Description
B. E. n. STAFFORD AND E. I. 0000s.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN E. D. STAFFORD AND ETHAN I. DODDS OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA,
ASSIGNORS TO FLANNERY BOLT COMPANY,
on PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
S-TAYIBOLT STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patgnted N 23, 1920,
Application filed September 10, 1919. Serial No. 322,881.
1 '0 all whom it may concern -Be it known that we, BENJAMIN E. l). STAFFORD and ETHAN I. Donos, citizens" of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staybolt Structures; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to staybolt structures and more particularly to such as employ staybolts which are rigidly secured to the outer boiler sheet as contradistinguished from flexible staybolt structures,-one object of our present invention being to provide a rigid staybolt structure and so connect it with the boiler sheet that accurate alinement of the points of connection of the bolt with the respective boiler sheets shall be insured.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a sectional view illustrating an embodiment of our invention, and Fig. 2 is a view showing the application of our improvements to a boiler sheet from which a threaded member has been removed.
1 represents an outer boiler sheet, which may be the roof sheet of a boiler, and said sheet is provided with a staybolt opening 2, the wall of which is made tapering and may be curved or rounded, to provide a seat 2 for the rounded head 3 at the outer end of a staybolt 4:, and the inner end of said staybolt is secured to the inner boiler sheet 5 in any suitable manner.
The head of the staybolt is made in the form of a sleeve having a rounded exterior contour and is threaded interiorly to engage threads on the end portion of the body of the bolt as indicated at 6. The head or sleeve 3 is provided with a hexagonal or other angular shaped portion 7 to receive a wrench and the bolt is provided with a tell-tale hole 8 which extends inwardly from the outer end of the bolt and may terminate inwardly of the plane of the inner end of the head 3. The outer end of the body of the bolt may be upset over the outer end of the separate head 3 as indicated at 9.
As the head 3 of the bolt is capable of universal movement on its seat in the outer boiler sheet, it will permit the bolt to be brought into accurate alinement with its points of connection with both boiler sheets regardless of difference of angularity of said sheets relatively to each other and when the head 3 shall have become properly adjusted or set, it will be permanently fixed to and united with the outer boiler sheet by a Weld 10.
In Fig. 2 of the drawing, we have shown our improvements applied to a boiler sheet from which a threaded member, such as a threaded bushing or threaded bolt has been removed. Thus the boiler sheet is shown with an opening 11, having a threaded wall. This opening will be reamed out to form a curved seat for the bearing sleeve, and the inner portion of the threaded wall of the opening may be left undisturbed.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having an opening, of a staybolt provided with a head having initial universally movable mounting in said opening, and means rigidly securing said head to the boiler sheet.
2. In a staybolt structure, the combina tion with a boiler sheet having an opening. of a staybolt body, a separate head screwed on said staybolt body and having a rounded exterior initially universally movable in the opening in the boiler sheet, and a weld rig idly uniting said head to the boiler sheet.
3. In a staybolt structure the combination with. a boiler sheet having an opening, of a staybolt body having a threaded portion, a sleeve on said threaded portion of the bolt body forming a head having a rounded exterior and having initial universally movable bearing in the opening in the boiler sheet, said bolt body having a tell-tale hole accessible from the outer end of the bolt specification in the presence of a subscribing and extending inwardly beyond the plane Witness. ofdthf, innfir end of the head, said head pro- BENJAMIN E D STAFFORD vi e6 Wit an angular portion to receive a 5 wrench, and a Weld rigidly uniting said head ETHAN DODDS to the boiler sheet. WVitness:
In testimony whereof, We have signed this EDWIN S. RYQE.
