RETAINER FOR MOTEIION-PIGTURE-FILM REELS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented ()ct. 1t, 1921.
Application filed January 11, 1921. ,Serial No. 436560 To all whom it may concern.
' Be it known that I, ELIJAH M. CHAsn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cheyenne, in the county of Laramie and State of Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Retainers hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relatesto new and useful improvements in reels for motion picture films and more particularly to a device for retaining the film in position after having been wound upon the reel. The main object of the present invention isthe provision of a device adapted to engage the film upon the exterior and to retain the same in position after having been wound upon the reel, said device including a band adapted to be wrapped around the film after it is wound ,upon the reel, the ends of the band being securely connected together at any point upon the reel.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a band of metal or other suitable material adapted to be wrapped around the film after havin been wound upon a reel, one end of said and carrying a keeper and the other end of the bandbeing movably disposed within the keeper and a catch carried by the keeper for engaging'the end of the band after being inserted in the keeper to retain the band in a tight position around 1 the film after the same has been wound upon the reel.
A still further object of the present inven-' tion is the provision of a retaining band for moving picture reels adapted to be applied from.
to the film after having been wound upon the reel, said device being quickly and readily secured in position or removed there- With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrange- Fig. 2 is an edge elevation showing my improved retainer in position.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the keeper member; H
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same. the band being shown in cross section;
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view through the keeper.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates an ordinary'reel upon which a moving picture film is wound and itis to be understood that my improved retaining device can be used in connection with various styles of reels. the retaining means being applied to the roll of film after it has been wound upon the reel 1, said retaining means being disposed between the two side flanges 2 of the reel.
"My improved retaining means includes a band 3 which can be made of metal or any other desirable material attached at one end by means of rivets or the like to the horizontal portions of the angular plates 4. These plates 4 are integrally formed at each end of a transverse plate 5, the ends of which are bent downwardly and provide the vertical. portions of the plates 4, this construction forming a guide for the opposite end of the band 3. It will be noted that the plates 4 and 5 can be readily stamped from a single piece of material and then bentto form the keeper or guide as illustrated, in'
Fig. 4, thus forming a substantial catch, the I position. When it is desired to release the band the upturned end 12 of the spring plate 6 is engaged by the thumb or finger to disengage the member 8 fro one of the openings 10 to release the end 1 of the band. After this end of the band has been released, the entire band can be readily withdrawn from between the side flanges of the reel and the film which is wound between these flanges. It will be noted that the plates 4 not only form suitable means for securing one end of the band in position, but form a guide for the loose end of the band after the same has been applied to the outside of the film which has been wound on the reel 1. It will also be understood that while I have shown and described the keeper member 8 as stamped from the spring member 6, this construction can be readily varied so that the member can be attached to the under side of the plate in any suitable manner and need not be formed integral with the plate.
From the above it will be readily apparent that I have provided a simple and durable device adapted to be applied to a moving picture film after having been wound upon a reel to retain the film in position and also assist in protecting the same against-fire or damage in other ways and also a device which can be quickly and readily applied or removed.
I claim as my invention:
l. A device of the character-described including a guide member, a band having one end secured to the guide member and its other end adapted to be removably disposed within the guide member and a spring actuated catch carried by the guide member and 2. A device of the class described including aguide member, a band having one and secured thereto, the other end of said band being prov1ded with openings and removably arranged within the guide, and a spring actuated catch carried by the guide and adapted to engage the openings in the band to retain the same in position within the guide member.
3. A device of the class described including a guide member having a transverse plate, a band having one end connected to the guide member, the other end or said band being provided with openings and removably arranged within the guide member beneath the transverse plate, and'a spring actuated catch carried by the plate and adapted to engage the openings in the band for retaining the same in position within the guide.
4. A device of the class described including a guide member, a transverse plate on the guide member having an opening therein, a band having one end secured to the guide member, the other end of said band eing provided with openings and removably arranged within the guide member, a
spring actuated catch carried by the trans-.
verse plate and movable through the opening the-rein whereby to engage within the openings in the band to retain the same in position within the guide.
a In testimony whereof I aflix my-signature ELIJAH M. CHASE.
