ASSIGNORS TO FLANNERY BOLT Coll/IPA NY, F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
STAY-BOLT srnucrunn.
Application filed May 3, 1918.
To all whomz't may concern: I
Be it known that we, JOHN Rocnns FLAN- NERY and ETHAN I. DoDDs, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay-Bolt Structures; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures and more particularly to means for effecting the closure of the hearing sleeve,-the object of the invention being to so construct the closure devices for the bearing sleeve of a staybolt structure that the same can be quickly removed therefrom to expose the head of the staybolt for testing purposes and so that normally the outer end of the bearing sleeve shall be tightly closed over the head of the staybolt.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a staybolt structure showing an embodiment of our invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse sectional views, and Fig. 5 is a view of a modification.
1 represents a bearing sleeve adapted for connection with a boiler sheet and provided interiorly with a curved face 2 forming a bearing for the head 3 of a staybolt 4.
The bearing sleeve is provided at its outer end with an annular flange 5 having external segmental shoulders 6 and internal segmental shoulders 7. Within the confines of this annular flange a seat 8 is provided for the edge portion of a cap or closure 9, said cap or closure having a concavity of such dimensions and configuration as to provide a clearance space 10 for the head of the staybolt. The said cap or closure is also provided on its peripheral portion and slightly removed from its bearing edge with segmental lugs 11 to underlie the segmental shoulders 7 on the flange 5 when the parts are in their normal position. Stops 12 are provided at one end of each lug 11 to engage Specification of Letters Patent.

one end of each of the shoulders 7 and serve to limit the turning movement of the cap or closure.
A hollow head 13 incloses the cap or closure 9 and its peripheral portion 14 (which is made with an angular exterior configuration to receive a wrench) is provided interiorly with segmental shoulders 15 to underlie the external segmental shoulders 6 on the flange 5. The head 13 is provided with an opening 16 into which a nipple l7 centrally located on the cap or closure projects,-the free edge of said nipple being upset and thus a loose connection is afforded between the cap or closure and the hollow head 13. The inner face of the head 13 is provided with cams 18 to cooperate with cams 19 on the cap or closure so that when said head is turned the cap or closure will be forced tightly against its seat and the segmental shoulders 15 will move behind the segmental shoulders 11, thus securing the head to the bearing sleeve and pressing the cap or closure tightly to its seat.
In order to limit the turning movement of the head, the latter is provided therein with stop lugs or shoulders 20 to engage similar stops or shoulders 21 on the cap or closure. It is apparent that by reversing the operations above described, the cap or closure and head may be quickly removed from the bearing sleeve to expose the head of the staybolt for testing purposes. It is equally clear that the closure devices may be as quickly re placed on and securely affixed to the bearing sleeve.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 5, the flange 5 is displaced by a separate ring or member 22 screwed onto the bearing sleeve to serve the purpose of the flange 5 in the construction shown in Fig. 1, thus enabling the use of our improvements with a bearing sleeve of ordinary construction. This ring 22 is provided with the external shoulders 6 and internal shoulders 7 to cooperate with the shoulders 15 and lugs 11. In the construction shown in Fig. 5 the stop lugs 20 and 21 may be omitted but the stop shoulders 12 will preferably be retained and the connection between the cap or closure and the head afforded by the nipple 17 in the construction shown in Fig. 1 also may be omitted.
Having fully described our invention What We claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a bearing sleeve provided at its outer end With an annularflange or extension having external segmental shoulders and internal segmental shoulders, of a cap or closure to seat against the bearing sleeve and having peripheral lugs to underlie the internal segmental shoulders insaid-flange; a hollow head inclosing the cap or closure and having a peripheral portion encircling the flange or extension of the bearing'sleeve and provided interiorly With segmental shoulders to engage behind the external segmental shoulders on the flange or extension of the bearing sleeve.
2. In: a stay bolt structure, the" combination with abearing sleeve provided with anannular extension on its outer end, said annular extension having external and 1nternal shoulders, a cap or closure to seat against the bearmg sleeve and having peripheral lugs to engagebehind the internal shoulders of said annularextensien', a h'oI- low head ificlosii'i'g'th'e" carp" oncltsfire'and encircling. the annular extension of the sleeve, said head having segmental shoulders to engage behind the segmental shoulders of the annular extension, stop devices for limiting'the turning movement of the cap or closure, stop devices for limiting the turning movement 015 the head; and c'amh Copies of this patent may be obtained tor flvecents each, by-adreuiii': the Gonmliflimerot intents,
