manann.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. NELSON, a citizenof the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Firearms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates toguns and 'parconstruction and reduce the cost of manufacture, facilitate assembling and disassemthe gun.
bling of theparts, increase theelement of safety. inthe handling of the gun, and post the user at all times as to the condition of W The invention will be found fully illus tratedin the accompanying drawings, wherein, a
Figure 1 is aleft side elevation, of the improved gun, partly in section; Fig. 2 is a rightqside elevation, the breech-bolt being looked back; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary right side elevation, illustrating particularly the means for looking back the breech-bolt; Fig. 4 is a plan of the frame,- with the breechbolt removed; Fig. 5 and Fig. 'Gdetail's illus-' trative of a modification of said means; Figs. ,7: to 10, inclusive, details illustrative of the grip-safety means; and, Fig. 11 a front fragmentary elevation of the grip.
Except as hereinafter indicated the fol-- lowing parts of the gun shown in said drawingsare or may be all substantially theisame parts of the gun set wit: the frame a havingthe depending gripforming portion a, the sliding breech-bolt 6 having the removable breechlug 0 containingthe firing pin (not shown the hammer d and the-sear e, the barrel f, the spring 9 for returning the breech-bolt after recoil, the sear trip (or trigger and sear connector) I, the trigger i, the magazine j and its spring-elevated platformk, and the magazine catch Z. p v
Specification of Letters Patent. 1 Patented Jan, 11 1916, Application filed June 22, 1914. Serial No. 346,457.
For preventing double-firing in the present case the sear trio it has a rigid toe h which, when a pull on the triggerbrings it against the vertical face of a fixed shoulder on the gun frame and this results in the discharge of the arm and is followed by the depression of the sear-trip under the wiping action of the rearwardly sliding breech-bolt,
snaps under the shoulder and locks downthe sear-trip out of the path of the (cooked) sear in the ensuing return of the breech-bolt under pressure of springg. This construc: tion simplifies the sear trip, insures much greater, reliabilitv of the action thereof and makes it better adapted to withstand wear and tear, it being noted that the elasticity of the flesh ofthe users finger afi'ordsthe necessary impetus to the sear trip to cause it to catch under the shoulder k' In the improved grip safety mechanism, a lever on at the back of, and shaped to conform with the contour of, portion a of the gun frame to form therewith the grip is fulcrumed on a transverse pin n in an openmg 0, its outward movement being limited by contact of a lug p at its upper end with the back wall of the portion a. Another lever, g, having a horizontal loop-shaped portion 7 embracing the magazine and a depending angular leg 9" formed with'the lrnee 7 is fulcrumed on the transverse pm 8. its forward end having a lug which (marked t) bears down on the surface a of the frame on which the trigger slides, abutting the trigger and so normally preventing its rearward movement. The lever m receives the contact of the kneeg' on its (hollow) inner side. The parts are normally held in the positions described by a spiral spring '0 coiled around a sleeve to onpin n and having one end engaged in the frame and the'other bearing against the forward side of leg g of lever q. The loop-shaped portion-of lever 19 contacts with the sides of the magazine cavity of the frame, so that sidewise movement of said. lever is prevented.
To similarly preserve the lever m against lost-motion I provide its upper end with the slotted jaws m which fit nicely between and in contact with the fulcrum portions g of the lever g, the slots ofsaid jawsv receivingthe pin 8. -When the gun is properly gripped in the act of'pulling the trigger theincidenvtion when the grip is relaxed.
tal forward pressure on lever m obviously elevates the lug t on lever g out of the path of rearward movement of the trigger, sprmg 'u returning the parts to their normal POSI- In the right side of the frame, under the breech-bolt, is an upwardlyopen elongated longitudinally extending housing or groove :0 which enters the magazine cavity at the rear and has an aperture a? leading to 1ts front end. A bar or lever 3 has a knee 3 on which it rests, in a manner adapting 1t to tilt, on the bottom of this groove or housing; the top of the bar 3 slopes toward each end from a point near the middle 'thereof, where it is adapted to have a fulcr um on the under side of the breech-bolt, whlch, when in place, confines the bar in said groove. The forward end of the bar kept normally uplifted by the spring 2, as a finger-piece 2, and its rear end, which overlies the magazine platform and is adapted to be elevated thereby as soon as the last cartridge is withdrawn from the magazine,
has a toe 3 adapted to enter a locking notch 4 in the under side of the breech bolt upon rearward movement incident to firing the last cartridge, thus locking the breech-bolt in an abnormal position and so signifying that the magazine is empty; to release the breech-bolt, having replaced the empty magazine with a filled one, the operator presses upwardly with his trigger finger against the finger piece 2, which protrudes through aperture :0. The front ends of the housing and bar are formed rearwardly inclined, as at'm" y", and the barhas a lateral pin 5 received in a forwardlyvinclined groove 6 in one side of the housing 00. With this construction, due to the convergence of the surface w and groove 6, the barcannot be removed except by holding down its forward end and elevating its rearward end, in which manner it may be removed readily. In the present instance, the forward thrust of the bar under pressure of the breech-bolt is assumed by the pin 5 engaging the forward side of the groove 6.
In Figs. 5 and 6 the construction is substantially the same excepting that the front end of the bar, contacts with the front end of the housing 00* on assuming the thrust of the breech-bolt and that a spring 7 carried by the bar and held compressed between the same at one side of the housing serves both to retain the bar in the position to which it is manually rocked (so long as the upward pressure of the magazine platform is absent) and to keep the bar from being dislodged when the gun is taken down. I
The pin 8 affording a fulcrum for the magazine catch Z is in the present arm loosely or revolubly mounted in the frame and has a driving fit in the magazine catch.
customarily, the pin has a driving fit in the 1 and including erted longitudinally of the what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v
1. The combination of the frame having a rigid overhanging shoulder, a recoiling breech bolt, a spring normally opposing recoil of the breech-bolt, a cockable firing mechanism arranged in the breech-bolt and.
