COMPARTMENT-GASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 16, 1909.
Application filed July 30, 1908, Serial No. 446,086.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MINNIE H. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Waterloo, Blackhawk county, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compartment Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in compartment-cases, and the object of my improvement is to provide a convenient receptacle containing in one compartment suitable means for supporting articles of personal apparel, such means being adapted to be swung out of the way when not in use, and in another compartment adjustable means for holding removably other articles of attire such as hats or other goods. This object I have accomplished by the means which are hereinafter fully described and claimed, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view, with a portion broken away, disclosing the interior arrangement and construction of my improvement in compartment-cases Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section through such case and which discloses the adjustable supporting means for the hat-compartment shelves. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective of one of the removable supporting pegs used in said hatcompartment.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The numeral 12 designates a box or case which is divided into two unequal compartments by means of a vertical transverse par tition 6. The case has a cover 1 hinged to it by hinges 2. The larger compartment contains a bail 3 whose trunnions 11 are inserted into and adapted to rock in sockets. 16 in the partition 6 and the opposite end of said compartment. The trunnions 11 are seated at approximately central points of said end and partition so that when the bail is swung over against the side of the compartment it may assume the position indicated by the dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2, in which position said bail lies closely in contact with one side and the ends of the compartment, and permits the use thereof without obstruction. The
numeral 9 designates a spring-clip secured to the inside surface of the end 10 of saidcompartment by rivets or other securing means, and whose free end 8 is so formed as to be but a little spaced away from such surface and having a crimp to receive the adjacent upright portion of said bail when the latter is rocked upward and pushed betweensuch surface and said clip. In this position, as shown by the full lines in Fig. 1, the cli securely holds the bail in its central vertical position. In this position a hanger or hangers 7 for garments may be hung over said bail by their hook or hooks. It is my design primarily to use said bail from which to suspend shirt-waists or other articles of apparel, so as to keep them from becoming soiled or creased.
The bail extends into the hollow of the cover, and nearly to the lower surface of its top. This extension makes it easier to remove articles suspended from said bail, and utilizes practically all the space of the interior of the case. The bail 3 maybe easily detached from the said clip 8 by using a little force. The smaller right-hand compartment is designed primarily to receive two or more hats. In each of opposite sides of said compartment are placed vertical parallel rows of socket-holes 4 spaced apart. The numeral 15 designates one of a plurality of bracketedpegs used to support a removable shelf 13 in said compartment, by having their peg portions 17 removably seated in such holes 4 as liewithin the same horizontal plane. By shifting the pegs upward or downward, the position of said shelf may be adjusted, or other pegs and one or. more similar shelves may be used in said com artment without departing from the rincip le involved in my invention. The shef 13 is provided with a finger-hole 5 by which it may be grasped and removed. The combination of said compartments and their supporting means inclosed, aiiords a convenient receptacle for articles of apparel, and may be kept in some location of ready access for daily use.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In combination, a case, a closure therefor,
bearing-seats in said case, a bail in said case Signed at Waterloo, Iowa, this 14th day of seated in said bearing-seats to rock therein July, 1908.
from a position across it and spaced apart from its sides to a position closely embracing MINNIE THOMAS 5 the inner perilphery thereof, and a spring clip Witnesses:
for detachab y receiving and securing said OQD. YOUNG,
bail in its said spaced apart position. I G. G. KENNEDY.
