Description

1927' s. M. WARD. ET AL- GARMENT HANGER Filed May 29. 1925 Patented July 26, 1927..
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SENA MAE WARD AND EUNICE S. SUTTON, OF NEW YOBK, N. Y.
GARMENT HANGER.
Application filed May 29, 1925. Serial No. 33,699.
This invention is an improvement. in hangers, and more particularly in hangers adapted for the support of either mens or womens garments.
In the usual construction of hanger, the
r ever, and especially evening gowns and the like, the hanger is not satisfactory, since the straps or yokes which support the garment tend to slip down the sloping surfaces and to slide off the ends of the hanger. Hence it is usual in hangers intended for supporting ladies garments, and especially garments of the sleeveless and yokeless type, to provide means for engagement by the sleeves or yoke to prevent this slipping movement.
Hangers have been designed, suitable for supporting either type of garment, the hanger being made invertible, having opposite surfaces shaped, one to fit-a sleeved garment, as for instance a coat, and the other a yokeless garment, as for instance an evening gown, and means has been provided in connection with such hangers, in the form of pendants, to support a skirt or a pair of trousers. The hangers are however somewhat complicated, and a primary object of the present invent-ion is the provisions of a simple, cheaply constructed hanger, adapted for any type of garment, and invertible to bring either character of support into operative position, and wherein the positioning of the hanger to bring the sleeved garments supporting surfaces into engaging position, presents a hanger for trousers.
Another object is the provision of a hanger of the invertible type including a trousers hanger for use in one position of the hanger, together with means in connection with the hanger for supporting the same, so arranged with respect thereto that the trousers supporting means is inaccessible except when the hanger is in proper position to support a complementary garment.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts fully described hereinafter, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim appended hereto, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claim, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a art thereof:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of t e improved hanger, in position to support garments having yokes.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the hanger in position to support yokeless garments.
In the present embodiment of the inven tion, the improved hanger consists of a late or bar 1, which may be of any suitable ight material, such for instance as laminated wood, and the o posite side edges of the plate. or bar, indicated at 2 and 3 respectively, are differently contoured.
The one edge 2 is contoured to fit within and support garments with yokes, such for instance as mens coats. Thesaid edge is formed by cutting away the plate toward each end from the center, on a slope as shown. The opposite side edge 3 is contoured to support yokeless garments, the said edge being concaved toward the ends of the plate or bar, as shown, thus to provide upstanding portions 4 at each end, to prevent the straps 5 of a yokeless garment 6, from slipping over the ends, thus to displace the garment. The ends of the plateor bar are rounded as shown, the edges 2 and 3 merging one into the other, and the entire edge of the plate is also rounded transversely, to form a smooth uniform surace.
A hook member 7 is pivoted to the bar, intermediate the ends thereof, as indicated at 8, and between the side edges 2 and 3, the pivotal connection being made in any suitable or desired manner. This hook member is adapted to swing toward either edge of the late or bar, with the hook thereof extending beyond the said edge, so that the plate or bar maybe suspended either in the position of Fig. 1 or that of Fi 2.
Means is provided for holding the said member in either position, in the form of pairs of bosses or studs 9, a pair being arranged near each side edge 2 and 3. The members of the pairs are spaced apart, to
receive the shank of the hook member. The studs are rounded, so that the shank may be readily slipped over one, to engage or disengage the shank. There is enough resiliency in the shank to permit engagement and disengagement, but the plate or bar will be held transverse to the shank, regardless of the weight of the garments thereon, which however are balanced with respect to the shank.
The plate or bar is longitudinally slotted, as indicated at 10, between the side edges 2 and 3, and between the side edge 3 and the pivotal connection. This slot extends from near one end of the plate or bar to near the other, and it is of a width to receive the legs of a pair of trousers, thereby to support the trousers over the portion of the plate or bar between the slot and the side edge 3. It will be noticed that the pivotal connection of the hook member, being between the side edge 2 and the slot will expose the full length of the slot when the parts are in the position of Fig. 1. k
The said connection also prevents insertion of trousers through the slot when the yokeless garment supporting side is up.
That is the hook is so connected to the hang- A garment hanger having one edge contoured. to fit within and hold in shape a yoke garment, and the opposite edge contoured to support a yokeless garment, and having between said edges a longitudinally extending.
slot to support a pair of trousers, and a hook having a shank pivoted to the hanger and adapted to extend transversely thereof beyond either of the said edges tosupport the said plate with either of the edges at the top, the hook pivoted to the han er between the slot and the first named e ge so that when the last named edge is uppermost the hook shank will extend across the slot to prevent the insertion of trousers in the slot, thus serving as an indication of the proper arrangement of the hanger for. yoke .garments.
