ETHAN I. DODDS, OF PITTSBURGH, PENl l'SYL"-FAN18. ASSIGNOR T0 FLANNERY BOLT COMPANY, OEZPITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
STAYB 0LT STRUCTURE.
Application filed September 10, 1919.
To all whom it may concern .Be it known that I, ETHAN I. Donns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in staybolt Structures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers,-one object of the invention being to provide a bearing sleeve having a universally movable or adjustable mounting in the outer boiler sheet and secured to said sheet and to provide, in such a bearing sleeve, a supplemental member which shall be so constructed and connected with the sleeve that it shall afford a seat for the bolt head and be readily accessible without removal of any part of the structure, for use in testing the staybolt.
ith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a sectional view partly in elevation showing an embodiment of my invention, and
../ is a plan view.
1 represents the outer sheet of a boiler and 2 the inner sheet.
The outer boiler sheet is provided with an opening 3 having a flaring form and a portion of the wall of said opening may be curved or rounded to afford a seat 4: for a bearing sleeve 5. The sleeve 5 passes through the opening 3 in the boiler sheet 1 and is formed with a rounded exterior portion 6 having a universally movable or adjustable mounting on the seat afforded by the wall of said opening. The head 7 at the outer end of a staybolt 8 is located in the sleeve 5 and the inner end of said staybolt may be secured to the inner boiler sheet 2 in any suitable manner.
The outer end portion of the sleeve 5 is threaded interiorly and receives the threaded portion 9 of a supplemental bearing member 10. The inner end portion of the Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented 001:. 5, 19.20.
Serial No. 322,874.
sleeve 5 is curved or rounded interiorly and the inner end portion of the supplemental member 10 is correspondingly curved or rounded to rest on the curved or rounded interior of the sleeve and to provide a curved or rounded seat 11 for the rounded head 7 of the staybolt 8. The supplemental bearing member 10 is made with an annular head 12 (having a hexagonal or outer angularly shaped peripheral portion to receive a wrench), and said head rests on the outer end of the sleeve 5. The annular head 12 is threaded interiorly to receive a plug 13 closin the outer end of the supplemental bearing member and cooperating with head 12 to close the outer end of the bearing sleeve 5.
By mounting the bearing sleeve 5 in the boiler sheet so that it is universally movable, said sleeve may be adjusted to insure accurate alinement of the staybolt with its points of connection with the respective boiler sheets. When the sleeve shall have been properly adjusted, it will be securely united to the outer boiler sheet by means of a weld 14.
By applying a turning force to the head of the supplemental bearing member, the bolt may be tested. Should the member 10 turn, it would tend to pull the staybolt and if the staybolt be broken, a portion of it would be moved with the'membe-r 10 and thus the broken condition of the bolt'would be at once indicated.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having an opening, of a bearing sleeve mounted initially to have universal movement, a supplemental bearing member disposed within said sleeve and having a portion threaded into said sleeve and having a wrench-engaging part and an interior rounded seat, a staybolt having a head mounted on the seat in the supplemental bearing member, and a weld uniting said sleeve to the boiler sheet.
2. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having an opening, of a bearing sleeve having an initial universally movable mounting in said opening and having a rounded inner end, a supplemental bearing -member threaded into said sleeve and having a rounded inner end conforming to the rounded portion of the sleeve and providing a rounded interior seat, said supplemental bearing member having an annular head overlyingthe outer end of the sleeve and having a configurationtoreceive a Wrench, a removable plug entering the r "10 .headed end of the supplemental bearing member, a Weld uniting said sleeve to the boiler sheet, and a stayboltihaving a rounded head mounted on the seat in said supplemental bearing member.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of 'a subscrib-- inn: Witness.
