PATENT OFFICE.
ORMOND C. MALCOLM, 0F AUBURN, NEW YORK.
BRUSH-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 18, 1921.
Application filed August 6, 1920. Serial No. 401,641.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ORMOND C. MALCOLM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Auburn, in the county of (Jayuga andState of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 9. Brush- Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to brush holders and more particularly to paint brush holders for protecting such brushes when not in use.
The object of the invention is to provide a holder of this character which will completely incase the bristles of the brush and yet permit a preserving liquid to contact with the bristles.
Another object is to provide a brush holder having means for supporting it out of contact with the bottom of a bucket or other support and which may be suspended from the edge of the bucket top if desired.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists. in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a brush holder constructed in accordance with this invention and shown in closed position;
Fig. 2 is an edge View thereof.
Fig. 3 is a. similar view taken from the opposite edge.
Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the holder shown in open position with a brush mounted therein, and,
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section thereof, taken on the line 5--5 of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment illustrated the brush holder constituting this invention is shown in the form of aprotective casing 1 composed of two sections 2 and 3 preferably of uniform size and shape and hingedly connected at one edge by hinges 4, the free edges thereof being secured when the sections are closed by latches or clips 5.
These sections 2 and 3 as shown taper toward theirupper ends to adapt them for use in connection with a paint brush shown at B but obviously they may be used in connection with other brushes and when so used are shaped to conform to the shape thereof.
The sections 2 and 3 have inturned flanges 6 at their lower ends which meet when the sections are closed and protect the edge of the brush preventing said edge from becommg bent or injured. These sections 2 and 3 have inwardly offset bristle engaging members 7 at their lower ends which are here shown instruck with shoulders 7 which engage the lnner ends of the bristles adjacent the head of the brush see Big. 5) to prevent the (welght of the brush resting on the bristles. These instruck' ortions are equlppe'd with apertures 8, similar apertures being formed in the sections adjacent these portlons 7 to permit the preserving fluid to enter the casing and keep the bristles of the brush soft.
The bristle engaging elements 7, as is shown clearly in Fig. 5, clamp the bristles between them to prevent undue spreading thereof.
The casing or holder 1 is provided at its lower end with longitudinally extending fingers 9 spaced laterally from each other and designed to form feet for supporting the casing out of contact with the bottom. of the paint pot or other supnor IL hook 10 is carried by the upper end of one of the sections and is designed to be engaged with the ed e of a bucket or paint pot when it is desired to suspend a holder therefrom. Obviously this hook may be engaged with any other suitable support.
In the use of this holder the brush B after having been cleaned is placed therein in the position shown in Fig. 4 and the sections are then closed and secured together by the fasteners 5. The holder will then be hung by the hook 10 on a suitable snmoort or it may be placed in a container having a preserving liquid therein such as oil which enters the casing 1 through the apertures 8 and retains the bristles of the brush in soft flexible condition.
The preferred embodiment of thevinvention is dis" losed in the drawings and set forth in the" specificatiom-but it will be understood that any modifications within the scope of the claim may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages. V
What I claim is: I
A brush holder comprising sections hingedly connected along one side edge and having means for detachably connecting their free edges, said seetlons having 1nstruck portions arranged to clampingly engage the entire outer faces of the bristles of 5 the brush to be housed in the casing and retain them in proper Shane, said portlons having shoulders to engage the brush at the junction of the bristles with the head to hold the brush against longitudinal movement in one direction and prevent the weight 10 of the brush from resting on the bristles.
In testimony whereof, affix my signature hereto.
ORMOND o. MALCOLM.
