Be it known thatI, JOHN D. PEDERSEN, a citizen of the United States, Jackson, in the county of Lincoln and State have invented certain new and useful Improvements in .F irearms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more especially to that class of firearms usually designated as small arms, and a principal object of the invention is to furnish an improved gripsafety device particularly applicable to auto-loading and automatic pistols.
@ne class of small-arms to which my present improvements are applicable, includes the auto-loading pistols having a grip-stock, or handle portion of the frame or receiver of the fire-arm, which is adapted to receive a safety device operable by handlgrip or compression.
An' improved auto-loading pistol of this kind is described in my Patent No.1,348,733, dated August 3, 1920, and granted on m copending application (renewal) Serial No. 311,689, iiled July 17, 1919, and the improvements herein described and claimed are also illustrated in my said patent but are not claimed therein. Therefore, for convenience of illustration, I have herein shown my present improvements as yarranged and applied to the particular kind of auto-loading pistol which is shown in thedrawings of said patent, to which reference may be had.
The features of. my present grip-safety device are that it is a grip or handle contained safety device, arranged to prevent firing of the firearms by locking the firingvmember or hammer and the trigger-scar when my device is in normal or safety posi- Also, where the firearm is provided with a sliding breech-action comprising a firing-pin, to prevent discharge of the firearm by locking the breech-action to prevent contact between the firing-pin and the cartridge, so that action of thev firing-member or hammer on the firing-pin will not eX- plode the cartridge, this feature being accomplished by a movable member or controller which in the present embodiment of my invention is not provided with a means for guiding in its movement other than a pivotally operating arm.
Another feature is that means is provided foi` coaction of the movable member or conresiding in mally in partly pistol provided with my Fig. l, partly vbroken away to show the parts of my grip-safety device.

y grip safety device comprises a frame and a grip-safety member pivoted together by a transverse journal pin, the frame carrying a spring, which is a hammer-actuating or main firing-spring reacting upon a pin-locking slidable member, whereby the said two members are held assembled and said spring is held under compression, so that by sliding movement of said pin-lock the above-mentioned transverse journal-pin can be released and withdrawn, thereby yreleasing both said spring and the grip-safety member. c
The grip-safety member, designated by G is hand compressible or yieldable and is shown pivoted to the frame or receiver B near the lower end of the handle-portion or grip-stock thereof, Fig. 1, by means of a pivot pin .(/L The member G" closes the slot or space 2S formed in the frame of the pistol to receive the grip-safety device denoted generally by G, and which slot or space is of use in assembling the various parts of my device.
The grip-safety member G', is shown bored out at 7a from below to receive the spring 8e, Fig. 1. The spring plunger 8c and the spring plug or abutment 7b are shown operatively connecting with the spring 8e. The spring plug 7b, the upper end of which receives the lower end of the spring 8, has an annular groove .70. The loose fitting pin g which pivots the grip-safety mem vplunger ber to the frame or receiver B may also have an annular groove, so that when the spring 8e is compressed by moving the spring plug 7b upwardly the grip-safety pin g may be inserted to connect pivotally the gripsafety-member G to the grip-stock of the frame or receiver B On releasing the spring plug 7b, the spring 8e will move it downward until the top side of the annular groove in the plug bears against the top of the pivot g in said groove thereof and'thus holds said pin against being moved endwise.
To remove the grip-safety pin g, it is only necessary to push the Vspring plug 7b upward, to release this looking engagement. The cupped top 8m of the spring plunger 8* receives the lower end of the spring rod 8b, the upper end of which is pivotally secured to the firing member or hammer H, the effect of the spring being to throw or press the hammer H forwardly at all times. When the hammer is in its cocked position a line drawn through the pivot 8, which secures the spring rod 8b, to the hammer H, and through the grip-safety pin g, will pass in front of the center of the cupped or balland-socket engagement between the spring 8c and the spring rod 8b. Hence the action of the spring 8e tends to hold the grip-safety member G in its rear-most position when the hammer is cocked, and also holds one end, G2, in contact or engagement with the adjacent ortion of the frame of the firearm. All o which is more particularly described in my said patent.
The top portion of the grip-safety member G is kslotted out at 7d, Fig. 2, to furnish lclearance for Athe hammer H and the sear S, leaving a pair of side walls 7d which vare extended to provide a pair of locking prongs 7f. These prongs or lever arms 7 Yare located outside of, and clear of, the rear end of the trigger F, of the fire-arm, and when the grip-safety member is in its rearward or safety position, these lever arms are immediately below the bottom-sides ofthe shoulder 14p on the rockable member or controller N, which is thereby locked againstv downward movement, the purpose of the rockable controller N, being to prevent or allow movement of the sliding breech-action of the fire-arm, the controller N being rockable upwardly and downwardly to accomplish this purpose.
The rockable member or controller N is `provided with a spring operated actuating means or actuator 14m, which engages a lever member n, pivotally attached to the rockable member or controller, and which engages a lever-face 17C of the sear S.

rocked or moved in one direction, that is, upwardly, by movement of the hammer H from fired position to firing or cocked position, through engagement of the hammer with the sear S, and engagement of the y lever-face 17C, of the sear S, with the lever member a, which in turn engages the aetuator 14m. The rockable member or controller N, is rocked in a reverse direction, that is, downwardly, by movement of the hammer H from firing or cocked position to fired position, through movement of the Sear S, by the hammer, the arms 17f, of the sear S engaging or bearing down upon the upper surfaces of the shoulder 14p, of the controller N, and moving it downward.
The rockable member or controller N, is provided with an arm, or preferably with forked arms 15, passing on each side of the hammer, and pivoted together by a pin or journal 16, which engages a recess, 17, shown in outline Fig. 2, in the hammer H, to allow the firing means or hammer H to assume a cocked or firing position without interference with the rockable member or controller. The pin 16, is secured at its ends to the receiver or frame B, of the firearm and the rockable member or controller N, is thus supported and a guilde-way for it in-its rocking motion is obviated,
A link 1S, pivotally connects the rockable member or controller N, vto the tri ger member F, which is movable forward y to normal firing position by means not shown, but described and set forth in my said patent, and by pull thereon movable rearwardly to discharge the fire-arm. The purpose of said link is to control the movement of the trigger member F so that a second pull on the trigger member will not discharge th@J firearm unless the trigger member is first permitted to move forward to its'normal or forward position after a first pull thereon. Thus Fig.l 2, the triggerV member is shown y in normal or forward position, although the fire-arm is locked against discharge, the lower portion or end-face 6 of the trigger member adjacent to the` means or recess 6' for receiving the sear S, being in engagement with the ends 17d of the sear S. Compression of 'the grip-safety member G ,will release the rockable member N for movement downwardly to release the breech action, where the fire-arm is provided with a breech action, and to release the sear member and hammer. Pull upon the Vtrigger member F will move the sear member S to release the firing member or hammer H for movement to fired position. The rockable member or controller N, by means of the link 18, whenl moved downwardly will move the trigger` member F downwardly so that the end of the trigger memberF will be in the position shown in Fig. 1, the ends 17d of the sear S, then being receivable in the recess or receiving means 6m of the trigger member and thus a second pull yon the trigger F, without permitting the trigger to move forward to its normal position will act on the sea-r S, but will not effect discharge of the firearm. In this feature of my invention, however, I do not restrict myself to thev use of a rockable member or controller.
It will be noted that if the notch 8J' on the hammer H should give away or be accidentally chipped or broken and rendered ineffective, the hammer in flying forward would be arrested during this movement and before it struck the firing pin of the firearm, since the sear S, would not be allowed to yield and revolve away from the hammer H because of the. engagement of the controller N with the sear S and the camming effect of the eccentric cam surfaces 8k of the hammer engaging the adjacent surfaces of the sear S.
To release the hammer H to fire the arm the grip-safety member G must be moved to its compressed or forward position prior to the pulling of the trigger member F to discharge the fire-arm. Such hand-grip pressure brings the locking arms 7 f on the grip-safety member forward from under the bottom-sides 14e on the rockable member or controllerV N to the recess 14T, and thus allows the scar S to be revolved to release the hammer H. When the hammer is so released the controller N will be moved downward by the operation of the hammer H and the sear member S, the grip-safety member G being in its forward or compressed position. The rockable member or controller N is movable to upward or ,locking position by the actuator 14m when the firing member or hammer is moved to cocked or firing position, the grip-safety member G then being in rearward or non-compressed position. The grip-safety membel1 G therefore., is an indicator of the hammer position, in that the grip-safety member is always in its forward or unlocking position, when the hammer H is forward, or-in fired position, and is in its rearward or locking position, when the hammer is cockedor in firing position, provided in the latter case, the grip-safety member is allowed by the user of the rearm to assume this rearward or locking position.
Thedescribed arrangement of the rockable member or controller N and the gripoperable safety member G also affords means for holding the sliding breechaction of the firearm in forward position, when the firearm is provided with a sliding breechaction. To do this the controller N is movable upwardly so that the upper end or top 14a, thereof projects into the path of the slidable breechaction of the fire-arm and interferes with the rearward sliding movement thereof. If the grip-safety member G is released it will then lock the rockable member or controller N in such upward or interfering position so that the slidable firing position and breechaction of the firearm will be held in its forward position. To allow the slidable breechaction of the fire-arm to go to rearward position it is only necessary to compress the grip-safety member G-without however requiring the trigger member F to be pulledto permit movement of the rockable member or controller N downwardly out of such interfering position, and thereby permit the slidable breechaction of the iirearm to move to its rearward position.
` The slidable hammer spring or firing spring plug 7b, when my grip-safety device is assembled in the rearm, projects below the bottom line of the butt of the fiream, in this case a pistol, at or near the rear edge of the butt, so that by taking the fire-arm in hand and bearing it down upon a table or other plane surface, the plug 7b may be slid or moved inwardly vin the ybutt far enough to permitthe removal of the pivot g, which is freely-fitted in the frame or receiver B, thus enabling the mechanism to be disassembled without the use of tools, other than a suitably stout pin or slender nail to push out the various journal pins ofthe firing-train mechanism of the firearm.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: l. In a firearm, in combination, a frame of said rearm, a firing member movable to to fired position, sear means engageable with said firing member, rockable means, means for'moving said rockable means in direction to lock said sear means and firing member in firing position', means for moving said rockable means in direction reverse to the first mentioned direetion when said firing member is moved to fired position, grip-compressible means` engageable with said frame and with said roclrable means when in position of safety, to block said rockable means in said locking position, and releasable from both said engagements Aby grip-compression, means foi` movingsaid firing member to fired position,

2. In a firearm, in combination, a frame of said firearm, a sliding breechaction, a firing member movable to firing position and to fired position, sear means engageable with said firing member, rockable means engageable with said Sear means, means for moving said rockable means in direction to lock said CID ' and releasable from sliding breechaction and lock said sear means and firing member in firing position, means for moving said rockable means in direction reverse to the first-mentioned direction when said firing member is moved to fired position, grip-compressible means engageable with said frame and engageable with said roclrable means when in position of safety, to block said rockable means in said locking position, and releasable from both said engagements by grip-compression, means for moving said firing member to fired position, trigger means normally in forward position and by pull thereon-movable rearwardly, when said grip-compressible means is gripcompressed, to move said sear means for releasing said firing member for movement to fired position, and means for preventing, after a first pull on said trigger means, movement of said sear means by a second )ull on said trigger means before movement of said trigger means to said normal forward position.
3. In a firearm, in combination, a frame of said firearm, a firing member movable to firing position, and to fired position, sear means engageable with said firing member, rockable means, means for moving said rockable means in direction to lock said lsear means and ring member in firing position,

4. In a firearm, in combination, a frame of said firearm, a sliding breechaction, a tir-y ing member movable to firing position vand to fired position, a rockable member engageable with said sliding member engageable with said firing member and engageable with said roclable member, means for moving said rockable member in direction to lock said slidingvbreechaction, and lock said sear member and firing member in firing position, said rockable member being movable in direction reverse to the first-mentioned direction by said sear inembreechaction, a searY ber when said firing member is moved to fired position, a grip-operable member engageable with said frame and with Said rockable member when in position of safety, to block said roclable member in said locking position, and releasable from both said engagements by grip-compression, spring means for moving said firing member to red position, and affording grip-compression of the grip-operable member, and for returning the grip-operable member to engagement with said frame after grip-compression, a trigger member normally in forward position and by pull thereon movable rearwardly, when said grip-operable member is grip-compressed, to move said sear member for releasing said firing member for movementto fired position, and means comprising a link pivotally connected to said rockable member and pivotally connected to said trigger member for preventing, after a iirst pull on said trigger member, movement or" said sear member by a second pull on said trigger member before movement of said trigger member to said normal forward position. l
9. 1n a firearm, in combination, a frame of said firearm comprising a grip-stock, a firing member movable to ring position and to fired position, and provided with a cock-notch and a cam face, a controller having an `,arm pivotally supported by said frame, said controller being provided with anactuator, a'lever member carried by said controller provided with a face engaging said actuator and provided with an extending end, a sear member engageable with said controller provided with a locking shoulder for engaging said cocknotch and a face for engaging said cam face of the firing member, and provided with a lever-face engaging said extending end of the lever member, and provided with projecting lower ends, said controller being movable upwardly by said actuator to lock said sear member and firing member in firing position, and being movable downwardly by said sear member when said firing member is moved to fired position, a grip-operable member pivotally attached to said gripstock and engageable with said frame and engageable with said controller to block the controller in said locking position, and releasable from both said engagements by gripcompression, spring means for moving said firing member to tired position, and affording grip-compression of the grip-operable member, and for returning the grip-operable member to engagement with said frame after grip-compression, a trigger member normally in forward position provided 'with a rear end havinga projection and an adjacent recess, said trigger member being movablerearwardly by pull thereon to move said sear member when 4said grip-operable member is grip-compressed, and a link pivotally attached to said controller and pivotally attached to said trigger member for moving the trigger member to position for engaging said projecting lower ends thereof with said projecting lower ends of the sear member when said controller is in upward position,
and for moving the trigger member to position for receiving in said recess said projecting lower ends of the sear member when said controller is in downward position.

In a firearm, in combination, a frame of said firearm comprising a grip-stock, a sliding breechaction, a firing member movable to firing position and to fired position, and provided with a cock-notch and a cam face, a controller provided with an arm pivotally supported by said frame, said controller being provided with an actuator, a lever member carried by said controller, provided with a face engaging said actuator, and provided with an extending end, a sear member engagcable with said controller' provided with a locking-shoulder for engaging said cock-notch and a face for engaging said cam face of the firing member, and provided with a lever face engaging said extending end of the lever member, and provided with projecting lower ends, said controller being movable upwardly by said actuator to lock said sliding breechaction, and lock said sear member and firing member in firing position, and being movable downwardly by said sear member when said firing member is moved to fired position, a grip-operable member pivotally attached to said grip-stock and engageable with said frame and engageable with said controller to block the controller in said locking position, and releasable from both said engagements by grip-compression, spring means for moving said firing member to fired position, and affording gripcompression of the grip-operable member, and for returning the grip-operable member to engagement with said frame after gripcompression, a trigger member normally in forwardposition provided with a rear end having a projection and an adjacent recess, said trigger member being movable rearwardly by pull thereon to move said sear member when said grip-operable member is grip-compressed, and a link pivotally attached to said vtrigger member for moving the trigger member to position for engaging said projecting'end thereof`V with said projecting lower ends of the sear member when said controller is in upward position and for moving the trigger member to position for receiving in said recess said projecting lower ends of the sear member when said controller is in downward position.
V11. In a firearm, inl combination, a frame of said firearm comprising a grip-stock, a firing hammer movable to firing position and to fired position,
and provided with a cocknotch and an eccentric cam-face,a controller having an arm pivotally supported by said frame, said controller being provided with an actuator, and provided with a shoulder having upper surfaces and having bottomsides, a lever member pivotally attached to said controller, provided with a face engaging said actuator and provided with an extending end, a sear member provided with a locking shoulder for engaging said cocknotch and a face for engaging said eccentric cam-face ofthe firing hammer, and provided with an arm having ends fory engaging said upper surfaces of the shoulder of the controller, and provided with a leverface engaging said extending end of thev lever-member, and provided with projecting lower ends, said controller being movable upwardly by said actuator to lock said sear member and firing hammer in firing position, and being movable downwardly by engagement of said ends of the arm of the sear member with said upper surfaces of the shoulder of the controller when said firing member is moved to fired position, a gr1p.

and provided with an actuator, and provided with a shoulder having upper surfaces and having bottom sides, a lever member pivotally attached to said controller'provided with a face engaging said actuator and provided with an extending end, a sear member provided with a locking shoulder for engaging said cock-notch and a face for engaging said eccentric cam-face of the firing hammer, and provided with an arm having ends for engaging said upper surfaces of the shoulder of the controller, and provided with projecting lower ends, said controller being movable upwardly by said actuator to lock said sliding breechaction, and lock said sear member and firing hammer in firing position, and being movable downwardly-by engagement of said ends of the arm of the sear member` with said upper surfaces of the shoulder of the controller when said firing hammer is moved to fired position, a gripsafety member pivotally attached at one end thereof to said grip-stock and engageable at the other end thereof with said frame, provided with locking prongs for engaging said bottom-sides of the controller to block the controller in said locking position, and releasable from both said engagements by grip-compression, spring means for moving said firing hammer to fired position, and affording grip-compression of the grip-safety member and for returning the grip-safety member to engagement with said frame after grip-compression, a trigger member normally in forward position, provided with a rear end having a projection and an adjacent recess, said trigger member being movable rearwardly by pull thereon to move saidsearmember when said grip-safety member is grip-compressed, and a link pivotally attached to said controller and pivotally attached to said trigger member for moving the trigger member to position for engaging said projecting end thereof with said projecting lower ends of the sear member when said controller is in upward position, and for moving the trigger member to position for receiving in said recess said projecting lower ends of the sear member when said.

In a firearm, in combination, a firing member movable to firing position and to fired position, Sear means engageable with said firing member, locking said sear means and firing member when said firing member is-moved to firing position, said controller being rockably movable to unlocking position when said firing member is moved to fired position, trigger means normally in forward position and by pull thereon movable rearwardly to move said sear means for releasing said firing member for movement to fired position, and means for preventing, after a first pull on a rockable controller for said trigger means, movement of said sear means by a second pull on said trigger means before movement of said trigger means to normal forward position.
14. 1n afirearm, in combinatiton, a sliding breechaction, a firing member movable to firing position and to fired position, sear means engageable with said firing member, a rockable controller for locking said sliding breechaction, and locking said sear means and firing member when said firing member is moved to firing position, said controller being rockably movable to unlocking position when said firing member is moved to fired position, trigger means normally in forward position and by pull thereon movable rearwardly to move said sear means for releasing said firing member for movement to fired position, and means for preventing, after a first pull on said trigger means, movement of said sear means by a second pull on said trigger means before movement of said trigger means to said normal forward position.

In a firearm, in combination, a firing memberA movable to firing position and to fired position, sear means engageable with said firing member, a rockable controller for locking said sear means and firing member when said firing member is moved to firing position, said controller being rockably movable to unlocking position when said firing member is moved to fired position, trigger means normally in forward position and by pull thereon movable rearwardly to move said sear means for releasing said firing member for movement to fired position, and means operatively connecting said rockable meansY and said trigger means for preventing, after a first pull on said trigger means, movement ofsaid sear means by a second pull on said trigger means before movement of said trigger means to said normal forward position.

In a firearm, in combination, a sliding breechaction, a firing member movable to tiring position and to fired position, sear means engageable with said firing member, a rockable controller for locking said sear means and firing member when said firing member is moved to firing position, said controller being rockably movable to unlocking position when said firing member is moved to fired position, trigger means normally in forward position and by pull thereon movable rearwardly to move said sear means for releasing sai-d firingmember for movement to fired position, and means operatively connecting said rockable means and said trigger means for preventing, after a first pull on said trigger means, movement of' said sear means by a second pull on said trigger means before movement of said trigger means to said normal forward position,

In a firearm, in combination, a firing member movable to firing position and to fired position, sear means engageable with said firing member, a controller providedwith a. pivoted arm for supporting the controller, said controller being movable to lock said sear means and firing member when the firing membery is moved to firing position, and movable to unlocking position when said firing member is moved to fired position, trigger means normally in forward position, and by pull thereon movable rearwardly to move said rear means for releasing said firing member for movement to firedV position, and link means operatively connecting said controller and said trigger means for preventing, after a irst pull 'on said trigger means', movement of said sear means by a second pull on said trigger means before movement of said trigger means to said normal forward position.
18, In a iirearm, in combination, a frame of said firearm, a sliding breechaction, a firing member movable to liring position and to fired position, sear means engageable with sai-d firing member, a controller provided with a pivoted arm for supporting the controller, said controller being movable to lock said sliding breechaction, and lock said sear means and firing member when the iring member is moved to iring position, and movable to unlocking position when said firing member is moved to tired position, trigger means normally in forward position, and by pull thereon movable rearwardly to move said sear means for releasing said liring member for movement to fired position, and link means operatively connecting said controller and said trigger means for preventing, after a iirst pull on said trigger means, movement of said sear means by a second pull on said trigger means before movement of said trigger means to said normal forward position.

In a firearm, in combination, a sliding breechaction, a iring member movable to firing position and to fired position, sear means engageable with said firing member, a controller provided with a pivotally supported arm, said controller being engageable with said sliding breechaction, and movable in a direction to lock said sliding breechaction, and lock said sear means and firing member in firing position, and movable in a reverse Vdirection when said firing member is moved to fired position, trigger means normally in forward position and by pull thereon movable rearwardly to move said searmeans for releasing said firing member for movement to fired position, and means comprising means operatively connecting said controller and said trigger means for preventing, after a first pull on said trigger means, movement of said sear means by a second pull on said trigger means before movement of said trigger means to said normal forward position.

In a firearm, in combination, a firing member movable to firing position and to fired position, a sear member engageable with said firing member and provided with projecting lower ends, a controller rockably movable upwardly to lock said sear member and firing member in firing position, and rockably movable downwardly to unlocking position by the sear member when said firing member is moved to fired position, a trigger member normally in Jforward position and provided with a rear end having a projection and an adjacent recess, said trig' ger member being movable rearwardly by pull thereon to move said sear member for releasing said firing member for movement to fired position, and a link operatively connecting said controller and said trigger member for moving the trigger member to position for engaging said projecting end thereof with said projecting lower ends of the sear member when said controller is in upward position, and for moving the trigger member .to position for receiving in said recess said projecting lower ends of the Sear member when said controller is in downward position.
21. In a firearm, in combination, a sliding breechaction, a firing member movable to firing position, and to fired position, a sear member engageable with said firing member and provided with projecting lower ends, a Y
controller engageable with said sliding breechaction, said controller being rockably movable upwardly to lock said sliding breechaction, and lock said sear member and iirmg member in firing position, and rockabl'y movable downwardly to unlocking position by the sear member when said firing member is moved to fired position, a trigger member normally in forward position and provided with a rear' end having 'a projection and an adjacent recess, said trigger member being movable rearwardly by pull thereon to move said sear member for releasingsaid firing member for movement to fired position, and a link operatively connecting said controller and said trigger member for moving the trigger member to position for engagingsaid projecting end thereof with said projecting lower ends of the sear member when said controller is in upward position, and for moving the trigger member to position for receiving in said recess said projecting lower ends of the sear member when said controller is in downward position.
