Application niet september 2l, 1925. Serial No. 57,580.
To all whom 'it may confier/n Be it known that I, @susan-Maser, a citizen of the United States, residing at lci-v legg, in Shoshone County and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Sanitary Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improveA ments in sanitary mattresses for use with invalid beds` as in hospitals and similar places.
rlhe primary object of the invention is the provision of a bed mattress `filled or stuffed with suitable material for customary use and provided with means .vhereby the mattress may with facility be converted for sanitary uses by the invalid. Means are provided for suspending a receptacle in an opening through the mattress and the mattress is equipped with a reinforcement surrounding the opening for the purpose of preventing' sagging of the mattress and for maintaining the mattress in properposition for comfort to the patient.
The invention consists essentially in a mattress having' an opening therethrough bounded by a reinforcing grommet in which a receptacle is suspended, and a bed sheet from which the receptacle is supported, together with other features as will hereinafter be more specifically pointed out and claimed. In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete exam-ple of the physical embodiment of my invention wherein the parts are combined and arranged according to the best mode I have thus far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.
Figure l is a perspective view showing a bed equipped with the mattress of my invention. Y
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view of a portion of the mattress showingV a receptacle suspended therein, and Figure 3 is a similar view taken at right angles to the plane of Fig. 2.
In order that the general arrangement and relation of .parts may readily be understood I have indicated in Figure l a bed B of usual construction equipped with the mattress indicated as a whole by the letter M. The mattress may be of suitable or approved type and is filled or stuffed with appropriate filling material as 1.
At a suitable point of location in the mattress' it is provided with an opening extending from its upper surfat i through the lowersurface and this opening is bounded by a grommet 2 fashioned in suitable shape and provided with upper and lower flanges 3 and e'. These flanges are permanently `secured in suitable manner at the top and bottom faces of the mattress, and the grommet, V
which is preferably of rubber, .is of sufficient thickness to form a semi-rigid retaining wall around the opening and form a binding therefor. Iy the use of the permanent grommet the mattress is strengthened or reinforced about the opening therein in order that this portion of the mattress may be maintained in the'same uniform thickness and shape as the remaining portion of the mattress.
Within this grommet a receptacle 5 is adapted to be suspended and the receptacle which may be fashioned of rubber or similar sanitary material, is fashioned with a top flange 6 that is adapted to be cemented, vulcanized, or sealed in other suitable manner to the under surface of a` sanitary, rubber sheet 7 that is `adapted to lic upon the top surface of the mattress. rIhe receptacle, which is permanently attached to the rubber sheet, and the sheet are removable from the mattressand the receptacle as shown7 is of a size as to permit withdrawal through the grommet, when it is necessary or desirable to change the sheet.
The sheet is provided with a suitabe numM ber of perforations 8 and this perforated portion of the sheet forms a top closure for the receptacle, for drainage into vthe receptacle.
The receptacle is provided withv an open bottom, but a removable closure is provided by means of which the open bottom may be sealed up in order that solids or liquids may be retained therein'. In some instances the closure may be dispensed with.
For co-action with the closure the open bottom of the receptacle is equipped with a pair of parallel retaining bars 9 `and l0 that are secured in casings or the hemmed edges of the receptacle bottom.
. The closure comprises a removable resilient or spring clip having a lpair of spring `jaws ll and 12 to form ay groove that maybe slipped over one end of the two retaining bars and then slipped along these bars to their opposite ends, thereby1 retaining the bars and the open bottom of the receptacle to forni a sealed closure. v
A handle 13 may be provided on the closure clip for facility in manipulating it in applying or withdrawing the clip to or from the bottoni of the receptacle. As before stated the closure may be omitted and a vessel muy be placed beneath the open lower end of the receptacle for the reception of anything,` passing through the receptacle lVheu necessaryT the parte may be removed.l
. separated, and cleansed, with facility and then replaced with convenience, thus providing a devize of this character which is ellicient in the performance of its functions and maj;v be utilized `with and manipulated with coi'ivenience.
Having thus fullj)7 described my invention what l claiin as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isrlhe combination with a mattress having; an opening therethrough and a groinniet in the opening, of'a removable sheet, a receptacle in the opening` having` an'open top and bottoni and adapted for Withdrawal from said opening, an upper exterior tlanfre en the receptacle secured at the underside of the sheet and adapted to rest upon tire wenns-iet, said sheet having' arperforated portion forniing a top-closure for the receptacle, and a removable closure for thevbettonr of the receptacle.
In testinionjvv whereof l aii in); si gnature.
