R. FREEDMAN GARMENT HANGER Sept. 11, 1934.
Filed Dec. 5, 1931 vmw ' |}\lVENTOR W ZZZ Q WW/ BY ATTORNEY Patented Septo 11, 1934' human s'm'ras GAWNT moan Ruth Freedman, new York, N. r. Application December 5, 1931. Serial No. 579.147
' 2 Claims. (01. 223-62) This invention relates to a garment hanger and is a division of my patent application for Wardrobe bag, filed May 13, 1930, serial Number 452,010. v I
5 The object of the invention is the production of a garment hanger which can be detachably locked with and suspended from a pole or other support.
The second object of the invention is the production of a hanger upon which various garments can be easily simultaneously suspended without interfering with one another.
The third object of the invention is the production of a garment hanger which can be easily connected or detached from a pole with the use of only one hand of the user.
In the accompanying drawing, Fig. i represents a front view with fragmentary portions in longitudinal section of an exemplification of the garment hanger; Fig. 2 shows a top view. of Fig. 1 and Fig 3 indicates an enlarged section of Fig. 1 on the line 3, 3 and a fragmentary top view of a portion of said Fig. l.
The hanger in this instance is indicated with the yoke 20, which may be of wood or metal, and which is suspended from the suspending hook designated in its entirety by the numeral 25. The suspending hook comprises the vertical straight leg 26 which joins with curved crown portion 27, and the latter has formed at its end the eye 28. The lower portion 29 of the leg 26 is tightly engaged with the yoke 20. A sleeve 33 encircles and is fastened to the leg 26 with its lower end bearing on the top edge of the yoke20. The sleeve 33 is preferably fastned to the leg 26 by solder.
A locking spring 35 comprises the lower vertical leg 36, the loop 37, the curved body portion 38, the upper normally vertical leg 39 and the eye 40, at the upper end of the leg 39. l The leg 39 with its eye 40 normally extends. above the eye 28 of the hook 25.
The leg 36 is located between the leg 26 of the suspending hook 25 and the sleeve 33 and may be fastened in place by solder. The upper leg 39 of the locking spring 35 is normally positioned to close the open portion of the hook 25, the said leg 39 is positioned to normally bear on the eye 28 and is spaced from the outer contour thereof.
The yoke supports a pair of similar oppositely positioned supplemental hooks 45 and 46. Each of the hooks 45 and46, comprises the lower straight leg 50, which joins with the upwardly and inwardly inclined portion 51. The upper horizontal supporting member 52, extends from the inclined portion 51 and Joins with the S shaped member consisting of the inwardly inclined middle portion 53, the upper curved portion 53a and the lower curved portion 53b. From 6Q. the portion 53b extends the lower outwardly extendlng horizontal supporting member 54, having the curved portion 54a at the outer end and from the latter extends the inwardly inclined outer arm 55 having the eye 56 at its upper end. as The arm 55 is oppositely inclined to the middle portion 53 of the a shaped member. Said arm 55and the middle portion 53 approach each other asthey extend from their lower to their upper ends. The said portion 53 and the arm 55 respectively form with the lower supporting member 54 the locking pockets 58 and 59. The lower leg 50 of each of the hooks 45 and 46 is tightly seated in the yoke 20.
The suspended hook 25 in this instance is 7:; suspended from the pole 60 indicated in a ,dotted line.
To suspend the hook 25 on the pole 60, the user grasps the yoke 20 and bears the eye 40 against said pole. By this means the opening of 30 the hook 25 is opened to receive the said pole 60. To detach or remove the hook 25 from the pole 60, the user grasps the yoke 20 and laterally pulls the same which will open the spring 35 and release the said hook 25from the said pole.
The eyes 28 and 40 are made round or curved to prevent injury to the pole 60, when the hook is attached or detached from the pole.
The yoke 20 can be used for supporting low neck dresses. The distance between the legs 50 so of the inclined portions 51, is about 8 inches to maintain the dresses in proper position on the yoke 20. The inclined portions 51 approximately conform to the jointure between the neck and shoulders of the user.
The said portions 51 will engage the collar of a coat if the latter is suspended from the yoke 20. The inclined portions 51 are spaced to engagelow neck dresses and prevent them slipping and falling oif the hanger. Slips may be simulmo taneously suspended from the horizontal supporting members 54 and the pockets 58 and 59 tend to keep said slips from riding upwardly and becoming disengaged from the hanger. m It will be noted that the supplemental hooks 45 and 46 and the yoke 20, can be used simultaneously to suspend garments or can be used alternatively. Various modifications maybe made in the invention and the present exemplification 1m is m be taken as illustrative and not limitativo thereof.
Having described my invention what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim is:
1. In a garment hanger the combination of a yoke, a hook suspending said yoke, said hook comprising a leg, a crown portion extending from said leg forming an opening for the hook, an eye at the open end of the crown and integral therewith, a locking spring for the hook, said spring comprising a lower leg, said leg or the spring and the leg 0! the hook fastened to each other, a body portion extending from the leg or the spring, an upper normally vertical leg extending from the body portion or the spring and normally extending above the eye of the hook and an eye extending from and integral with the upper leg or the spring, the latter eye normally above the eye of the hook.
2. In a garment hanger the combination of a yoke, a hook suspending said yoke, a pair of supplemental hooks supported on the yoke, each supplemental hook comprising a lower leg extending from said yoke, an inwardly inclined portion extending from said leg, an upper horizontal supporting member extending from the upper end or said inwardly inclined portion, an 8 shaped member comprising an inwardly inclined middle portion, a curved portion at the upper end or said middle portion Joining with said upper horizontal supporting member, a curved portion at the lower end of said middle portion, a lower outwardly extending horizontal supporting member extending from the latter curved portion, a curved portion extending from the outer end of the said lower outwardly extending horizontal supporting member, an inwardly inclined outer arm extending from the latter curved portion and an eye at the upper end or said arm, the curved portions adjacent to the lower horizontal supporting member forming locking pockets therewith, said middle inwardly extending portion of the s shaped member and said inclined arm approaching each other as they extend from their lower to their upper ends, the said yoke and supplemental hooks adapted to suspend garments simultaneously or alternately. RUTH FREEDMAN.
