STAY-BOLT STRUCTURE.

and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay Bolt Structures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in staybolt construction, the object being to provide a structure wherein the bearing member for the bolt is initially adjustable in the outer sheet of the boiler, and the bolt longitudinally adjustable in saidbearing member, the bolt being made of two sections connected by a link joint whereby either section of the bolt may be moved to accommodate itself to the movements of the sheet to which it isattached without necessarily moving the other member. lVith this object in view my invention consists in the parts and combinations oi parts as will. be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a view in section showing the bearing member projecting from the outer sheet; Figure 2 is a similar view showing the bean ing member flush with the sheet and Figure 3 is a detached view of the bolt and its adjustable collar.
5 represents the outer sheet of a boiler provided with a bolt opening 6, the outer edge of the wall of which may be cut away in the segment of a circle, as shown in Figure 1 to receive the similarly curved lower end of the bearing member 7 or the bolt opening may be of greater diameter to receive the outer curved end of the bearing member 7 as shown in Figure 2.
In Figure 1 I have shown the outer wall of the bearing member with a conv X or curved inner end, and in Figure 2 I have shown the outer wall formed in the arcs of two circles. one to engage the wall of the bolt opening where a projecting member is used and the other for flush engagement as in Figure 2. In both instances the sleeve or hearing memher is welded to the outer sheet by a weld as at 8 in Figure 1, and 8 in Figure 2.
In both figuresthe bearing member is provided internally with a conical seat 9 on which the conical collar 10 rests and is free to turn and move outwardly. The inner end of this collar preferably projects through the inner end of the; sleeve and is provided at its outer or thicker end with slots 11 for the engagement with a spanner wrench employed for screwing the collar to the outer section 12 of the bolt. This outer section of the bolt has a cylindrical neck threaded to engage the collar 10 and is expanded or widened at its inner end and provided with eye 13 to receive the. cross bar 14 on the looped end 15 or the inner section 16 of the bolt. The eye on section 12, and the looped end of 15 of the section 16 of the bolt, form a link joint which permits the free movement of the inner section 16 of the bolt independently of the outer section. The outer end of section 12 of the bolt is provided with a groove 17 for the engagement of a wrench or other tool employed for securing the section 16 of the bolt to the inner sheet (not shown) of the boiler. It may be screwed to said inner sheet or secured by upsetting in the usual and well known manner. With. this construction the bolt may be passed through the bolt opening in the outer sheet and secured to the inner sheet after which the bearing member is placed and adjusted so that itslong axis will be coincident with the long axis of the bolt.
The sequence in which the parts are applied is immaterial providing the opening through the bearing member be large enough for the passage of the section 12 of the bolt. If however the bolt opening in the bearing member be'smaller than section 12 of the bolt the collar 10 will not be applied until after the bolt has been secured to the inner sheet and the bearing member 7 applied, and adjusted and welded if desired to the outer sheet 5. After the parts have been assembled as disclosed the bolt may be tightened up by turning collar 10 until the latter has a tight lit in the bearing member.
\Vith this construction the bearing member maybe initially adjusted so that its long axis will conform to the long axis of the bolt and any slack may be taken up by adjusting the collar 10 on the seat 9. After the parts have been adjusted the two sections of the flexible bolt will be free to flex or move in- I dependently of each other and the outer section free to move in the bearing member 7.

In a stay bolt structure, the combina tion of the outer; sheet of a boiler having a bolt opening therein, a bearing member initially adjustable in and permanently secured Within said'bolt opening, a two part bolt, the two parts thereof being connected bye link joint, a threaded collar adj ustably secured to the outer end of the outer mem= ber of saidbolt and supported 011 a seat in said bearing member and a cap closing the outer end of the latter.
