GARMENT-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1, 1921.
Application filed March 12, 1921. Serial No. 451,892.
To all 'u; from it may concern:
Be it known that I, HELEN Mnszanos,
citizen of Hungary, and resldent of Melxeesport, 1n the county" of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Garment Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to garment hangers, having particular reference to the provision of novel means for support ing trousers, skirts, or such garments.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel hanger which will act to hold the garment in a properly stretched condition, and prevent the formation of wrinkles therein while suspended in the hanger.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a face view of a garment hanger embodying the invention showing the skirt suspended therefrom.
Fig. 2 is a side edge view of the device as shown in Fig, 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged top edge view.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section on the line M of Fig. 3, illustrating particularly the means for locking the two clamp arms of the hanger together.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary side edge view, on a larger scale than Fig. 2 and looking in the same direction, but showing the clamp arms thrown outwardly.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary face view, on a larger scale, than Fig. 1, showing particularly the connection of the clamp arms to the yoke bar.
As here shown my improved garment hanger comprises a curved yoke bar 10, having hook 11 midway between its ends for suspension purposes, no novelty belng claimed for this yoke bar taken by itself, the present invention relating to the means for securing a skirt or like garment to said yoke bar.
This improved means for securing the garment in place comprises a pair of clamp arms 12 which are formed of flat metal straps, these clamp arms being hinged at one end to one end of the yoke bar 10. For
hingedly attaching the arms 12 to the yoke bar 10 I secure to the latter a hinged element 1%, this hinge element having its axis in the median line or plane of the yoke bar 10 and being formed with an integral laterally offset plate member 15 which projects across the face of the yoke bar and is secured thereto by screws 16.
Formed on the adjacent ends of the arms 12 are the inter-engaging pairs of hinge eyes 17 one of which, indicated specifically at 17 is upwardly offset so as to project across the top of the fixed hinge element 14;. By this means both arms are suspended from the hinge element 14:. The usual hinge pintle 20 passes through the hinge element '14; and the hinge eyes 17, the latter being laterally offset from the main lengths of the arms (which latter are arranged to lie in close contact with the faces of the yoke bar at the ends thereof) to bring them in axial alinement in the median line or plane of the yoke bar. The arms are arranged below the hinge element 14 as shown, and the extreme end of the yoke bar 10 extends vertically downward as at 10 between said arms, the opposite end of the yoke bar being also similarly arranged.
The free ends of the arms 12 project beyond the adjacent end of the yoke bar 10 as at 12, these end portions being inwardly ofiset toward one another. To secure these ends together I provide one of them with a fixed projecting stud 25 which projects through a suitable aperture in an enlarged head 26 on the other one. This stud 25 has a series of notches 27 spaced therealong, adapted to be individually engaged by a pin 28 slidable in the head 26, this pin having a recess 29 in one side which is normally held out of registry with the stud 25 by a spring 80. The engagement of pin 28 in the selected one of the notches 27 will lock the two arms 12 together, while the arms can be released by pressing inward on the pin 28, against spring 30, until the recess 29 is in registry with the stud 25, which can then be withdrawn from the head 26.
In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings I have indicated a ladys skirt in position on the hanger, the reference numeral 35 designating the skirt. In the application of the skirt the arms 12 areswung back, the waist band of the skirt is then engaged over the vertical ends 10 of the yoke bar 10, and
the arms 12 are swung inward and locked. The skirt will thus be held in properly stretched position and chance of wrinkles forming while it is suspended in the hanger is obviated.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Let ters Patent of the United States is as follows:
A garment hanger adapted for suspending ladies skirts therefrom comprising a curved yoke bar having vertical depending extensions at its ends adapted to project into the waist of the skirt, a hinge element fixed to one end of said yoke bar, the attaching point of said hinge element being entirely above the adjacent vertical extension, a pair of clamp arms hinged at one end on said hinge element below the latter and adapted to project across said extensions on opposite faces thereof and clamp upon the waist of the garment, and means for releasably securing the free ends of said clamp bars together.
Signed at McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, this 8th day of March A. D. 1921.
