CLOTHES HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 4:, 1922.
Application filed August .25, 1921. Serial No. 495,379.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK C. NELSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Clarksburg, in the county of Harrison and State of hVest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes Hangers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact. description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in clothes hangers, having for an object to provide a clothes hanger which may be advantageously used for supporting a variety of articles of wearing apparel in such a position as will prevent wrinkling of the same as by crowding, or injury thereto by the mode of supporting or hanging the same.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a hanger of the character mentioned in which a number of parts are few, the con struction simple, the cost of production small and which will be particularly useful for supporting articles of wearing apparel in confined or limited space.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
In order that the invention and its mode of operation may be readily understood by persons skilled in the art, I have in the accompanying illustrative drawings and in the detailed following description based thereon set out one embodiment of the same:
In these drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved.
clothes hanger.
Figure 2 is afragmentary detail of a portion thereof showing the form of clasp employed for attaching articles to the support;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary deta l of a slightly modified form of connection be tween the supporting rods and the hangers frame.
Having more particular reference to the drawings in connection with which like characters of reference will designate corresponding parts throughout, myamproved hanger may be stated to comprise a substantially U-shaped heavy wire frame 1, the basal portion of which is twisted and looped intermediate with opposite end to provide an eyelet 2 whereby the hanger frame may be conveniently attached to a nail, hook or other supporting device.
Disposed transversely of the substantially U-shaped hanger frame 1 and arranged in equallydistant relation are a plurality of support ng rods 3, which have their opposite ends oined to the adjacent portion of the opposite side of the U-shaped frame as by soldering the same thereto or by connecting them thereto in any other suitable way well known in the art. generally indicated by the numeral 4: are engaged with the various supporting rods 3, preferably two of these olasps 4.- being arranged upon each of said rods and affordmg means for effectually connecting articles of wearing apparel to be supported upon the hanger to the various rods 3.
f course, if desired, other forms of clasps or connecting devices than those herein indicated by the numeral 4, may be substituted, such as conditions or preference may dictate.
Another pair of these clasps 4 are arranged upon the opposite portions of the basal portion of the U-shaped hanger l as is clearly shown in the Figure 1, thus afford ing additionalgarment supporting means for the hanger.
When arranging the pivoted clasps upon the supporting rods 3 and the basal portion of the hanger l, I preferably place the same in stagger relation, that is, the pair of clasps upon the supporting rod 3 directly below the basal portion 1 of the U-shaped frame are arranged slightly inwardly of said basal portion or at a less distance apart, while the clasps 4 upon the supporting rod 3 directly below the first mentioned supporting rod are arranged slightly upwardly of its respective clasps or at a slightly greater dis tance apart. Likewise, the clasps 4 arranged upon the remaining two supporting rods 3 are arranged in staggered relation, that is, at different distances apart. By reason of this arrangement of the elasps 4, it will be understood that the garments to be Pivoted spring clasps, I
supported upon the hanger will be permitted ticularly, with the engagement of a garment between the clasps of such pairs, I may secure stops, indicated at 5 to those portions of the supporting rod 3 directly inwardly of the various clasps 4 and to those portions of the basal portion of the U-shaped frame 1 directly inwardly of its respective clasps 4. Thus, proper positioning as between the various clasps 4 will be at all times insured. Furthermore, by reason of the fact that inward movement of the clasps will be limited by the stops 5, it will be understood that the sagging of the intermediate portions of a garment engaged by the opposed clasps 4 will be prevented, since, the tendency of the clasps 4 to move inwardly with the application of weight thereto will be limited and hence, that portion of a garment engaged by such clasps may be tautly arranged between the same, previous to engagement thereby. Because of this feature, it will be understood that the hanger will be found especially desirable for use in properly hanging dresses of heavy fabriw or dresses of extremely fine or light fabric decorated in accordance with the prevalent fashions, as for example, with embroidery, beading or similar ornamentation, preventing the sagging of those portions of such a garment intermediate of the clasps with the resultant wrinkling of the same.
Instead of soldering the opposite end of the supporting rod to the opposite sides of the U-shaped hanger frame. 1. I may if desirable, bend or slightly kink those portions on the opposite side of frame 1 as at 6 and bend the opposite ends of the supporting rods 3 thereabout as at 7 thus effecting a positive jointure as between the rod and han er frame.
hfanifestly, the construction shown is capable of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of my claim are considered within the spirit of *my rights.
I claim:
A clothes hanger comprising a frame having sides and head portions, attaching means on said head portion, aplurality of relatively parallel rods disposed transversely of said frame and secured at their opposite ends to adjacent 'portions of the frame sides. a plurality of relatively staggered pairs of stops fixedly arranged upon said rods and head portion spaced inwardly from the sides thereof, and clasps pivot-ally and slidably arranged upon those. portions of the rods and head portion capable of having independent lateral adjustment between their respective stops and the frame sides.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
FRANK C. NELSON.
