In a lstay bolt structure, the combination With a bearing sleeve, a bolt having a bearing in said sleeve and provided with an angular enlargement, 'and a cap removably attached to said sleeve, of a rotatable testing member having an angular socket to receive the angular enlargement on the bolt, and Y also having a peripheral flange disposed be.-
tween the cap and thesleeve, said testing member also having an angular projection inclosed within saidcap.
In testimony whereof, We have signed this specification in the presence oftwo subscribing Witnesses.
