F. M. VANSICKLE.
SANITARY SEAT COVER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 23. 1921 1,396,480. Patented Nov. 8, 1921.
ff: v g i Wed/Y Vd/zs/ck/e UNITED STATES FRED M. VANSICKLE, OF LEWISTONT, ,IDAHO.
SANITARY SEAT-COVER.
Application filed June 23,
To ([77 w/mm it may concern Be it known that I. F mm M. YAxsionLn, a citizen of the l'nited States. residing at Lewiston. in Nev. lerce county and State of Idaho. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Seat-Covers. of which the following is a specification.
v present invention relates to improvements in sanitary seat covers designed for use in connection with the seat of a toilet howl. and temporarily attached to or carried hv the lid of the seat in position where it is readily accessihle when desired. The primary ohject of the invention is the provision of means in connection with the lid of the seat for receiving and retaining a pad. or layers of sheets. which may he successively detached from the pad when desired for use. thus providing sanitary seat covers for individual use, which may he thrown awav after using. By the utilization of my invention the user of'the toilet may secure from the receptacle on the under side of the lid, the necessary seat cover or sheet. thus insuring an individual cover. and means are provided for retaining the remaining sheets or layers of the pad for suhsequent use.
The invention consists in certain novel comhinations and arrangements of parts involving the seat and its lid, the pad of covers. and retaining means therefor on the underside of-the lid. as will he hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical emhodiment of my invention wherein the parts are combined and arranged according to the hest mode I have thus far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.
Figure l is a perspective view of a toilet fixture including the seat and seat cover of a standard form of how]. having the device of my invention comhined therewith for use.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the seat covers separated from a pad which is carried by the seat lid at its under side.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal. vertical sectional view through a toilet fixture illustrating the relation of the howl. seat, lid and the packet of covers carried by the lid.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the retaining posts or stems attached to the seat lid for holding the sheets of the pad in place.
Specification of Letters Patent.
as when the lid is closed as in Fig. 3.
Patented Nov. 8, 1921.
1921. Serial No. 479,717.
In the preferred form of the invention as shown in the drawings I have illustrated a toilet seat 1 of usual type having the lid 2 hinged thereto at 3, and these members, which are of usual or standard type are pivoted or hinged as usual at the back, top edge of the toilet howl 4.
The cover or lid 2 of the seat is usually of wood. hut may he of other material. and is a Hat. imperforate hoard. which hv means of the bracket arms 3' of the hinge is elevatcd somewhat ahove the seat when these two memhers are brought into parallelism This elevation of the lid 2 permits the attachment thereof of a casing of meta]. comprising a pair of flanges 5 and (i which are attached to the under side of the lid :2 hy means of the hase plate 7 and screws or pins 8. The two walls or flanges 5 and (3 thus form an open annular space 9 which conforms to the outline of the seat 1, and the outer wall or flange 5 of this annular pocket or space conforms to the periphery of the lid 2. The flanges or walls 5 and (3 of the casing are of a width to permit their free edges. as in Fig. 3, to depend respectively over the outer peripheral edge of the seat and over the edge of the central opening in the seat, thus forming a neat fitting closure over the seat of the bowl.
ithin the annular pocket of the casing is deposited and carried a pad'of sheets 10. which as seen in Fig. 2 are stamped from suitable material, as paper, with an open center conforming to the opening in the seat 1 and a peripheral outline or outer edge conforming to the outer edge of the seat l. This pad may he perforated at desired points. as indicated at 11. and the perforated pad is packed in the pocket 9 by slipping the pad over spring or resilient posts 12 of the casing. In Fig. 4 it will he seen that each of these posts or retaining devices for the pad comprises a single piece of flat metal as steel or sheet iron bent to form the resilient spaced arms 13, 13 and at the ends of these arms are attaching flanges l; perforated for attachment as by screws to the seat lid. These spring posts are spaced at intervals about the pocket 9, and the position of the posts ofcourse corresponds with the location of the perforations 11 in the pad 10, in order that the latter may he pushed into position over the resilient posts and there retained. K
The leaves or sheets of the pad are compacted and the outermost sheet rests upon the seat 1 as in Fig. 3 Where it will be seen that the face of the pad corresponds to the rounded face of the seat 1, thus insuring a correct position of the lid over the seat when closed. When the the single sheets, or the uppermost sheet of the pad may be withdrawn therefrom by grasping the sheet or cover between the two notches and 16 of the casing walls, and
. pulling the sheet from the pad. These notches are of sufiicient depth to permit grasping of the sheet at various depths, and the notches may 7 of the pocket, in order that the last sheets of the pad may be extracted.
In this manner it will be obvious that I provide a convenient, compactly arranged, device of this character in which the sheets or covers are readily accessible when desired and from which the sheets may be withdrawn with facility. The weight of the lid and pad tends to form the outermost sheet or layer with a concave curvature as in Fig.
2, as it is pressed on lid is lifted as in Fig. 1'
be extended to the base plate the seat, and when the outermost sheet is withdrawn it is thus shaped for ready positioning on the seat where it will remain for use, and may be thrown away after use.
Havingthus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent ish 1. The comb'nation in a device as described with a seat, of a lid hinged thereto and elevated above said seat, an open pocket fixed to said lid and comprising a pair of spaced walls and leaves in saidpocket adapted to rest on said seat when the lid is closed, and means for temporarily retaining said leaves in the pocket. I i I 2.The combination in a device as described with a seat and hinged lid, of an open pocket comprising a pair of spaced walls having base plate, a padof loose complementary notches and a base plate fixed to said lid, spring posts in said pocket, and a perforated pad of loose leaves temporarily retained in said pocket on the posts.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
FRED M. VANSICKLE.
