Application filed July 15, 1908. Serial No. 443,641.
bed pan, and which can be used by the pa-.
tient without inconvenience and without the discomfort connected with the use of a bed pan.
The novel features of myinvention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrative of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the manner of attaching the bed pad to the patient. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the bed pad detached and disposed in a horizontal position. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View on the dotted line a-b of Fig. 2. 4 is a vertical sectional view on the dotted line c-0Z of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of the end of the drainage tube to which is attached the removable closure.
Similar characters of reference denote similar parts.
' an interiorly embrace the trunk and legs of a person, as
shown in Fig. 1.
The body 1 with its inflatable border portion 2 forms a receptacle for refuse matter which can pass therefrom by a flexible drainage tube 5 which has one end connected to the bed pad at a point intermediate the portions which embrace the legs of the patient. The other end of the drainage tube 5 is provided with a removable closure 6, preferably a screw threaded plug fitted to threaded tube 7 secured to the inner side of. the tube Ereferably the outer end of the closure 6 is provided with an eye 8 by which, when not 1n use, the bed pad maybe suspended in an inverted position.
Opposite side edges of the flap 4 have attached to them securing straps 9 having perforations 10 adapted to receive buttons 11 mounted upon similar straps 12 secured to opposite side edges of the body 1. The body portion 1 is also provided adjacent the end opposite that having the flap 4 with securing straps 13 having holes 14 for receiving buttons 15 mounted on straps 16 secured to the body portion 1 at the side edge opposite'that to which are secured the straps 13.
In using myinvention, the body portion 1 is placed beneath the patients trunk, as shown in Fig. 1, the straps 18 being secured to the straps 16, as shown. The flap 4: is then passed upwardly between the legs of the patient and is disposed with portions covering the lower part of the patients trunk and with portions embracing the legs, the flap straps 9 being secured to the straps. 12. The tubular border portion is then inflated after the manner of inflating the tube of a bicycle. The drainage tube 5 is then passed beneath the upper covering and over the foot of the bed, the discharge end being vertically disposed. If desired the closure 6 may be removed and the discharge end of the tube 5 disposed so as .to discharge into a suitable vessel, not shown. Or the closure 6 may remain in the drainage tube until such time as it'may be convenient to remove the pad from the bed. The tube should have sufiicient capacity to contain the refuse mat- .ter discharged into it, in case it is designed to employ the pad without the use of a separate receiving vessel.
By reason of the flexible nature of the bed pad, the patient is not subjected tothe discomfort which is unavoidably connected with the use of a bed pan of the ordinary type. In such'use the patient must be raised to an unnatural and uncomfortable position, while with the use of my improved bed pad,- the patient may lie in a perfectly natural position. The raisedjborder 2 prevents any liquid substance passing from the body portion 1 to the bed covering.-
Preferably the central portion of the body adjacent the flap 4 is provided with a reinforcing layer 17. This layer, however, may be dispensed with.
materialimpervious to water and having at one end an arcuate notch, a flap joined to the body the full extent of the notch and adapted to extend above and at each side of the notch to embrace the abdomen and legs of a person, the body having portions extending laterally from each side of the notch and which cooperate with the flap to embrace the legs of the person below the apex of the notch.
2. A bed pad comprising a body of flexible material impervious to water and having at one end an arcuate notch, a flap joined to the body the full extent of the notch and adapted to extend above and at each side of the notch to embrace the" abdomen and legs of a person, the body having portions extending laterally from each side of the notch and which cooperate with the flap to embrace the legs of the person below the apex of .the notch, the body and flap having an inflatable portion which extends along the upper, side and lower edges of the body and along the lower edges of the portions of the flap which encircle the legs, releasable means for securing together opposing portions of the body and flap where they embrace the legs, and a drainage tube which connects to the body at 1 the apex-0f the arch.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
