Description

" J. R. FLANNERY ET AL STAY BOLT STRUCTURE FOR BOILERS Filed Dec. '7, 1920 Patented Sept. 11, 1923.
UNITED STATES PATENT 0mm JOHN ROGERS FLANNERY AND ETH AN I. DODDS, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA,
ASSIGNORS, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO FLANNERY BOLT COMPANY, OF PITTS- BURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE. I
STAY-BOLT STRUCTURE FOR BOILERS.
Application filed December 7, 1920. Serial No. 428,966.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN Roenns FLANNERY and ETHAN I. DODDS, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay-Bolt Structures for Boilers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This inventionv relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers,-one object of the invention being to provide an efficient seat member mounted on the boiler sheet, for a movable bearing ring, which latter aflords a bearing for the rounded head of a staybolt.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a sectional view of a staybolt structure showing an embodiment of our invention, and Figure 2 is a similar view showing a modified construction.
1 represents an outer boiler sheet having an opening 2, for the passage of a staybolt 3, the latter having a rounded head 4 at its outer end and the other end of said bolt may be connected with the inner boiler sheet in any suitable manner.
The bolt opening 2 (at or near its outer end) is enlarged and formed with an annular undercut groove or recess 5 to receive the beaded or enlarged neck 6 of an annular seat member 7 This seat member overlies the outer face of the boiler sheet and is secured rigidly to the latter as above de scribed by swaging.
The opening in the annular seat member aligns with the opening 2 in the boiler sheet for the passage of the staybolt and the upper surface of said seat member is beveled, as at 8, to receive the beveled inner end 9 of a bearing ring 10. The bearing ring is disposed between the seat member 7 and the bolt head 4 and is made with a curved bearing face 11 for the latter.
It will be observed that the bolt head is freely movable on the bearing member and that the latter is freely movable on the seat member carried bv the boiler sheet.
A sleeve 12 is seated on the outer face of the boiler sheet so as to closely surround the peripheral edge of the seat member 7 and is welded to the boiler sheet as indicated at 13, said sleeve having appreciably greater internal diameter than the external diameter of the bearing ring. The sleeve 12 is threaded internally as at 14 to receive a hollow threaded closure 15, between which latter and an annular shoulder 16 within the sleeve, a washer or packing ring 17 is disposed. The closure may be provided with an angular head 18 to receive a tion with a boiler sheet having a bolt opening, and a staybolt having a rounded head, of an annular threadless seat member mounted directly on the boiler sheet and rigidly secured thereto, a'movable bearing ring for the bolt head disposed between the latter and the seat member, and means secured to the boiler sheet for enclosing the bolt head, bearing ring and seat member.
2. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having a bolt opening, and a staybolt having a rounded head,
of an annular threadless seat member mounted directly on the boiler sheet and having a neck portion entering the boiler sheet around the bolt opening and rigidly secured in place, said seat member having a beveled face, a bearing ring having a beveled portion movable on the beveled face specification in the presence of a subscribing of the seat member, said bearing ring also Witness.
having a rounded portion on which the bolt JOHN ROGERS FLANNWRY head is movable, and means secured to the ETHAN I DODDS u 5 boiler sheet and enclosing the bolt head,
bearing ring and seat member. Witness:
In testimony whereof, WGKhaVQSlgHBd lihlS-Z EDWIN- Sl RYOE.
